Background
Information regarding cardiac changes in domestic cats with acromegaly is limited.Hypothesis/Objectives
The objective of this study was to describe the echocardiographic findings in cats with acromegaly.Animals
Eighteen cats diagnosed with acromegaly at Colorado State University between 2008 and 2012. Of these 18 cats, 11 had echocardiography performed.Methods
A retrospective review of medical records was made to identify cats with acromegaly that also had echocardiography performed.Results
Of the 11 cats identified, 7 had left ventricular concentric hypertrophy, 6 had left atrial enlargement, and 7 had evidence of abnormal diastolic function. All 11 cats had evidence of structural or functional cardiac disease.Conclusions and Clinical Importance
Cardiovascular abnormalities frequently are present in cats with acromegaly, and a complete cardiac evaluation should be considered in these patients. 相似文献4.
In this prospective study 16 cats with diabetes mellitus were examined for concurrent acromegaly by measuring plasma growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pituitary fossa. Additionally, the effects of octreotide administration on the plasma concentrations of glucose, GH, α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol were measured.Five cats were diagnosed with hypersomatotropism. The pituitary was enlarged in these 5 cats and in 2 other cats. Six cats that required a maximum lente insulin dosage ≥1.5 IU/kg body weight per injection had pituitary enlargement and 5 of these cats had acromegaly. Plasma concentrations of GH, ACTH, and cortisol decreased significantly after single intravenous administration of the somatostatin analogue octreotide in the acromegalic cats. The effect on GH concentrations was more pronounced in some of the acromegalic cats than in others. In the non-acromegalic cats only ACTH concentrations decreased significantly. In both groups plasma glucose concentrations increased slightly but significantly, whereas α-MSH concentrations were not significantly affected.In conclusion, the incidence of hypersomatotropism with concomitant pituitary enlargement appears to be high among diabetic cats with severe insulin resistance. Some of these cats responded to octreotide administration with a pronounced decrease in the plasma GH concentration, which suggests that octreotide administration could be used as a pre-entry test for treatment with somatostatin analogues. 相似文献

Objective: Determine the efficacy and safety of a linear-accelerator-based single fraction radiosurgical approach to the treatment of pituitary tumors in cats.
Design: Retrospective study.
Animals: Eleven client-owned cats referred for treatment of pituitary tumors causing neurological signs, or poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (DM) secondary either to acromegaly or pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocortism.
Procedures: Cats underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain to manually plan radiation therapy. After MRI, modified radiosurgery was performed by delivering a single large dose (15 or 20 Gy) of radiation while arcing a linear-accelerator-generated radiation beam around the cat's head with the pituitary mass at the center of the beam. Eight cats were treated once, 2 cats were treated twice, and 1 cat received 3 treatments. Treated cats were evaluated for improvement in endocrine function or resolution of neurological disease by review of medical records or contact with referring veterinarians and owners.
Results: Improvement in clinical signs occurred in 7/11 (63.6%) of treated cats. Five of 9 cats with poorly regulated DM had improved insulin responses, and 2/2 cats with neurological signs had clinical improvement. There were no confirmed acute or late adverse radiation effects. The overall median survival was 25 months (range, 1–60), and 3 cats were still alive.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Single fraction modified radiosurgery is a safe and effective approach to the treatment of pituitary tumors in cats. 相似文献

Background
Ghrelin is a growth hormone secretagogue. It is a potent regulator of energy homeostasis. Ghrelin concentration is down‐regulated in humans with hypersomatotropism (HS) and increases after successful treatment. Additionally, ghrelin secretion seems impaired in human diabetes mellitus (DM).Hypothesis
Serum ghrelin concentration is down‐regulated in cats with HS‐induced DM (HSDM) compared to healthy control cats or cats with DM unrelated to HS and increases after radiotherapy.Animals
Cats with DM (n = 20) and with HSDM (n = 32), 13 of which underwent radiotherapy (RT‐group); age‐matched controls (n = 20).Methods
Retrospective cross‐sectional study. Analytical performance of a serum total ghrelin ELISA was assessed and validated for use in cats. Differences in serum ghrelin, fructosamine, IGF‐1 and insulin were evaluated.Results
Ghrelin was significantly higher (P < .001) in control cats (mean ± SD: 12.9 ± 6.8 ng/mL) compared to HSDM‐ (7.9 ± 3.3 ng/mL) and DM‐cats (6.7 ± 2.3 ng/mL), although not different between the HSDM‐ and DM‐cats. After RT ghrelin increased significantly (P = .003) in HSDM‐cats undergoing RT (from 6.6 ± 1.9 ng/mL to 9.0 ± 2.2 ng/mL) and the after RT ghrelin concentrations of HSDM cats were no longer significantly different from the serum ghrelin concentration of control cats. Serum IGF‐1 did not significantly change in HSDM‐cats after RT, despite significant decreases in fructosamine and insulin dose.Conclusion and Clinical Importance
Ghrelin appears suppressed in cats with DM and HSDM, although increases after RT in HSDM, suggesting possible presence of a direct or indirect negative feedback system between growth hormone and ghrelin. Serum ghrelin might therefore represent a marker of treatment effect. 相似文献9.
