Abstract:Populus tomentosa is considered as the best among the native poplar species in China. Therefore, a national program of selection and breeding of Populus tomentosa was established in 1983. Since then, much work has been done, including researches on: (1) collection and conservation of gene resources and the establishment of a clonal archive and arboretum, (2) provenance test and clonal selection for plywood and constructive timber, (3) back cross breeding for pulpwood, (4) multicross for resistance to cold and drought, (5) triploid breeding, and (6) the rapid system of vegetative propagation.
