The persistent efficacy of four commercially available macrocyclic lactones (ML) in maintaining reduced faecal egg counts in cattle grazing naturally infested pastures was evaluated in 44 zebu animals aged 1–2 years in Zambia. The study started in February (rainy season) when the strongyle egg output was increasing. Four days before the start of the trial, all animals were treated with a double dose of oxfendazole. They were then divided into five groups which were again treated on day 0. Groups A, D, I and M received 0.2 mg kg−1 of abamectin, doramectin, ivermectin and moxidectin, respectively. Animals of group C received albendazole (7.5 mg kg−1). Faecal samples were collected twice a week for egg counts and larval differentiation. Faecal egg counts in the C group increased from day 21 onwards and plateaued from day 42 between 180 and 380 eggs per gram. The main genera found in cultures were Cooperia (90%) and Haemonchus (7%). Faecal egg excretion in groups M, A, D and I started on day 35, 42, 42 and 45, respectively. subsequently and until day 84, average counts in these four groups were always significantly lower than in group C. Compared with albendazole, all four ML gave over 95% reduction in cumulative faecal egg counts for 42 days after treatment. The percentage efficacy was still over 84% by day 84 when an average cumulative egg count of 11 320 eggs per gram faeces was calculated in group C. In addition, there was no significant difference in efficacy between the four ML groups at any of the sampling dates. During the trial no significant difference in weight gain between any of the groups was observed.

Multipurpose trees, the integral components of homegardens, contribute significantly to the closed nutrient cycling processes
and sustainability of the ecosystem. Although, the litter production and probable nutrient returns via litter in homegardens
have been documented, quantification and characterization of the decomposition and bioelement release from the litter have
received relatively little scientific attention. The objective of the present study is to explore the litter dynamics of six
locally important multipurpose trees (Mangifera indica L., Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk., Anacardium occidentale L., Ailanthus triphysa Dennst., Artocarpus hirsutus L. and Swietenia macrophylla L.), in an agroforestry homegarden in Southern Kerala, India. Litterfall and nutrient additions in the six species ranged
from 383 to 868 g m−2 yr−1, nitrogen, 6.4 to 8.8, phosphorus, 0.17 to 0.42 and potassium, 1.1 to 2.8 g m−2 yr−1. The annual litter output in the homegarden was 425 kg with A. hirsutus, M. indica, A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale recording significantly higher litter and nutrient additions. Leaf litter decay studies revealed A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale to be the most labile litter species and S. macrophylla the most recalcitrant. The decay rate coefficients varied significantly among the species. Foliage decomposition rates related
to the initial chemical composition of the litter revealed best correlation with lignin. NPK release was almost complete by
the end of decay in all species inspite of the initial phases of accumulation observed for nitrogen and phosphorus. Two-way
analysis of variance test revealed significant differences in the contents of the three elements as a function of species
and time elapsed. Macronutrients were released in the order K>N/P. The higher rates of decay and nutrient turnover in M. indica, A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale foliage indicated the potential of using these species’ litter as nutrient inputs in agriculture while A. triphysa, A. hirsutus and S. macrophylla perform better as organic mulches taking a longer time for decay and hence nutrient release.

Genetically modified crops, that produce Cry insecticidal crystal proteins (Cry) from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), release these toxins into soils through root exudates and upon decomposition of residues. The fate of these toxins in soil has not yet been clearly elucidated. Persistence can be influenced by biotic (degradation by microorganisms) and abiotic factors (physicochemical interactions with soil components, especially adsorption). The aim of this study was to follow the fate of Cry1Aa Bt toxin in contrasting soils subjected to different treatments to enhance or inhibit microbial activity, in order to establish the importance of biotic and abiotic processes for the fate of Bt toxin. The toxin was efficiently extracted from each soil using an alkaline buffer containing a protein, bovine serum albumin, and a nonionic surfactant, Tween 20. The marked decline of extractable toxin after incubation of weeks to months was soil-dependent. The decrease of extractable toxin with incubation time was not related to microbial degradation but mainly to physicochemical interactions with the surfaces that may decrease immunochemical detectability or enhance protein fixation. Hydrophobic interactions may play an important role in determining the interaction of the toxin with surfaces.

