Abstract:Piglet tail-biting syndrome is a common pica in piglets, which often occurs due to nutritional disorders and improper feeding and management. Between 12 and 14 weeks of age in piglets, this syndrome is common, and the incidence rate is higher in January-March and August-December each year. Comparatively, female piglets have a higher incidence rate than male piglets. From a clinical point of view, the characteristic symptom is that the piglet biting others is quick to move, in contrast, the bitten piglet screams and struggles, and the tail is broken and bloody. The tails of the slightly injured piglets are bitten off in half, and the tails of the heavily injured piglets are all bitten off. Bitten piglets have anemia problem due to blood loss and their growth and development are hindered. Even individual piglets die due to excessive blood loss. If the treatment is not done or treatment measures are not taken in time, the wound will become infected, causing local infl ammation, tissue abscesses, and necrosis, resulting in decreased meat quality and reduced production. In summary, the article analyzes the symptoms and causes of piglet tail-biting, and proposes countermeasures based on the causes, what''s more, it explains the hazards of piglet tail biting syndrome in the breeding process and how to scientifi cally and reasonably avoid the economic loss in modern breeding.
