Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of unconventional feed resource potato powder in finishing pigs and to investigate its effects on growth performance,carcass traits and meat quality of pigs.450 fattening pigs of uniform weight were randomly divided into 3 groups with 5 replicates in each group and 30 pigs in each replicate.The control group was fed a basic diet,and the two treatment groups were fed a diet with 10%and 20%potato powder respectively for a period of 56 days.Results:Compared with the control group,the average daily feed intake of pigs in 10%potato powder group on 29~56 d and 1~56 d was significantly increased by 3.52%and 1.42%respectively(P<0.05),but the fattening pigs in this group showed the highest fattening ratio on 29~56 d and 1~56 d(P<0.05).The slaughter rate and relative weight of psoas muscle of the fattening pigs in the control group and the 10%potato group were significantly increased by 4.10%,3.73%,4.71%and 3.97%,respectively,compared with the 20%potato powder group(P<0.05).However,the gastrointestinal weight of the fattening pigs in the 20%potato powder group was significantly increased by 22.14%and 16.94%,respectively,compared with the control group and the 10%potato powder group(P<0.05).The muscle fat of the control group and 20%potato powder group was significantly higher than that of 10%potato powder group(P<0.05),and the muscle marbling score of the 20%potato powder group was also significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0.05).The backfat thickness of the control group was significantly increased by 16.26%and 5.86%,respectively,compared with that of the potato powder group(P<0.05).Conclusion:the addition of 10%-20%potato powder to the diet had no significant negative effect on growth and meat quality of the fattening pigs,but reduced carcass yield and muscle tenderness when the potato powder level reached 20%.
