Abstract: | Intact multiparous bovine reproductive tracts at various stages of the oestrous cycle were examined post mortem. The mean length (±SD) of the vagina was 241·0 ± 38·49 mm. Gartner's duct openings were present on the left and right of the external urethral orifice in 61·7 and 68·1% of tracts, respectively.Caudally, the vaginal epithelium—typically 3–6 cell layers thick with a squamous or cuboidal cells luminally—was thicker than in the cranial regions where the epithelium was 1–4 layers thick with a cuboidal or columnar cell luminally. The luminal cells in the cranial regions were filled to a greater or lesser extent with neutral, sialated and sulphated mucins. |
