Implications of intraguild predation for sea turtle nest protection

In the United States, raccoons Procyon lotor are often removed from sea turtle nesting beaches to decrease egg mortality. However, raccoons also consume ghost crabs Ocypode quadrata, another common egg predator. Reducing predator populations can benefit secondary predators, inflating total predation pressure and leading to a decline in prey species. We used track and burrow counts to compare raccoon and ghost crab abundance at four beaches in Florida, USA, that differ in management activity and determined predation rates on loggerhead Caretta caretta nests by each predator. Mean raccoon abundance (range 0.12-0.46 tracks plot⁻¹ night⁻¹) and ghost crab density (0.09-0.19 burrows m⁻²) were inversely correlated. Ghost crabs were largest at the site with the fewest raccoons. The stable nitrogen isotope ratios of ghost crabs (mean 9.8‰) were positively correlated with body mass, indicating larger ghost crabs feed at a higher trophic level and suggesting large ghost crabs may consume more loggerhead eggs. The highest rates of egg predation by both predators (31%) occurred where raccoon abundance was lowest and ghost crab abundance was highest, suggesting ghost crab burrows may facilitate predation by raccoons. Our data suggest that predation by raccoons limits ghost crabs and that removing raccoons can increase ghost crab abundance and sea turtle egg mortality. Although predator removal can be effective when nest predation rates are quite high, maintaining moderate raccoon densities may be important for controlling ghost crabs. These results highlight the importance of understanding food web connectivity in developing management strategies to achieve conservation goals, especially when the species of concern are threatened or facing extinction.

Passive protection against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis infection from maternally derived antibodies of hens vaccinated with a ghost vaccine

This study evaluated maternal immunity against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis acquired through the egg yolk. Two-hundred 19-week-old specific pathogen free (SPF) broiler breeders which were randomly divided into two groups of equal size were injected with S. Enteritidis ghosts (5 × 10⁹ colony forming units in 0.1 ml per hen) and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, 0.01 mol⋅l⁻¹, pH 7.4) twice, respectively, with an interval of 2 weeks. An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to detect specific antibodies against S. Enteritidis. S. Enteritidis-specific antibody levels in the vaccinated group increased over time and were significantly higher than those of the control group on days 28 (P < 0.001) and 35 (P < 0.001) post-vaccination. Ten 7-day-old chicks from hens that were vaccinated with a S. Enteritidis ghost vaccine were challenged at 14 days of age with 5 × 10⁹ CFU of S. Enteritidis DH091 (homologous to the vaccine strain), 8/10 (80%) chicks from vaccinated hens survived, whereas 3/10 (30%) chicks from unvaccinated hens survived. The chicks acquired high levels of serum antibodies against S. Enteritidis. These results reveal that maternal antibodies in chicks acquired from vaccinated hens through eggs can confer a significant protection against S. Enteritidis infection.     

Comparison of methods for sampling populations of ghost shrimp, Trypaea australiensis (Decapoda: Thalassinidea: Callianassidae)

Coring and pumping methods, commonly used to determine the abundance and population parameters of burrowing ghost shrimp, were assessed in three widely separated south-eastern Australian estuaries. First, a comparison of two sizes of coring tube (0.04 and 0.07 m²) revealed no significant differences in catches of the ghost shrimp Trypaea australiensis Dana, nor differences in precision. However, the smaller sized core was consistently more cost effective. Second, when sampling a 0.1 m² quadrat, it was found that 12 “pumps” of a suction pump produced significantly higher numbers of individuals at most sites than using either four, eight or 16 pumps. In a third set of experiments, the coring method was compared to the pumping method, in terms of sampling efficiency, abundance estimates and sex ratios of captured ghost shrimp. Pumping was found to be more efficient, catching significantly greater numbers of ghost shrimp per minute than the coring. In addition, pump catches displayed a more normal size distribution than catches from the core and included a wider range of sizes. Sex ratios of catches from coring was 1:1, while catches from pumping were significantly biased toward females (0.71:1). Since female-biased sex ratios are characteristic of many thalassinid populations, this latter result probably reflects actual sex ratios for T. australiensis and not method based size selectivity.
