Purpose

Riparian zone contamination is a growing problem for several European catchments due to high anthropogenic pressures. This study investigates As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the Sava River riparian zone, characterized by wide agricultural areas, various geological substrates, and different types of industrial pollution. The accumulation and mobility of these elements were studied because they are listed as priority substances in the Water Framework Directive and environmental objectives for surface waters.

Materials and methods

Sampling was performed during the sampling campaign of the EU 7th FW-funded GLOBAQUA project in September 2015 during a low-water event. Soil samples were collected along the Sava River at 12 selected sampling sites, from a depth of 0–30 cm, at a distance of 10–15 m from the river bank. The extent of pollution was estimated by determining total and readily soluble element concentrations in the soils. Potential ecological risk and the source of the selected elements in the soils was determined using the enrichment factor (EF), potential ecological risk index (RI), and statistical methods such as the principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA).

Results and discussion

This study showed that concentrations of the selected elements increase along the Sava. In terms of origin, PCA and MLRA indicated that Cr and Ni in soils are predominantly lithogenic, while As, Cd, Pb, and Zn are both lithogenic and anthropogenic (ore deposits, industry, and agriculture). PCA singled out Cu since its origin in soil is most probably from specific point-source pollution. EF was generally minor to moderate for most of the examined elements, apart from Cu, for which the EF was significant at one sampling site. Overall ecological risk (RI) fell within the low-risk category for most sites, apart from Belgrade sampling site (BEO), where high total Cd content affected individual and overall ecological risk indicators, indicating Cd could represent a considerable ecological risk for the downstream riparian zone.

Conclusions

At downstream sites, there was a noticeable increase in PTE content, with Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn exceeding the proposed threshold values for European soils, indicating rising contamination in riparian soils. In terms of the ecological risk, only Cd could pose a potential ecological threat for the downstream riparian zone.

The interrelationships between physicochemical properties, absorption and potency of 2-desoxoparaherquamide and five analogs, representing a new anthelmintic class, were evaluated in in vitro and in vivo assays. At pH 7.5, rates of drug absorption by the gastrointestinal nematode Haemonchus contortus and jird small intestine, parameterized by the permeability coefficient, P(e), ranged from 1.2-2.4 x 10(-4) cm/min (nematode) to 2.5-5.5 x 10(-3) cm/min (jird). In the jird intestine, absorption was pH-dependent, with P(e) at pH 7.5 being twice that at pH 4.5, reflecting the negative influence of protonation on transport of these weakly basic molecules. Each compound rapidly paralyzed H. contortus during in vitro exposure to therapeutically relevant concentrations (1-10 microm). The kinetics of drug action on motility in vivo mirrored their in vitro effects; motility concentrations were reduced in nematodes collected from jird stomach 3 h following oral drug dosing, by which time > or =50% clearance of the parasites had occurred. The nematode/medium partition coefficient K ranged from 10.1 to 16.1, consistent with the lipophilic nature of the compounds. The time required to reduce motility in vitro by 50% (t50*) and P(e) were used to determine C(n)*, the concentration of drug in the nematode at t50*, as an indicator of intrinsic potency. In the jird, the apparent potencies of the compounds were insensitive to route of administration (i.e. oral = i.v. = i.p. = i.m.) for H. contortus and two other gastrointestinal nematodes, Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus colubriformis; topical administration, however, required three to 10-fold higher doses for equivalent efficacy.  相似文献

Purpose

River ecosystems are under pressure from several different stressors. Among these, inorganic pollutants contribute to multiple stressor situations and the overall degradation of the ecological status of the aquatic environments. The main sources of pollution include different industrial activities, untreated effluents from municipal waste waters and intensive agriculture. In the present study, water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments of the Sava River were studied in order to assess the pollution status of this river system.

