Application of Genetic Distance and Cluster Analysis to Parent Selection for Hybridization in Cut Chrysanthemum

Forty-one chrysanthemum(Chrysanthermum×morifolium Ramat.) cultivars were used to study parent selection of cross breeding by clustering analysis in terms of genetic distance.Eight quantitative characters closely related to the quality of cutting chrysanthemum were used as test indexes.All the genetic distances between the cultivars were estimated based on the principal components analysis,and 41 chrysanthemum cultivars were classified according to square sum of deviations.Forty-one chrysanthemum cultivars were clustered into four major groups by genetic distance of 15.Results of the cross experiment showed that hybrid progeny of the lower-parent individuals whose parents’ genetic distance was greater,had a lower proportion,and the traits of most individuals were between their parents’;hybrid progeny of the higher-parent individuals whose parents’ genetic distance was lower,occupied a certain proportion,but the higher-parent individuals had a higher proportion.
