| Abstract: | We examined the degradation and
evolution of holm oak(Quercus ilex L.)cop- pices in the west Mediterranean basin and
proposed an auto- allelopathic hypothesis.Comparative studies with the downy oak (Quercus
pubescens),assumed to be the climax vegetation of the re-gion, revealed that seed germination
and seedling biomass accumulation in holm oak were greatly inhibited by both water- extracts
and under- story soils in its own coppices. |
