An experiment that investigated the establishment of seven grass and legume seed mixes on opencast coal mining spoil in South Wales is described. After three years, mixtures containing Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra var. rubra were the most successful in covering the spoil; the ‘Johnson JR33’ seed mix proved the best of those commercially available that was tested. Tree growth was not detrimentally affected by the establishment of a grass ground cover. Erosion was not an important process at the experimental site, though slumping occurred locally from plough ridge to plough furrow.  相似文献

Abstract. Demand for water from catchments dominated by upland peat as a source of drinking water supplies in the UK is likely to increase in the future as demand per capita continues to rise (Thomsen 1990) and/or summer droughts increase in frequency (Arnell 1992). Concern has been expressed in recent years over rising colour levels (related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and iron (Fe)) from such catchments (e.g. Kay et al. 1989) causing reduced drinking water quality. One of the major causes of increased DOC concentrations is rewetting following periods of relative drought (Mitchell & McDonald 1992). Experimental rewetting of a naturally drained wetland in Mid‐Wales over four years was found to substantially increase the concentrations of DOC, and Fe in the pore‐water, with peak values of >60 mg dm–3 (Fe) and >300 mg dm–3 (DOC) after rewetting, compared with typical values of <1 mgdm–3 (Fe) and <15 mg dm–3 (DOC) under the drained conditions. Seasonal peak concentrations of Fe and DOC have since remained at these higher levels. Rewetting produced a selective enrichment of the >5000 to <90 000 apparent molecular weight (AMW) material and this fraction was found to yield peak Fe concentrations. Two additional peaks of DOC were also found in the experimental wetland (not present in the control wetland), of >90 000 to <200 000 AMW and >200 000 AMW material. The AMW spectrum of DOC in the experimental wetland changed with season, and the >90 000 to <200 000 AMW fraction could only be seen in spring, representing a transient pool of carbon that is rapidly transformed in or transported from the wetland. These findings suggest that rewetting of peatland following drought (e.g. due to climate change) has the potential to reduce water quality. Moreover, recent interest in restoration (rewetting) of drained peatlands (Wheeler & Shaw 1995) could create an additional source of DOC rich water.  相似文献

Annual surveys of winter wheat diseases in England and Wales provide information on the relative severity of the leaf and stem-base disease complex. Septoria tritici was the most damaging disease during the 5-year period 1985–1989 causing annual losses estimated to be 0.329 Mt compared with 0.251 Mt and 0.231 Mt for eyespot and mildew, the next most damaging winter wheat diseases. Annual losses during the period averaged 1.078 Mt excluding losses attributable to the fusarium diseases, for which no satisfactory yield loss relationships are available. Sowing date and length of break from cereals exert a strong influence on incidence of eyespot and losses attributable to the disease and, on the basis of these surveys, growing all winter wheat crops after a 1-year break would prevent national losses of 100 kt annually.  相似文献

Abstract. England and Wales have 155 314 1 × 1 km squares, of which 140049 have more than 50% soil cover. The total soil organic carbon content, based on the dominant soil series and dominant land cover type, is estimated to be 2773 × 106 t C. Scotland has 84929 1 × 1 km squares, of which 82 420 have a nominated dominant soil series. The total soil organic carbon content is estimated to be 19011 × 106 t C, 6.85 times the total organic carbon content of the soil of England and Wales. The total organic carbon content of the soil of Great Britain is estimated to be 21 784 × 106 t C, of which 87% is in Scottish soils and 75% is in Scottish peats. A map of the mean soil organic carbon content of 10 × 10 km squares of the National Grid using classes of equal range illustrates the narrow range of organic carbon contents of the soils of England and Wales and the dominance of organic carbon in Scottish soils. A map using the same data, but with classes of unequal ranges increasing in size with increasing carbon content, is better for showing detailed differences within England and Wales.  相似文献

Abstract. The incidence of soil water erosion was monitored in 12 erosion-susceptible arable catchments ( c . 80 fields) in England and Wales between 1990 and 1994. Factors associated with the initiation of erosion were recorded, and the extent of rills and gullies measured. Approximately 80% of the erosion events were on land cropped to winter cereals. In 30% of cases, the initiation of erosion was linked to valley floor features, which concentrated runoff. Poor crop cover, wheelings and tramlines were also assessed as contributory factors in 22%, 19% and 14% of cases, respectively. In c . 95% of cases rainfall events causing erosion were ≥10 mm day−1 and c . 80% were >15 mm day−1. Erosion was also associated with maximum rainfall intensities of >4 mm h−1 for c . 90% of cases and >10 mm h−1 for c . 20%. Mean net soil erosion rates were approximately 4 t ha−1 per annum (median value 0.41 t ha−1 per annum) and associated mean P losses 3.4 kg ha−1.  相似文献

