Abstract:Changes in husbandry and production practices in dairying, together with the availability of potent antimicrobial agents, have resulted in significant changes in the nature of clinical mastitis. The prime aetiological agents in the disease are now Staph. aureus, Strep. uberis, and E. coli whilst Strep. agalactiae no longer represents a serious problem. The changing nature of mastitis indicates that earlier efficacy studies may have little real relevance at this time since only the newer antibiotics, such as the cephalosporins, have been evaluated in the treatment of the disease as it exists today (Harris et al., 1977; Crosse et al., 1984). This trail was undertaken in an attempt to redress this deficiency.
