Hypertrophic scarring and poor intrinsic axon growth capacity constitute major obstacles for spinal cord repair. These processes are tightly regulated by microtubule dynamics. Here, moderate microtubule stabilization decreased scar formation after spinal cord injury in rodents through various cellular mechanisms, including dampening of transforming growth factor-β signaling. It prevented accumulation of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans and rendered the lesion site permissive for axon regeneration of growth-competent sensory neurons. Microtubule stabilization also promoted growth of central nervous system axons of the Raphe-spinal tract and led to functional improvement. Thus, microtubule stabilization reduces fibrotic scarring and enhances the capacity of axons to grow.  相似文献

In the present study, 500 steers were used to develop models for predicting the percentage of intramuscular fat (PIMF) in live beef cattle. Before slaughter, steers were scanned across the 11th and 13th ribs using Aloka 500V (AL-500) and Classic Scanner 200 (CS-200) machines. Four to five images were collected per individual steer using each machine. After slaughter, a cross-sectional slice of the longissimus muscle from the 12th rib facing was used for chemical extraction to determine actual carcass percentage of intramuscular fat (CPIMF). Texture analysis software was used by two interpreters to select a region for determination of image parameters, which included Fourier, gradient, histogram, and co-occurrence parameters. Four prediction models were developed separately for each of AL-500 and CS-200 based on images captured by the respective machines. These included models developed without transformation of CPIMF (Model I), models based on logarithmic transformation of CPIMF (Model II), ridge regression procedure (Model III), and principal component regression procedure (Model IV). Model R2 and root mean square error of AL-500 Models I, II, III, and IV were 0.72, 0.84%; 0.72, 0.85%; 0.69, 0.91%; and 0.71, 0.86%; respectively. The corresponding R2 and root mean square error values of CS-200 Models I, II, III, and IV were 0.68, 0.87%; 0.70, 0.85%; 0.64, 0.94%; and 0.65, 0.91%; respectively. Initially, AL-500 and CS-200 prediction models were validated separately on an independent data set from 71 feedlot steers. The overall mean bias, standard error of prediction, and rank correlation coefficient across the four AL-500 models were 0.42%, 0.84%, and 0.88, respectively. For the four CS-200 models, the corresponding overall mean values were 0.67%, 0.81%, and 0.91, respectively. In a second validation test, only Model II of AL-500 and CS-200 was evaluated separately based on data from 24 feedlot steers. The overall mean bias, absolute difference, and standard error of prediction of AL-500 Model II were 0.71, 0.92, and 0.98%. For CS-200 Model II, the corresponding values were 0.59, 0.97, and 1.03%. Both AL-500 and CS-200 equipment can be used to accurately predict PIMF in live cattle. Further improvement in the accuracy of prediction equations could be achieved through increasing the development data set and the variation in PIMF of cattle used.  相似文献

Five hundred thirty-four steers were evaluated over a 2-yr period to determine the accuracy of ultrasonic estimates of carcass 12th-rib fat thickness (CFAT) and longissimus muscle area (CLMA). Within 5 d before slaughter, steers were ultrasonically measured for 12th-rib fat thickness (UFAT) and longissimus muscle area (ULMA) using an Aloka 500V real-time ultrasound machine equipped with a 17.2-cm, 3.5-MHz linear transducer. Overall, correlation coefficients between ultrasound and carcass fat and longissimus muscle area were 0.89 and 0.86, respectively. Correlations for UFAT with CFAT were similar between years (0.86 and 0.90), whereas the relationship between ULMA and CLMA was stronger in yr 1 (r = 0.91; n = 282) than in yr 2 (r = 0.79; n = 252). Differences between ultrasonic and carcass measurements were expressed on both an actual (FDIFF and RDIFF) and absolute (FDEV and RDEV) basis. Mean FDIFF and RDIFF indicated that ultrasound underestimated CFAT by 0.06 cm and overestimated CLMA by 0.71 cm2 across both years. Overall mean FDEV and RDEV, which are indications of the average error rate, were 0.16 cm and 3.39 cm2, respectively. Analysis of year effects revealed that FDIFF, FDEV, and RDEV were greater (P < 0.01) in magnitude in yr 1. Further analysis of FDEV indicated that leaner (CFAT < 0.51 cm) cattle were overestimated and that fatter (CFAT > 1.02 cm) cattle were underestimated with ultrasound. Similarly, steers with small CLMA (< 71.0 cm2) were overestimated, and steers with large CLMA (> 90.3 cm2) were underestimated. The thickness of CFAT had an effect (P < 0.05) on the error of UFAT and ULMA measurements, with leaner animals being more accurately evaluated for both traits. Standard errors of prediction (SEP) adjusted for bias of ultrasound measurements were 0.20 cm and 4.49 cm2 for UFAT and ULMA, respectively. Differences in SEP were observed for ULMA, but not UFAT, by year. These results indicate that ultrasound can be an accurate estimator of carcass traits in live cattle when measurements are taken by an experienced, well-trained technician, with only small differences in accuracy between years.  相似文献

