Soil and Water Conservation in Wanjiazhai Key Hydraulic Project
Abstract:As the first one in construction of eight planned hydraulic projects in the middle Yellow River, Wanjiazhai key hydraulic project bears responsibilities for water supply, power generation, and flood and ice flood prevention. The project construction sites occupy 7.5 km 2 of area ,and are located in interim regions of dry grassland, desert and gullied loess hills with original soil erosion modulus of 6 000 to 10 000 t/km 2 and erosion models of water and wind erosion. Wanjiazhai Key Hydraulic Project Co., Ltd. implements comprehensive harness of soil and water loss in the area at the same time of project construction. There have been 5.75 km river dykes lined from 1995 to 1998, 1 900 000 m 3 of waste solid protected, 11 hm 2 land created and 40 000 m 2 grassland planted on the beach of dyke protection. Two dams have been built respectively in Niulangbei gully and Daqing gully for storage of waste solid, waste soil from living area and supplementary construction sites has been harnessed. Trees are planted in slopes and leveled top of waste soil piles, and Common Seabuckthorn of 23 3 hm 2 and Chinese Pine of 36 hm 2 have been planted on waste slopes of acquired land on both sides of the river. Living areas and waste mountains at dam head have been forested.
