A stochastic three-dimensional model for the behaviour of free water in wood, which was described in Part I, is used for the simulation and analysis of some further features of wood drying. The kiln brown stain mechanism is studied and the connection to the condition of the wood surface is pointed out. Several drying rate questions and related aspects are analysed and compared with experimental results. Finally the risk of surface checking in an early stage of sapwood drying is shown theoretically.  相似文献

Freshwater prawn production in India that includes farming and wild capture of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and the monsoon river prawn, M. malcolmsonii has increased steadily since 1999 reaching a peak output of 42 780 t in 2005, but then declined to 6568 t in 2009–2010. Stunted growth and diseases in ponds because of poor seed quality and the broodstock which had been inbred over several generations; pond water quality issues; and increased cost of production on account of feed, labour and the mandatory certification requirements are suggested to be some of the factors leading to the production declines. While majority of the output occurs in Andhra Pradesh, single crop paddy–prawn production systems in the low‐lying fields of Kerala have helped gradual transformation to a sustainable, organic mode of farming of both rice and prawns, suitable for other states of India. Although the trends by June 2011 indicate that the sector is set to a revival, future prospects of freshwater prawn farming in India will also depend on the expansion of whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei that was introduced recently in India and provided a more profitable opportunity for farming.  相似文献

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis exerts a large range of effects on metabolism, the immune system, inflammatory processes, and brain functions. Together with the sympathetic nervous system, it is also the most important stress-responsive neuroendocrine system. Both systems influence production traits, carcass composition, and meat quality. The HPA axis may be a critical target for genetic selection of more robust animals. Indeed, numerous studies in various species have demonstrated the importance of genetic factors in shaping the individual HPA axis phenotype, and genetic polymorphism can be found at each level of the axis, including hormone production by the adrenal cortices under stimulation by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), hormone bioavailability, or receptor and postreceptor mechanisms. The aim of the present experiment was to extend these findings to the brain neurochemical systems involved in stress responses. To this end, a number of candidate genes were sequenced for molecular polymorphisms and their association was studied with stress neuroendocrine and production traits in a genetically diverse population consisting of 100 female pigs from an advanced intercross (F10-F12) between 2 highly divergent breeds, Large White (LW) and Meishan (MS). The LW breed has a high production potential for lean meat and a low HPA axis activity, and the MS breed has low growth rate, fat carcasses—but large litters of highly viable piglets—and a high HPA axis activity. Candidate genes were chosen in the catecholaminergic and serotonergic pathways, in the pituitary control of cortisol production, among genes previously demonstrated to be differentially expressed in ACTH-stimulated adrenal glands from LW and MS pigs, and in cortisol receptors. Sixty new polymorphisms were found. The association study with carcass and meat quality traits and with endocrine traits showed a number of significant results, such as monoamine oxidase (MAOA) polymorphisms with growth rate (P = 0.01); lean content and intramuscular fat (P < 0.01), which are the most important traits for carcass value; dopamine receptor D3 (DRD3) with carcass composition (P < 0.05); and vasopressin receptor 1B (AVPR1B) with meat quality traits (P ≤ 0.05). The effect of these polymorphisms on neuroendocrine parameters (eg DRD3 and HPA axis or AVPR1B and catecholamines) indicates information regarding their biological mechanism of action.  相似文献

Liquid flow in dried wood is complicated to study, since wood is a nonhomogeneous, hygroscopic-porous, anisotropic material. However, liquid flow is important to understand, since it has an influence on the durability of wood and on such processes like impregnation, drying, surface treatment, etc. In this study, simulations of liquid water absorption in wood as a fibre network, percolation, were compared with experimental water absorption in the longitudinal direction in spruce timber. With CT scanning, water distribution during liquid flow can be shown visually and measured by image processing. Liquid water absorption in end grain of spruce was measured with CT scanning after 1, 3, 7 and 14?days of liquid water absorption and shown as moisture content (MC) profiles in heartwood and sapwood. It was found that the amount of water absorbed could be expressed as a linear function of the square root of time. The slopes of the lines differed between sapwood and heartwood and also varied depending on the growth condition of the trees. The simulations according to the percolation method show generally good agreement with the measured results for sapwood.  相似文献

