The sulphonylurea structures and their relationships with the 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidinesulphonamides are first discussed. Three novel examples of heterocyclic sulphonamides, pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-2-sulphonamides, thiazolo[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-2-sulphonamides and 1,2,4-triazole-3-sulphonamides are highlighted and their synthesis, biological activity and soil behaviour are described.  相似文献

Macroscopic and microscopic features of natural and experimental Flexibacter maritimus infection, and epidemiological aspects of the disease, have been reported in a number of species of fish in Tasmanian aquaculture including Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), greenback flounder, Rhombosolea tapirina Günther, and striped trumpeter, Latris lineata (Bloch & Schneider). There is a great deal of consistency in the pathology in salmonids and non-salmonid species, with erosive lesions of external surfaces being the most prominent clinical sign. Experimentally induced disease of salmonids and flounder is similar to natural infection. Mature lesions show dermal and gill erosion, with dermal bacterial invasion into the dense connective tissue and occasionally underlying musculature, but a remarkable lack of inflammatory response. The earliest lesions show consistent fragmentation and degeneration of the epithelium, with infiltration of amorphous protein-like materials and occasionally intra-epithelial cellular inflammatory cells, plus congestion and haemorrhage of the superficial dermis, but without visible bacteria in standard sections. Variable scale loss, oedema and a low level of inflammation in scale pockets, plus variable small adherent bacterial mats, are evident before full epithelial erosion.  相似文献

Bacteria are renowned for their ability to tolerate and adapt to a wide range of adverse environmental conditions. The primary mechanism that facilitates these adaptations is thought to be the capacity to form and maintain biofilms. Within a biofilm, bacteria become attached to a surface where they exist in complex communities which are able to interact with each other through intracellular communication and thus rapidly adapt to changing environments. The organisms within biofilms are notorious for their resistance towards the host immune response and antibacterial agents compared to their free-living planktonic counterparts. Consequently, biofilms are of significant importance to both clinical and veterinary science. However, although bacterial infections are widely reported in animals their association with biofilms is rarely discussed. The aim of this review is to look at the characteristics of biofilm infections in humans and to relate this knowledge to veterinary science in order to assess their relevance in this area.  相似文献

Measuring the specific surface area (SSA) of soils that contain much organic matter (OM) is problematic. The adsorption of p-nitrophenol (pNP) from xylene at room temperature yielded realistic values for the SSA of a wide range of clays, oxides and subsoils. Here we have extended the same measurement to some topsoils with varied OM content, texture and clay mineral composition. Specifically, we have compared the surface areas measured by adsorption of N2, and, applying the BET equation, with the values obtained by adsorption of pNP, before and after treatment of the samples with hydrogen peroxide. In all instances, the removal by H2O2 of organic matter – albeit in part only – led to a marked increase in the SSAs measured by nitrogen because of the exposure of micropores previously blocked or covered by OM. The surface areas measured by pNP were appreciably larger than those obtained by the standard BET equation, and showed little change after removal of organic matter. However, the surface area of two smectite-rich samples measured by pNP increased substantially after peroxidation, presumably because smectite crystals decomposed during treatment with H2O2. The results suggest that, under the experimental conditions used, pNP could diffuse without hindrance into and through organic matter, enabling it to adsorb on to micropore surfaces within clay aggregates (domains). In keeping with this suggestion, the relation between the surface areas measured by pNP and the corresponding values calculated from the clay and OM contents, and clay mineral composition, of the soils was close to 1:1. An even stronger relation was observed between the measured and calculated values for cation exchange capacity.  相似文献

Blueberry spanworm (Itame argillacearia Packard) is a key insect defoliator of wild blueberry, an important crop in north-eastern North America. We evaluated the susceptibility of blueberry spanworm to several reduced-risk insecticides in laboratory and field experiments. Two populations from two Canadian provinces were studied in the laboratory. Both were highly susceptible to flubendiamide, spinetoram and deltamethrin, although there were inter-population differences, and flubendiamide was slower acting. Flubendiamide, spinosad, spinetoram, and methoxyfenozide demonstrated good suppression of economically damaging populations of blueberry spanworm larvae in the field.  相似文献

