Dealing with contaminated soils

Abstract. Although there is a need to protect soils against future pollution, many sites are already badly contaminated by past activity. The paper describes some of the contaminants which affect soils, and the policies for acceptable levels adopted by national governments. Various appropriate clean-up policies are discussed.
