A male zebra aged about 7 years, weighing approximately 250 kg showed signs of lameness on its hindquarter. It was treated by the zoo veterinarians symptomatically, and it recovered. However, there was recurrence of the symptoms after 1 month. The animal was treated with fluid, electrolyte, antibiotic, and analgesic therapy. The hematology and serum biochemistry profiles were tested and found within the normal range. The animal was tranquilized, and physical and external examinations were conducted. Radiological examination of hoof ruled out any chances of laminitis or any other hoof deformities. Per-rectal examination along with flexion and extension of the hind limbs could not reveal any abnormalities. However, there was no improvement, and finally it died. Postmortem examination revealed an internal deep gluteal abscess. This is a rare report of deep gluteal abscess in a zebra. The difficulties encountered in diagnosing the case and its serious possible complications and possible methods of diagnosing have been described, which may help future equine and wildlife vets in diagnosing such cases successfully and may help in saving the precious lives of the patients suffering from such conditions.

Background
Sepsis caused by Staphylococcus aureus often leads to brain microabscesses in humans. Animal models of haematogenous brain abscesses would be useful to study this condition in detail. Recently, we developed a model of S. aureus sepsis in pigs and here we report that brain microabscesses develop in pigs with such induced S. aureus sepsis.Twelve pigs were divided into three groups. Nine pigs received an intravenous inoculation of S. aureus once at time 0 h (group 1) or twice at time 0 h and 12 h (groups 2 and 3). In each group the fourth pig served as control. The pigs were euthanized at time 12 h (Group 1), 24 h (Group 2) and 48 h (Group 3) after the first inoculation. The brains were collected and examined histopathologically. Results
All inoculated pigs developed sepsis and seven out of nine pigs developed brain microabscesses. The microabscesses contained S. aureus and were located in the prosencephalon and mesencephalon. Chorioditis and meningitis occurred from 12 h after inoculation. Conclusions
Pigs with experimental S. aureus sepsis often develop brain microabscesses. The porcine brain pathology mirrors the findings in human sepsis patients. We therefore suggest the pig as a useful animal model of the development of brain microabscesses caused by S. aureus sepsis.

Background
Three Brown Swiss cows with abnormal regurgitation because of a perioesophageal disorder are described.Case presentation
The cows were ill and had poor appetite, salivation and regurgitation of poorly-chewed feed. Collection of rumen juice was successful in one cow, and in another, the tube could be advanced to the level of the 7th intercostal space, and in the third, only saliva could be collected. In one cow, oesophagoscopy revealed a discoloured 10-cm mucosal area with fibrin deposits. Thoracic radiographs were normal. The cows were euthanased and examined postmortem. Cow 1 had a large perioesophageal abscess containing feed material at the level of the thoracic inlet, believed to be the result of a healed oesophageal injury. Cow 2 had an abscess between the oesophagus and trachea 25 cm caudal to the epiglottis with the same presumed aetiology as in cow 1. Cow 3 had a mediastinal carcinoma that enclosed and constricted the oesophagus. Conclusions
Abnormal regurgitation in cattle is usually the result of an oesophageal disorder. Causes of oesophageal disorders vary widely and their identification can be difficult.