Change in environmental salinity level is a major limiting factor for the aquaculture productivity because it imposes severe stress on organisms that in turn retards growth. The orange mud crab (Scylla olivacea) is an important coastal aquaculture species (farming is practised in 10‰–20‰ salinity levels) in Bangladesh. The present study was conducted to investigate the changes in growth, O2 consumption and mRNA expression levels of five selected genes in the orange mud crab (S. olivacea) exposed to three different experimental salinity levels (0‰, 10‰ and 20‰) for three months. Crabs reared at 10‰ and 20‰, showed significantly higher (p < .05) growth performance and expression of growth regulatory genes (Actin and α‐amylase). The highest levels (p < .05) of O2 consumption and expression of ion regulatory genes (Na+‐K+‐ATPase, V‐type H+‐ATPase and Diuretic Hormone) were obtained at 0‰. Moderate levels of growth and expression of selected candidate genes were observed at 10‰ treatment while the highest levels of growth and gene expression were obtained at 20‰ (control salinity). Strong interactions were observed between growth performance and expression of growth genes (R2 = 0.81–0.91), and rate of O2 consumption and expression of ion regulatory genes (R2 = 0.83–0.93), implying that the selected genes are important candidates for growth and ionic balance in S. olivacea. Growth performance was found to be very low at 0‰ initially, after 30 days crabs showed better growth performance at this salinity level. It is thus inferred that orange mud crab individuals might require 3–5 days for acclimation to salinity stress but it can take at least 30 days for acclimation to regular growth. Results indicate that with proper acclimation, the orange mud crab (Scylla olivacea) can be farmed at low salinity conditions and possibly in freshwater condition.  相似文献

All‐male monosex culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) has emerged as a popular practice in India, especially in the state of Andhra Pradesh. A study was conducted to compare the economics of all‐male, mixed and all‐female culture in 15 adjacent, rectangular ponds of 4000 m2 each by stocking juveniles previously reared in a nursery for 60 days. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with three treatments; T1 (all male), T2 (mixed) and T3 (all female), and five replicates for a period of 5 months after the nursery phase. Statistical analysis showed highly significant (P<0.01) differences among the three types of culture. The cost of production was estimated and the economic feasibility of the culture methods was evaluated by cost‐return and partial budgeting analysis. The average weight, productivity and specific growth rate were the highest for all male culture, being 80.92±2.41 g, 1532 kg ha?1 and 1.97±0.02 respectively. All‐female culture registered significantly higher survival (89.16±0.77%) and the best apparent feed conversion ratio of 1.26±0.02. The economic analysis revealed that all‐male monosex culture of M. rosenbergii was 63.13% and 60.20% more profitable than mixed and all‐female cultures respectively.  相似文献