Although the five species of prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) are recognized as important components of grassland ecosystems in western North America, they have experienced major population declines due to poisoning, outbreaks of sylvatic plague, recreational shooting, and habitat conversion. From May 2000 to October 2001, we investigated 270 colonies of Gunnison’s prairie dog (Cynomys gunnisoni) in Arizona. Because these colonies were classified as active in previous surveys (1987, 1990-1994, 1998), we were able to examine their persistence. Most (70%) of the colonies became inactive between the initial and recent surveys, with colony extinctions spanning our study area. Colony persistence was positively associated with the persistence of the nearest neighboring colony but was not associated with major vegetation type, distance to nearest neighboring colony, or initial size of the colony. The amount of area occupied by individual colonies varied between surveys, sometimes dramatically. We found little evidence that the reduction in active colonies was due to poisoning, recreational shooting, or habitat conversion. Rather, direct and indirect evidence suggest plague is the primary factor negatively impacting Gunnison’s prairie dog populations in Arizona. Currently, there is no way to control or prevent plague outbreaks in Gunnison’s prairie dog populations. To mitigate the effects of localized plague outbreaks on the overall population of this species, we suggest that Gunnison’s prairie dog be reintroduced to public lands throughout its historical range.

Effects of repeated metolachlor applications on its persistence in field soil and degradation kinetics in mixed microbial cultures
The persistence of metolachlor, a soil-applied herbicide, was studied under field conditions involving repeated herbicide
applications. The test field received four applications of metolachlor over an 8-month period, which included two cropping
seasons. There was a trend for more rapid rates of degradation with increasing numbers of previous treatments, with fifty
percent dissipation time (DT50) of metolachlor declining from 18 days in the first spray to 2.5 days in the fourth spray. An effort was made to isolate
the microbial population which had become acclimated to the herbicide from this field soil. A fungal community isolated from
this soil showed the capacity to degrade up to 99.6% of the metolachlor within a span of 20 days. The bacterial community
isolated could also degrade up to 81.5% of the metolachlor. Hence, this study clearly indicated that repeated applications
of metolachlor to soil resulted in the generation of an adapted microbial population with an enhanced ability to degrade the
applied herbicide.

Leave patches, uncut areas in a harvested forest, may conserve herbaceous layer species that decline after forest clearcutting. They may also serve to maintain source populations for the recolonization of the harvest area. The main objective of this study is to characterize the short-term response of the herbaceous layer to clearcut harvesting disturbance within and adjacent to leave patches. Four experimental 1 ha patches and two uncut references were established. Within each patch or reference, belts of five 1 m2 quadrats were placed at 50 m and 5 m outside the patch, at 0 m (edge), and at 25 m, 35 m, and 50 m (centre) inside. These belts of quadrats were replicated at all four aspects (North, South, East, and West). Ground vegetation was sampled yearly for 1 year before harvest and 3 years after harvest in the experimental patches and for 2 consecutive years in the references. Some common residual species declined significantly in the clearcuts, but remained stable inside the patches in the short term (3 years after harvest). Overall species composition changed little in the patch interior and edge after harvest. Colonizing species (those that appeared in quadrats after harvest) in the patch exterior were predominantly early-seral species, whereas colonizers in the patch interior tended to be shade-tolerant forest species. Species were grouped a priori based on two habitat preferences (amounts of canopy cover and disturbed substrate). Species characteristic of a habitat with closed canopy and undisturbed substrates that decreased significantly over time in the patch exterior were negatively correlated with the amount of exposed mineral soil and open canopy. Species characteristic of a habitat with open canopy and disturbed substrates that increased significantly at the patch exterior showed a positive correlation with the amount of exposed mineral soil and open canopy. No species’ habitat preference groups declined significantly in the patch interior or edge over time. Based on species’ responses to forest operations, it appears that at least the common forest species are maintained in the short term within leave patches.

Toxicity effects and field persistence of the insect growth regulators lufenuron, flufenoxuron and triflumuron were assessed in the laboratory using second and fourth larval instars of Spodoptera littoralis. Laboratory bioassays indicated that lufenuron was more effective on both 2nd and 4th larval instars, as well as killing both larval instars faster than flufenoxuron or triflumuron. Field-laboratory experiments were conducted to show direct and residual effects of the tested IGRs in terms of toxicity and stability. They indicated that all the tested insecticides were stable under field conditions and give high percentages of mortality. Overall, lufenuron was more efficient than the other tested insecticides. In addition, it gave a faster kill in some testing periods. Data presented in this work show greater efficiency of lufenuron in controlling S. littoralis than flufenoxuron or triflumuron. Using this insecticide for cotton leafworm control in cotton fields may give better results under field condition.
