Ocular metastasis of a vaccine-associated fibrosarcoma in a cat

A 6‐year‐old, neutered male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a recurrent vaccine‐associated fibrosarcoma. The cat had three excisions of the tumour prior to presentation and was referred for radiation therapy. Ten months following treatment with radiation therapy, the cat was presented again for a cloudy appearance to the eye. An exenteration was performed, and biopsy revealed fibrosarcoma. At the same time, two discrete pulmonary nodules were identified on thoracic radiographs. Two doses of doxorubicin (20 mg/m²) and cyclophosphamide (100 mg/m²) were administered intravenously 3 weeks apart. Despite treatment, the pulmonary nodule doubled in size. This case represents the first antemortem report of ocular metastasis of a vaccine‐associated sarcoma and supports the highly aggressive nature of these tumours.     

CONCOMITANT LIPOSOMAL DOXORUBICIN AND DAILY PALLIATIVE RADIOTHERAPY IN ADVANCED FELINE SOFT TISSUE SARCOMAS

Local recurrence of feline soft tissue sarcomas is common despite aggressive treatment. Liposomal doxorubicin might serve as a depot radiosensitizer if administered concomitantly with daily radiotherapy and thus improve tumor control. In this pilot study, the feasibility of concomitant liposomal radiochemotherapy was evaluated in a palliative setting in 10 cats with advanced soft tissue sarcomas. Cats were treated with median number of 5 (range 5–7) daily fractions of radiotherapy and a median total dose of 20 Gy (range 20–31.5 Gy). One dose of liposomal doxorubicin was administered at the beginning of radiotherapy. Seven cats received further free or liposomal doxorubicin after completion of the liposomal doxorubicin/radiation protocol. Seven of the treated 10 cats (70%) achieved a partial (n=5) or complete (n=2) response with a median response duration of 237 days. The median progression free interval in all 10 cats was 117 days and the median overall survival time was 324 days. Concomitant liposomal radiochemotherapy was tolerated well in nine cats, one cat experienced temporary anorexia. Although the number of patients is too small to make definitive conclusions, results appear promising enough to investigate the role of liposomal doxorubicin as a radiosensitizer further.

SPONTANEOUS REGRESSION OF PULMONARY METASTASES IN A DOG*

Spontaneous regression of presumed lung metastases was diagnosed in an Irish Wolfhound which had a previous pelvic limb amputation for tibial fibrosarcoma. Literature on spontaneous regression in man is reviewed and implications of spontaneous tumor regression for animal patients are discussed.     

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS — MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF INTRACRANIAL INFLAMMATORY FIBROSARCOMA IN A MIXED BREED DOG

An 8‐year‐old mixed‐breed dog presented with progressive behavioral changes and altered mentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed an olfactory and frontal lobe extra‐axial mass. The mass exhibited the following MRI signal intensity characteristics: T2W mixed, T1W iso‐ to hypointense, FLAIR hyperintense, and strong contrast enhancement. The mass was removed with cavitronic ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) assisted neurosurgery. Based on histopathological appearance and immunohistochemistry, the diagnosis of inflammatory fibrosarcoma was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing MRI characteristics of intracranial inflammatory fibrosarcoma in the veterinary literature.     

Generalized Osteosclerosis in a Cat

A 12-year-old, neutered male, domestic long-hair cat was evaluated for a 6-month history of inspiratory stertor and epiphora. In computed tomography of the skull and pelvis, and radiographs of the thorax, right femur and stifle there was generalized osteosclerosis, with obliteration of the nasal turbinates and nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The cat also had a large fibrosarcoma involving the right pelvic limb. Osteosclerosis is a rare disorder that is poorly understood but has been described in several species. Various manifestations, potential causes, and radiologic findings of osteosclerosis are discussed.     

Spontaneous fibrosarcoma with pleomorphic appearance in an aged brown norway rat

An 18-month-old male Brown Norway (BN) rat showed a grayish-white subcutaneous mass in the right cheek. Histologically, the mass was composed of highly pleomorphic cells producing collagen. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin and partially positive for Ki-67; however, they were negative for ED-1, ED-2, S-100, cytokeratin, desmin and myoglobin. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasms of the tumor cells contained well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Thus, the tumor had no characteristic feature other than collagen production and was diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma.
