OBJECTIVE: To quantify variation in the jumping technique within and among young horses with little jumping experience, establish relationships between kinetic and kinematic variables, and identify a limited set of variables characteristic for detecting differences in jumping performance among horses. ANIMALS: Fifteen 4-year-old Dutch Warmblood horses. PROCEDURE: The horses were raised under standardized conditions and trained in accordance with a fixed protocol for a short period. Subsequently, horses were analyzed kinematically during free jumping over a fence with a height of 1.05 m. RESULTS: Within-horse variation in all variables that quantified jumping technique was smaller than variation among horses. However, some horses had less variation than others. Height of the center of gravity (CG) at the apex of the jump ranged from 1.80 to 2.01 m among horses; this variation could be explained by the variation in vertical velocity of the CG at takeoff (r, 0.78). Horses that had higher vertical velocity at takeoff left the ground and landed again farther from the fence, had shorter push-off phases for the forelimbs and hind limbs, and generated greater vertical acceleration of the CG primarily during the hind limb push-off. However, all horses cleared the fence successfully, independent of jumping technique. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Each horse had its own jumping technique. Differences among techniques were characterized by variations in the vertical velocity of the CG at takeoff. It must be determined whether jumping performance later in life can be predicted from observing free jumps of young horses.  相似文献

An indirect enzyme immunoassay is described for detection of porcine serum antibody to pseudorabies virus. The analytical sensitivity of the enzyme immunoassay was found to be approximately 4.5 log 4 X 10 (5120 times) greater than the serum neutralization test, based on parallel end point titrations. The diagnostic sensitivity of the enzyme immunoassay was comparable or superior to that of the serum neutralization, based on the earliest detectable antibody after infection of swine with pseudorabies virus by intranasal or intrauterine routes or by contact with infected pigs. The enzyme immunoassay, at a screening dilution of 1:20, gave 100% agreement with ELISA results provided with a U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service proficiency panel of 40 sera. One serum having demonstrable antibody by the enzyme immunoassay was seronegative by the serum neutralization test.  相似文献

A quantitative indirect immunoperoxidase plaque staining method was developed for the detection of pseudorabies virus infection in a pig kidney cell line (PK-15). The method is rapid and specific and foci of infection, represented by stained plaques, are easily counted by the unaided eye. Possible modification of this technique in a plaque reduction assay for the detection of antipseudorabies virus antibody is also discussed.  相似文献

Combining ability information is necessary for selection of suitable advanced lines for hybridization and identification of promising hybrids for development of improved varieties. A number of 14 maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines and 91 related crosses were evaluated over two years, 2008 and 2009, in a temperate-zone of Iran. The objectives of the study were to identify the best general and specific combiners, heterosis and type of gene actions responsible for agronomic traits. Except for grain yield and growing degree day to milky, significant general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability were observed for all traits. The Baker ratio for plant height (0.15), ear height (0.26), growing degree day to milky stage (0.04), and grain yield (0.002) showed the predominance of non-additive gene effects in the expression of these traits. The heterosis observed for grain yield, grain number, pollination period, ear and plant height was considerably higher than that observed for other traits. The correlations (r) of F1 means and SCA effects were positive and significantly higher than that of r (F1, mid-parents) and r (F1, heterosis) for all the traits except cob percent, growing degree days to silking, and physiological maturity. MO17, K3547/5, and K3615/2 had negative GCA effects for growing degree day to milky stage and maturity. Among hybrids, MO17 × K3653/2, B73 × K3651/2, and K3545/6 × K3493/1 with positive SCAs for pollination period and grain yield had also negative SCA effects for degree day to silking and milky stages. Therefore, the use of these inbred lines and hybrids increases the response to selection for increasing grain yield and early maturity in maize.  相似文献

Phosphorus is an essential element required to maintain profitable crop production. Most soils of the tropics, such as Ultisols, are acidic and fix phosphorus because of their characteristically high contents of aluminium and iron. Compost and biochar could be used to mitigate phosphorus fixation by reducing the phosphorus sorption sites. This study aimed to: (i) improve soil phosphorus availability, nutrient uptake, and yield of maize using biochar and pineapple leaf residue compost; and (ii) determine if the use of biochar and compost could exert a residual effect on phosphorus nutrition in the second cycle of the field trial. Field trials were carried out using a Zea mays L. hybrid as the test crop. At harvest, the plants were harvested, partitioned into leaves and stems, and analyzed. Soil samples were also collected and analyzed. Ears were harvested to determine the yield from each treatment. The results suggest that the soil total phosphorus and available phosphorus recovered from the treatments with the organic amendments were higher compared with the non-organic amendments. The availability of soil nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium) in the soils and yield of maize were higher in the treatments with the organic amendments in the first and second field trials. These results further confirm that amending chemical fertilizers with organic amendments have a larger residual effect than chemical fertilizers only. Amending chemical fertilizers with organic amendments can be used to ameliorate phosphorus fixation of acid soils to improve maize production on acid soils.  相似文献

The anionic nature and high cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clinoptilolite zeolite can be exploited to reduce ammonia (NH3) loss from urea and to improve soil chemical properties to increase nutrient utilization efficiency in lowland rice cultivation. A closed-dynamic airflow system was used to determine NH3 loss from treatments (20, 40, and 60 g clinoptilolite zeolite pot?1). Seed germination study was conducted to evaluate the effects of clinoptilolite zeolite on rice seed germination. A pot study was conducted to determine the effects of clinoptilolite zeolite on rice plant growth variables, nutrient uptake, nutrient recovery, and soil chemical properties. Standard procedures were used to determine NH3 loss, rice plant height, number of leaves, number of tillers, dry matter production, nutrient uptake, nutrient recovery, and soil chemical properties. Application of clinoptilolite zeolite (15%) increased shoot elongation of seedlings and significantly reduced NH3 loss (up to 26% with 60 g zeolite pot?1), and increased number of leaves, total dry matter, nutrient uptake, nutrient recovery, soil pH, CEC, and exchangeable Na+. Amending acid soils with clinoptilolite zeolite can significantly minimize NH3 loss and improve rice plant growth variables, nutrient uptake, nutrient recovery, and soil chemical properties. These findings are being validated in our ongoing field trials.  相似文献
