A note on Xanthomonas blight of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.) savi) and prospects for its control by breeding for tolerance

Summary This short review attempts to collect information on Xanthomonas pathogens of beans that is of importance to attempts to breed for tolerance. Sources of immunity are not yet recognized, but tolerance has been reported in several genetic stocks. All inheritance of tolerance so far reported has been quantitative. Some different pathotypes are already recognized and indications are that more of these will be found as they are looked for. Different inoculation methods may be appropriate for detecting different sorts of host tolerance.
