A NEW WALNUT VARIETY-'JIN LONG No.1'

'Jin Long No.l' (Code name. 7806) is a clone variety selected from a cultivated seedling walnut population ( Juglans regia ) , which was discovered at Nan Piancheng Village, Fenyang County, Shanxi Province in 1978. This variety,identified by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanxi Province, was the first exceedingly good late-cropping walnut variety in China. This new variety's outstanding characteristics are. comparatively early cropping, high yield and excellent quality of nut. Some grafted seedling will flower next year. The rate of fruit bearing of the 6-year -old grafted trees is 58.82%, and the maximum number of fruits in a single tree are 46. This variety also has a character of monogeny. The top-grafted trees can bear fruits in the third year after grafting, and in the sixth year, the fruit shoot percentage among all new shoots reaches 44.5%, and there are 1.7 fruits on a fruit shoot averagely .The kernel output per m~2 of the canopy's vertical shadow area is 0.2lkg, 3.89 times higher than the CK tree's.The nut is fairly big;the average nut weight is 14.85g, maximum, 16.7g; the average length of three -dimeter is 3.78cm. The nut is regular in shape , smooth in shell surface. The shell thickness is 1.09mm. It is easy to remove the whole kernel, kernel percent is 61.34/0. The average kernel weight is 9.1g, maximum, 10.7g. The kernel is light in color, satisfactory in flavor and superior in quality. The indexes of main economic characters of this new variety surpass those in the'high yield of walnut and quality of nuts' ( GB 7907-87 ) . The variety is cold-resistant, drought-tolerant and disease-resistant. It is suitable to be cultivated in the area which locates to the south of Taiyuan city, below an elevation of 1100m in Shanxi Province, or the other with the similar ecological conditions.