The present work was carried out with a view of determining the chilling rates for cold anaesthetization and live storage of Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) in chilled sawdust, for live transportation. Three chilling rates of 1.38 ± 0.16 °C h?1 within 8 h (slow), 2.76 ± 0.32 °C h?1 within 4 h (moderate) and 5.52 ± 0.64 °C h?1 within 2 h (fast) were tested to cold anaesthetize 144 farm‐raised P. monodon (22–25 g) in each chilling rate at 15 g L?1 salinity, from 25 °C down to 14 ± 1 °C in plastic net boxes kept in a refrigerated chilling tank provided with aeration. Eight cold‐anaesthetized shrimps subjected to each chilling rate were packed in an insulated cardboard box (triplicate) between two layers of moist and chilled (2–3 °C) sawdust, and kept inside a chilled storage cabinet at 14 ± 1 °C for durations of 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 h. Survival was determined by revitalizing the shrimps in aerated water with an initial temperature of 20 °C, which was raised to 28 ± 1 °C at 2.7 °C h?1 within 3 h. Statistically valid, safe durations for obtaining 100% survival were 22.9 ± 1.1, 19.1 ± 0.4 and 14.6 ± 1.1 h, using probit analysis at the slow, moderate and fast chilling rates respectively. The weight loss (1.5–8.8%) due to cold anaesthetization and subsequent revitalization of the packed shrimp was insignificant. Sensory evaluation showed significant improvement in general appearance, and also in colour as well as in flavour of the meat when compared with that of the freshly harvested dead shrimps. The texture as well as odour of the raw and cooked meat between treated and untreated shrimps was unaffected. The effects of chilling rates and shipping durations on sensory quality were insignificant. One hundred per cent survival was obtained for 24, 20 and 16 h for the slow, moderate and fast chilling rates respectively. Percentage survival of the shrimps at different durations was significantly different among the chilling rates, but pair‐wise comparison revealed that the slow and moderate chilling rates were identical. Hence, the moderate chilling rate, which took only 4 h, can be considered the optimum, though the choice of different chilling rates depends on the duration of live storage desired.  相似文献

Three cooling rates of 1.26±0.09°C h?1 within 8 h (slow, T1), 2.52±0.18°C h?1 within 4 h (moderate, T2) and 5.04±0.36°C h?1 within 2 h (fast, T3) were tested to cold‐anaesthetize farm raised Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) (45–52 g) in each case from 25°C down to 15±1°C in a refrigerated chilling tank, provided with aeration. The cold‐anaesthetized prawns subjected to each chilling rate were packed in an insulated cardboard box (triplicate) between two layers of moist and chilled (2–3°C) sawdust, and kept inside a chilled storage cabinet at 15±1°C, for set durations of 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 h. Survival was determined by revitalizing the prawns in aerated water with an initial temperature of 20°C, which was raised to 29±1°C within 3 h. The experiment was repeated using berried females acclimated to brackishwater of 12 g L?1 salinity and the percentage survival recorded after live storage for durations ranging from 6 to 24 h at intervals of 3 h. Statistically valid safe durations for obtaining 100% survival of the cold anaesthetized and live stored prawns were determined using probit analysis at the three chilling rates tested, and were found to be 7.39, 6.98 and 4.54 h in the case of adult prawns, and 7.87, 8.17 and 6.43 h for berried females for T1, T2 and T3 respectively. For practical purposes, the durations that yielded 95% survival rates were computed to be 16.47, 12.14 and 8.35 h in the case of adult prawns and 18.49, 19.02 and 11.11 h for berried females for T1, T2, and T3 respectively. The berried prawns revitalized after live storage were incubated in tanks and the zoea larvae reared up to postlarvae (PL‐5), and compared against a control. No significant difference was found in larval hatch fecundity, survival rate and the production of PL L?1 between the treatment and control, indicating that the method of cold anaesthetization and live storage of berried prawns could be used for successful transportation of broodstock.  相似文献

Corn mint ( Mentha arvensis ) provides a good source of natural phenols such as flavone glycosides and caffeic acid derivatives, which may have prophylactic properties against inflammations. This study investigated whether corn mint extract would be beneficial against a universal respiratory tract pathogen, Chlamydia pneumoniae , infection. The extract inhibited the growth of C. pneumoniae CWL-029 in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition was confirmed against a clinical isolate K7. The phenolic composition of the extract was analyzed by UPLC-ESI/Q-TOF/MS, the main components being linarin and rosmarinic acid. These compounds were active in vitro against C. pneumoniae. Linarin completely inhibited the growth at 100 μM. Inbred C57BL/6J mice were inoculated with C. pneumoniae K7. M. arvensis extract was given intraperitoneally once daily for 3 days prior to inoculation and continued for 10 days postinfection. The extract was able to diminish the inflammatory parameters related to C. pneumoniae infection and significantly (p = 0.019) lowered the number of C. pneumoniae genome equivalents detected by PCR at biologically relevant amounts.  相似文献
