Infrared thermography has been used to help in diagnosing lameness. It is hypothesized that, if used in a routine basis, it could help in understanding musculoskeletal modifications during race training. This study aimed to evaluate thermal variation in the musculoskeletal regions of young Thoroughbred (TB) horses during their initial months of race training. Thermographic examinations were performed once every 2 weeks on 16 (10 male, 6 female) two-year-old TB racehorses, from arrival to the racetrack in June 2016, until January 2017, for a total of 16 evaluations. Thermographic imaging was performed using the appropriate protocol. Temperature (°C) was measured at the dorsal and palmar/plantar aspects of specific regions of interest (fetlock, metacarpal, metatarsal, carpal, tarsal, thoracolumbar, sacroiliac spine, and both hips). Initially, we found a thermal balance and all regions demonstrated a positive correlation with one another. However, a significant difference was noted between the left and right sides as training progressed. Four horses were withdrawn from the study after 50% of evaluations because of metacarpal conditions associated with training. Thermographic examination revealed changes before the clinical manifestation of these conditions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that infrared thermography is an image technique that can facilitate understanding of musculoskeletal system modifications to race training and should be further investigated as a predictive tool to anticipate the occurrence of lesions. 相似文献
The racing careers of 2, 3, 4, and 5-year-old Thoroughbreds and French trotters born in France between 1995 and 1999 were analysed. The horses were evaluated on a set of traits, with particular attention to annual or career earnings and number of starts.
As expected, the distributions of earnings corrected for year, age and sex are very skew and thus inappropriate for breeding value estimations. However, Log transformation results in near normal distributions more suitable for this purpose.
Another problem of annual or career earnings required a more complex approach. As most horses did not win any money in France (67% of the trotters and 41% of the Thoroughbreds), it is difficult to correctly evaluate these horses. On the other hand, a linear adjustment of the Log of earnings by the Log of the number of starts (exponential adjustment of the earning index) leads to regression coefficients close to 1. It justified the use of the Log of earnings per start and explained its higher heritability in literature. A quadratic adjustment of the Log of earnings by the Log of the number of starts (sigmoid adjustment of the earning index) improves the adjustment for the Thoroughbred only and should be implemented for these horses.
The probability of a horse to be placed according to the number of starts was also studied. It is shown that the observed percentage of non-placed horses ps according to the number of starts, s, is in all cases inferior to the expected percentage (ps < p1s). Therefore, races of the same horse cannot be considered as independent events. The percentage of horses placed and the mean earnings for each age can be combined in order to estimate the economical weights for each age class. Economical weights for the French trotter were 0.00, 0.21, 0.40, and 0.39 for 2, 3, 4, and 5-year olds respectively. They were 0.11, 0.45, 0.26 and 0.18 respectively for Thoroughbreds of the same age categories. The current tendency to move from annual or career criteria towards criteria at the race level is discussed. However, the question on how to evaluate the important proportion of horses born that never appeared in a race still remains open and should focus future research. 相似文献
The races for the causal agent of spinach downy mildew Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae were identified by inoculation of race-differential cultivars. One isolate was identified as Pfs:5s and the others belonged
to a new race. This is the first report of race Pfs:5 and another new race in Japan. 相似文献
Japanese isolates of Verticillium dahliae, a causal agent of wilt disease in many plants, are classifiable into pathotypes based on their pathogenicity. Because these
pathotypes are morphologically indistinguishable, establishing a rapid identification method is very important for the control
of this pathogen in Japan. For cloning DNA fragments that are useful for identification and specific detection of V. dahliae pathotypes, we performed random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analyses using various isolates. One polymerase chain reaction
(PCR) product, E10-U48, was specific to isolates pathogenic to sweet pepper. The other product, B68-TV, was specific to race
1 of isolates pathogenic to tomato. The specificity of these sequences was confirmed by genomic Southern hybridization. Further
analyses revealed that the region peripheral to B68-TV obtained from the genomic DNA library includes the sequence specific
to all isolates pathogenic to tomato (races 1 and 2). Moreover, sequence tagged site (STS) primers designed from B68-TV and
its peripheral region showed race-specific and pathotype-specific amplification in a PCR assay. The probes and primers obtained
in this study are likely to be useful tools for the identification and specific detection of pathotypes and races of V. dahliae.
