Workshop Series of Tree Breeding Strategy in Sweden

The workshop series on tree breeding strategy of Sweden were held in Uppsala, Sweden, from October 1983 to February 1984. It was organized by the Department of Forest Genetics SLU and guided by Dr Hyun Kang, population geneticist of Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, U.S.A. Most important forest geneticists and tree breeders from different areas in Sweden attended the workshop,so did the scientists from other Universities and Nordic countries. Beginning with introduction of new concepts of tree breeding system and strategy, participants did a series of exercises combining their experience and knowledge in tree breeding with the new concepts. The organizers and participants exchanged opinions repetedly, reviewed and analysed the history of the practice on tree breeding in Sweden, and reached agreement on the whole in the following aspects. (1)The decision of long-term tree breeding strategy in Sweden was adopted; (2)The work was redivided and coordinated among the four existent organizations involved in tree breeding to constitute an overall frame in accordance with the strategy, and information exchange among the four organizations is to be enhanced; (3)Tree breeding populations with rational distribution and well-conceived design are to be used as the main form and conservation for tree species; (4)Six focuses were determined to develop in breeding techniques and multi-discipline cooperation approach was recommended to solve difficult technical problems; (5)The outlines of the plan to establish breeding populations for Norway Spruce and Scots Pine in long-term breeding for Sweden were proposed in accordance with the above strategy and system. The author recognized that the contents and organizing work of the workshop were worth referencing for China. Research in the tree breeding strategy for major tree species of China should be set about.
