Abstract: | The gas phase reaction between elemental mercury (Hg0) and ozone (03) has been studied in sunlight, in darkness, at different temperatures, and different surface-to-volume (s/v) ratios. At 03 concentrations above 20 ppm, a loss of Hg0 and a simultaneous formation of oxidized mercury (Hg(II)) was observed. The results suggest a partly heterogeneous reaction, with a gas phase rate constant of 3±2×10?20 cm3 molec.?1 s?1 at 20 °C. This corresponds to an atmospheric Hg half-life of about one year at a mean global 03 concentration of 30 ppb. |