Large tracts of land, officially described as ‘reclaimed’ from former mineral workings, are in poor condition. Problems include gullying, soil erosion, soil compaction, accelerated run-off and poor vegetation cover. Some of these problems are caused by low quality and inappropriate engineering. Some are due to poor land husbandry. There is a need for a national system of quality control inspection for land reclamation sites and provision for training in the special problems of managing reclaimed lands. However, many further problems result from natural soil-forming processes, notably the accelerated breakdown of newly exposed minestones. This chokes the soils with fine particles, decreasing permeability and increasing bulk density. Current research directed to correcting this problem uses trees to build new self-sustaining soils from the ground up and to promote the development of a large and active community of soil organisms. It is hoped that the polysaccharide secretions of these organisms will bind the newly created clays into stable soil aggregates.  相似文献

Satellite remote sensing offers the potential to accurately identify and monitor spectrally separable land-cover classes at a range of spatial and temporal scales. This paper investigates the separability of despoiled land in imagery acquired by sensors carried by the Landsat satellites. These systems offer the opportunity to map areas at large to medium scales at a relatively high temporal frequency and so provide information on environmental quality necessary for many monitoring and planning activities. From an investigation using imagery of South Wales it was found that despoiled land was separable from other classes in the Landsat TM imagery, with an accuracy of over 90 per cent. Furthermore, with Landsat TM data three spectral wavebands were found to provide a level of separability similar to that based on all wavebands available, illustrating potential savings to the analyst. Despoiled land cover was classified from Landsat TM and MSS data and these classifications were evaluated against a manually produced map of despoiled land cover derived from the interpretation of aerial photographs. Estimates of the extent of despoiled land cover in administrative units derived from the Landsat TM data were significantly correlated (r = 0.81) with the map based estimates, although a weaker correlation was observed with Landsat MSS data.  相似文献

A cross-sectional survey of Renibacterium salmoninarum infection in farmed rainbow trout (RBT) and wild fish populations was carried out in 10 farms and six river catchments, respectively, in England and Wales. The majority of the wild fish were sampled in 1998 and the farmed fish in 2000. Grayling, Thymallus thymallus, and brown trout, Salmo trutta, were the main wild species sampled. Two fish, one grayling and one salmon, Salmo salar, were R. salmoninarum culture-positive, compared with 40 confirmed polymerase chain reaction-positive wild fish. The highest prevalence of R. salmoninarum infection was found in grayling in rivers with RBT farms with a history of R. salmoninarum infection. One hundred and fifty fish were sampled from each RBT farm, but none of the fish was found to be R. salmoninarum-positive. Evidence was found, for the first time, for the presence of R. salmoninarum in an eel, Anguilla anguilla.  相似文献

Possibilities for growing dryland lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) productively in drier parts of central-western and western New South Wales (NSW) were investigated by consideration of meteorological records. Annual rainfall data and estimated evapotranspiration data for 1995-1999 were compiled to calculate lucerne growing days and N2-fixing days at Condobolin, Trangie, Cobar and Wentworth. This information was used in conjunction with seasonal indices of dry matter production and nitrogen fixation derived from the work of Bowman et al. [Aust J Exp Agric 42 (2002) 439] at Trangie to estimate yearly biomass production and N2 fixation for the four locations. It was concluded that (i) there are good prospects for growing lucerne productively on suitable soils located in that extensive region of central-western and western NSW between the 450 and 300 mm isohyets if it is feasible to develop techniques for establishment and management to maintain stands at an acceptable density—not less than eight plants/m2, (ii) there are only poor prospects for growing lucerne in those western parts of the state where annual rainfall averages less 300 mm, and (iii) annual rainfall, irrespective of other factors such as erratic distribution, is a rough guide to potential lucerne production. In addition, there were indications that, were the threshold for cessation of lucerne N2 fixation reduced by 2 °C (say from 10 to 8 °C), annual N2 fixation would be enhanced by more than 20%.  相似文献

Abstract. Generally, traditional soil surveys do not adequately account for the spatial variability of soil properties. Maps that are derived using these cursory soil data are likely to contain errors and thus make interpretation and soil management difficult. On the other hand quantitative methods of soil inventory at the field scale involve the design and adoption of sampling regimes and laboratory analysis that are time consuming and costly. In the latter case new technologies are required to efficiently sample and observe the soil in the field. This is particularly the case where soil salinization is prevalent, and detailed quantitative information for determining its cause is required. In this paper, a Mobile Electromagnetic Sensing System (MESS) is described and its application in an irrigated-cotton field, located in the lower Namoi valley in New South Wales, Australia. Results from the EM38 instrument were found to be correlated with the effective cation exchange capacity ( r 2= 0.81). This was related to variability in soil mineralogy across the field. In addition, differences in soil chemical and textural variables, measured along a transect and adjacent to water storage, were used to identify seepage areas near a water reservoir where soil salinization was evident.  相似文献
