The Sustainable Development of Forests in the Northern and Temperate Zones

Designated by the Chinese Ministry of Forestry and as a representative from ITTO,the author attended an Expert Symposium on Sustainable Development of Forests in the Northern and Temperate Zones held in Canada from Sep.27-Oct.1,1993.The high level Symposium convened by European Security Council(ESC) is an important meeting after United Nations Conference on Environment and Development(UNCED) held in 1992.The author summarizes the situation of the symposium and introduces the concept of sustainabilities,and the situation of discussion for index system used to verify sustainable forest mangement.The author thinks that the sustainable forest management has been the most popular subject of talks and the most foundmental requirement for the world forestry of today which should arouse numerous Chinese forestry workers to concern and pay attention to the issue of sustainable development.The author raises that for the benefit of contemporary people and descendants to reach the objectives of sustainable forest development is also an unshirkable and duty-bound responsibility of Chinese forestry workers.