Effects of diethyl suberate (DESU), diethyl sebacate (DES), dibutyl suberate (DBSU), dibutyl sebacate (DBS), and tributyl phosphate (TBP) on diffusion of 14C-2,4-dichlorophenoxy butyric acid (2,4-DB) across cuticular membranes (CM) was studied. Astomatous CM were isolated enzymatically from Stephanotis floribunda Brongn. leaves, and diffusion was measured at 20 degrees C. The alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acids constitute a homologous series with carbon numbers increasing from C12 to C18. Molecular weights increased only moderately from 230.0 (DESU) to 314.5 (DBS), while partition coefficients varied over orders of magnitude from 92 (DESU), to 1213 (DES), to 15,988 (DBSU), to 210,762 (DBS). All the above compounds turned out to be accelerators as they increased 2,4-DB mobility by up to 40-fold with accelerator concentrations in the CM ranging from only 9.2 to 105 g kg(-1). Efficacy (2,4-DB mobility in the presence/mobility in the absence of accelerators) increased with increasing concentrations of accelerators in CM or in reconstituted cuticular waxes. Plotting efficacy vs accelerator concentration in the CM resulted in straight lines, and their slopes increased in the order DBS (0.14), DBSU (0.31), DES (0.51), and DESU (0.85). Hence, DESU was the most powerful accelerator in this series as it increased 2,4-DB mobility in the CM about 6 times more than DBSU. Waxes constitute the major barrier in plant cuticles, and plots of efficacy vs accelerator concentration in Stephanotis wax were also linear, but compared to CM slopes were steeper by factors of 3.20 (DBS), 2.97 (DBSU), 2.70 (DES), and 1.62 (DESU). TBP was similarly effective as DESU, but plots of efficacy vs concentration were not linear, and curves approached a plateau at 60-80 g kg(-1). Australian red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus were cultured in nine 0.02-ha earthen ponds at densities of l/m2, 3/m2 and 5/m2 for 158 d. Average weight at stocking was 3.2 g. All ponds were provided with a combination of hay and corn silage at a rate of 500 kg/ha per month and a commercial crayfish ration fed at 5%, decreasing to 2% of estimated biomass/d during the growing season. Overall survival rate was 72%, and did not differ among treatments. Final yields and average weights varied significantly with stocking density. Red claw averaged 67 g with an average pond yield of 475 kg/ha at l/m2. At 3/m2 and 5/m2, red claw averaged 48 g and 38 g, respectively, and yielded 1,020 kg/ha and 1,422 kg/ha, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract.– Shrimp populations were estimated with volumetric sampling techniques during different phases of hatchery operations. Factors considered which might effect precision of estimates included stage age, density and temperature. Estimates of nauplii were obtained with coefficient of variation values smaller than 3% when nauplii were concentrated in 20-L buckets and smaller than 8% when released in 13,000 L of water in larval rearing tanks. In both cases estimates were of sufficient precision to make management decisions for routine hatchery work. A technique was developed for estimating shrimp populations in larval rearing tanks with coefficient of variation values smaller than 15%. Volumetric sampling of postlarvae older than PL4, in larval rearing tanks was highly variable due to the tendency of shrimp to congregate and attach to tank walls and bottoms. A direct relationship was observed between postlarval density and the precision of population estimates in harvest buckets. Water temperature and postlarval age did not affect precision at the densities and ages studied. These findings have important implications for commercial transactions. Industry standards utilizing coefficient of variation are recommended for larvae and postlarvae population estimates.  相似文献

The positive relationship between fecal CP concentration and diet OM digestibility in cattle, which is based on increasing undigested microbial CP and decreasing fecal OM as OM digestibility increases, may be used as an indirect method for estimating diet OM digestibility from fecal CP concentration. Results of digestibility trials (445 individual observations) conducted at Hohenheim and Braunschweig, Germany, and at Gumpenstein, Austria, were used to study the relationship between CP concentration in feces (x, g/kg OM) and OM digestibility (y, %). The best fit was obtained with the curvilinear relationship y = ai -107.7e(-0.01515 x x), with a1 = 79.76 and a2 = 72.86 (R2 = 0.82; residual SD = 2.7; SE = 0.13), which takes into account the effects of location (i = 1 for Braunschweig and Hohenheim, and i = 2 for Gumpenstein). Dietary CP and crude fat concentration, and DMI had no effect on fecal CP content, whereas crude fiber content, proportion of concentrate in the diet, and forage type significantly affected CP concentration in feces; however, the magnitude of these effects was less than 2 percentage units, and the direction of the effect of proportion of concentrate in the diet was not uniform. The curvilinear relationship between fecal CP concentration (observed range, 100 to 300 g/kg of OM) and diet OM digestibility (observed range = 57 to 80%) may be used to estimate diet OM digestibility, particularly for field trials, as it requires no feed samples and does not physically restrict the animal.  相似文献
