Initial images of Venus's south pole by the Venus Express mission have shown the presence of a bright, highly variable vortex, similar to that at the planet's north pole. Using high-resolution infrared measurements of polar winds from the Venus Express Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) instrument, we show the vortex to have a constantly varying internal structure, with a center of rotation displaced from the geographic south pole by ~3 degrees of latitude and that drifts around the pole with a period of 5 to 10 Earth days. This is indicative of a nonsymmetric and varying precession of the polar atmospheric circulation with respect to the planetary axis. 相似文献

Broad-band (ultraviolet to near-infrared) observations of the intense gamma ray burst GRB 990123 started approximately 8.5 hours after the event and continued until 18 February 1999. When combined with other data, in particular from the Robotic Telescope and Transient Source Experiment (ROTSE) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), evidence emerges for a smoothly declining light curve, suggesting some color dependence that could be related to a cooling break passing the ultraviolet-optical band at about 1 day after the high-energy event. The steeper decline rate seen after 1.5 to 2 days may be evidence for a collimated jet pointing toward the observer. 相似文献

Summary A reliable and standard method was established for micropropagation of the A70-34 selected genotype of lecerne (Medicago sativa L., genotype A70-34), aimed at reducing contamination problems, seasonal and phenological influences on regeneration and phytosanitary problems of the mother plants, while maintaining the regenerative potential for somatic embryogenesis of the plant tissues. Mother plants were routinely maintained for several subcultures and somatic embryogenesis was regularly obtained from the subcultured explants. Proliferation, rooting and embryogenetic ability of plants cultured for 30 days was greater than those cultured for 20 days. The regenerative potential of tissues from different organs and of triturated and intact whole plants was also tested. Petioles were confirmed as the best source for embryogenesis as far as efficiency and repeatability were concerned, even though regeneration from other explant types was also achieved. Production of somatic embryos through mechanical trituration of the in vitro cultured plants was obtained; the regeneration ability of the triturated plants was greater than that observed in the intact plants. 相似文献

SummaryCanopy size control is one of the major purposes of summer pruning. However, reducing canopy size might also result in less light interception, consequently decreasing canopy photosynthetic efficiency and carbohydrate production, which might lead to the imbalance of carbohydrate supply and fruit demand. To document the effectiveness of summer pruning on canopy control and the impact on canopy gas exchange, pruning treatments at four levels of intensity (unpruned, light, moderate, and severe) were carried out on mature ‘Empire’/M.9 slender spindle apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.) on 30 July 1998 and 4 August 1999. Changes in canopy leaf area after summer pruning were estimated. Canopy net carbon exchange rate (NCER) and canopy transpiration before and after summer pruning were monitored. Canopy growth was suppressed by summer pruning and the post-pruning regrowth was insignificant. Canopy NCER was reduced in proportion to the amount of leaf area removed by summer pruning. The result suggests that commercial pruning intensity similar to the moderate to severe treatments in this study could cause a significant reduction in canopy NCER and carbohydrate production. In addition, canopy transpiration was reduced in proportion to pruning intensity. Lower water consumption and improved water status during the growing season after summer pruning might benefit fruit growth and relieve the potential detriment due to carbohydrate shortage. 相似文献

Vine water use was measured in a Vitis vinifera cv. Riesling vineyard located in New York. Vines were fully irrigated and were trained via vertical shoot positioning giving
a narrow curtain intercepting about 30% of the incident light during the sunlight hours. Vine water use was estimated on six
vines by sap flow gauges directly calibrated with whole canopy transpiration measurements. The regression analysis between
estimates of transpiration showed that there were large differences between vines in the calibration values obtained. Sap
flow monitoring started late in June, about 2 weeks after bloom, when the canopy already filled the trellis system, and continued
until October. Results showed that vine water use during most of the summer days was between 1.0 and 2.0 mm day−1, with peak values around 2.5 mm. The basal (e.g. vine transpiration/reference evapotranspiration) crop coefficient (K
cb) varied somewhat between days, but it was quite stable during the whole season. Averaged over the entire experimental period,
the K
cb was 0.49. Some of the day-to-day variation in the K
cb was negatively related with daily average air vapour pressure deficit. This suggests that reference evapotranspiration models

The Visible, InfraRed, and Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on Rosetta obtained hyperspectral images, spectral reflectance maps, and temperature maps of the asteroid 21 Lutetia. No absorption features, of either silicates or hydrated minerals, have been detected across the observed area in the spectral range from 0.4 to 3.5 micrometers. The surface temperature reaches a maximum value of 245 kelvin and correlates well with topographic features. The thermal inertia is in the range from 20 to 30 joules meter(-2) kelvin(-1) second(-0.5), comparable to a lunarlike powdery regolith. Spectral signatures of surface alteration, resulting from space weathering, seem to be missing. Lutetia is likely a remnant of the primordial planetesimal population, unaltered by differentiation processes and composed of chondritic materials of enstatitic or carbonaceous origin, dominated by iron-poor minerals that have not suffered aqueous alteration. 相似文献

An optical transient within the error box of the gamma ray burst GRB 970508 was imaged 4 hours after the event. It displayed a strong ultraviolet excess, and reached maximum brightness 2 days later. The optical spectra did not show any emission lines, and no variations on time scales of minutes were observed for 1 hour during the decline phase. According to the fireball and afterglow models, the intensity should rise monotonically before the observed optical maximum, but the data indicate that another physical mechanism may be responsible for the constant phase seen during the first hours after the burst. 相似文献