Materials and methods

Sampling was performed during the first sampling campaign of the EU 7th FW funded GLOBAQUA project in September 2014, at 18 selected sampling sites along the Sava River. In 2014, floods predominated from spring to fall. Water samples were collected to determine the total element concentrations, the dissolved (0.45 μm) fraction and element concentrations in SPM. In order to assure comparative results with other river basins, the fraction below 63 μm was analysed in sediments. The extent of pollution was estimated by determination of the total element concentrations and by the identification of the most hazardous highly mobile element fractions (extraction 0.11 mol L?1 acetic acid) and anthropogenic inputs of elements to sediments (normalization to aluminium (Al) concentration). Concentrations of selected elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Results and discussion

Since during sampling campaign the water level was extremely high, water samples contained high amounts of SPM (in general between 80 and 100 mg L?1). The data of chemical analysis revealed that concentrations of elements in water, SPM and sediments in general increase along the Sava River from its origin to the confluence with the Danube River. Elevated concentrations of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) in SPM and sediments were observed at industrially exposed sites. Concentrations of Cr and Ni in sediments were up to 320 and 250 mg kg?1, respectively. Nevertheless, these elements were present in sparingly soluble forms and hence did not represent an environmental threat. Phosphorus (P) was found in elevated concentrations (up to 1500 mg kg?1) at regions with intensive agricultural activities and cities with dense population.

Conclusions

With respect to element concentrations, the pollution of the Sava River is similar to other moderately polluted European rivers. The data from the present study are beneficial for the water management authorities and can contribute to sustainable utilization, management and protection of the Sava River water resources.

Cocoa butter is the major commercial product from seeds of Theobroma cacao (cacao). However, most cacao breeding programs have only considered as selection criteria total seed yield per plant and disease resistance. Progress in cocoa butter yield might be possible if variability for fat content exists and its associations with the other production components are established. The average fat content in dry unfermented seeds for 490 accessions of the Centro de Pesquisa do Cacau germplasm collection in Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil was 53.2%, ranging from 45.4% in CC 57 to 60.3% in NA 312. Fat content averaged over series indicated that genotypes originally collected in the Upper Amazonian region had higher fat levels, while the Trinitario-Criollo and Bahian genotypes tended to have lower fat content. When considering total fat yield plant-1 an opposite trend arose with the series with low fat content having the highest total fat yield. The correlation between fat content and fat yield plant-1 was not significant, while there was a significant negative correlation between dry seed yield plant-1 and fat content. Despite the significant negative association between fat content and dry seed yield plant-1, the correlation coefficient was rather low, and genotypes could be identified with both high fat content and dry seed yield. A significant pollen effect on fat content was observed based on a complete diallel crossing scheme between three genotypes with high and three with low levels. The average fat content values in progenies were similar to the average of the parents, and the segregation range transgressed the distribution of the parents. Physiological methods, especially the use of isotopes of N, have allowed for the detailed characterizations of the several putative transport systems for nitrate and ammonium in roots of higher plants. In the last decade, the cloning of genes that appear to encode both high- and low-affinity transporters represent major advances, as well as substantiating the inferences based on earlier physiological methods. Nevertheless, the unexpected plethora of genes that have been identified now presents even greater challenges, to resolve their individual functions and to attempt to place these functions in a whole plant/environmental context.  相似文献

The metabolism of ceftiofur in bovine kidney, liver, muscle and lung, and the effects of the presence of cystine and glutathione in the media were evaluated using S-9 and microsomal tissue fractions. Conversion of ceftiofur to desfuroylceftiofur (DFC) was catalyzed by an esterase which was most active in kidney, followed by liver. It was not very active in muscle and lung. After DFC was liberated, it rapidly bound primarily to tissue proteins (>56%), and was also conjugated to cysteine and glutathione. Production of DFC-cysteine by disulfide exchange of DFC with cystine and production of DFC-glutathione by conjugation of DFC to glutathione occurred in buffer if glutathione and cystine were present in the medium. These conjugations were also observed in incubations with tissue fractions, indicating that they were not inhibited by the tissues endogenous molecules. In addition, the metabolism of DFC-glutathione to DFC-cysteine was observed when tissue proteins were present. The metabolism of DFC-glutathione to DFC-cysteine was faster in kidney than in liver. Metabolites devoid of an intact β-lactam ring were not observed in these in vitro studies.  相似文献
