Conservation Measures for Arable Lands of Northern Hilly Region of India

The northwestern hilly region of India is highly sensitive to human and animal disturbances. The agricultural production on the fragile hill slopes is inevitable for the food, fodder, fiber and energy need of local inhabitants. The suitable conservation measures have been developed to sustain agricultural production without deteriorating the resource. Soil conservation agronomic practices, which are economically sounds for conserving soil on agricultural lands, form the second line of defense. The agronomic practices, which can easily be adopted without extra expenditure, not only result in higher production but also promote soil and water conservation.
