Abstract:Selenium(Se)is an essential trace element for animals.Selenium deficiency can cause a series of diseases,excessive selenium can lead to selenium poisoning,and adequate selenium supplementation has many beneficial effects.Se plays an important effect in cattle production.Dietary selenium supplementation can not only increase the selenium content of blood,milk and beef,but also improve the reproductive performance of cattle,enhance immunity,and improve beef quality.The impact and results of Se supplementation in cattle depend on physiological stage,Se status of animals,type and content of Se.At present,the physiological effects of Se supplementation on animals have been studied in depth.Se absorption and metabolism pathway in animals should be explored in further studies,which can contribute to explain the mechanism of Se effects on animal physiology.In the paper,the functions of Se and the effects of Se supplementation on cattle were systematically reviewed.