A range of improved pasture herbage feed allowances (1 to 5 kg dry matter/head/day) were offered to young sheep, grazing underPinus radiata grown at 0, 50, 100 and 200 stems per hectare. Six trials were conducted, each for 30 days duration between spring 1986 and autumn 1988, at tree age 13–15 years. Mean liveweight gain over all trials for 0 (open pasture), 50, 100 and 200 stems per hectare were 170, 155, 136 and 94 g/sheep/day, respectively. Liveweight gain increased curvilinearly with increasing pasture allowance at all tree stockings and tended to level off above 3 kg green dry matter/head/day. Green matter pasture in vitro digestibility of the green pasture fraction changed little with increasing tree stocking despite changes in pasture composition. Pine needle accumulation under the higher tree stockings depressed the quality of the total feed on offer. Livestock performance under low tree stocking agroforestry regimes can be satisfactory, providing pasture management encourages fresh nutritious feed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To present current breast-feeding rates for Pacific infants resident in New Zealand. Reasons for the introduction of complementary liquid foods were also explored. DESIGN: A longitudinal study using hospital discharge summary records and maternal home interviews undertaken at 6 weeks, 12 and 24 months postpartum. Turnbull's non-parametric survival analysis was used to model exclusive breast-feeding rates. SETTING: Auckland, New Zealand. RESULTS: The cohort comprised 1376 infants at 6 weeks, 1223 infants at 12 months and 1142 infants at 24 months. Exclusive breast-feeding rates at hospital discharge, 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months postpartum were 84% (95% confidence interval (CI): 80-88%), 49% (95% CI: 43-55%), 37% (95% CI: 32-42%) and 9% (95% CI: 7-11%), respectively. Significant ethnic difference existed, with Samoan mothers having higher exclusive breast-feeding rates than Tongan mothers (P = 0.002). The percentage of infants receiving any breast milk at hospital discharge, 6 weeks, 12 and 24 months was 96% (95% CI: 94-97%), 95% (95% CI: 94-96%), 31% (95% CI: 28-34%) and 15% (95% CI: 13-17%), respectively. Again ethnic differences emerged. Common reasons cited for discontinuation of exclusive breast-feeding included uncertainty of breast milk supply (56%), problems with breasts (30%) and difficulties breast-feeding in work or educational environments (26%). However, 691 (50%) mothers sought no advice about their breast-feeding concerns within the first six weeks of life. CONCLUSIONS: Exclusive breast-feeding rates for Pacific infants are ethnically heterogeneous, have declined since the 1990s and fall short of the World Health Organization recommendations. The principal reasons cited for exclusive breast-feeding discontinuation echo those reported over a decade ago.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Protection of cattle from alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AlHV-1)-induced malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) has been described previously, using an attenuated virus vaccine in an unlicensed adjuvant. The vaccine was hypothesised to induce a protective barrier of virus-neutralising antibody in the oro-nasal region, supported by the observation of high titre neutralising antibodies in nasal secretions of protected animals. Here we describe further analysis of this vaccine strategy, studying the effectiveness of the vaccine formulated with a licensed adjuvant; the duration of immunity induced; and the virus-specific antibody responses in plasma and nasal secretions. The results presented here show that the attenuated AlHV-1 vaccine in a licensed adjuvant protected cattle from fatal intranasal challenge with pathogenic AlHV-1 at three or six months. In addition, animals protected from MCF had significantly higher initial anti-viral antibody titres than animals that succumbed to disease; and these antibody titres remained relatively stable after challenge, while titres in vaccinated animals with MCF increased significantly prior to the onset of clinical disease. These data support the view that a mucosal barrier of neutralising antibody blocks infection of vaccinated animals and suggests that the magnitude of the initial response may correlate with long-term protection. Interestingly, the high titre virus-neutralising antibody responses seen in animals that succumbed to MCF after vaccination were not protective.  相似文献

The Fraxinus genus consists of ca. 65 deciduous, rarely evergreen trees found mainly throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Fraxinus species possess the aesthetic characteristics desired of urban trees (autumn colour, attractive bark and flowers); however, no scientifically based tolerance ranking exists for many genotypes within this genera. Aims of this study were to identify whether differences in drought tolerance exist within the Fraxinus genus and thereby provide information as to their usefulness for planting in urban landscapes where water stress poses a threat to transplant survival. At the cessation of a 2-week drought stress and subsequent recovery period, marked differences in drought tolerance among genotypes were distinguished based on net photosynthesis, leaf chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll concentration. In addition, measurement of light absorbance, light trapping, electron transport and dissipation fluxes per leaf cross section of photosystem II at the cessation of the drought period provided an insight into mechanisms of drought damage and resilience among the genotypes tested. The results of this investigation indicate that F. excelsior ‘Aurea Pendula’, F. nigra Marsh., F. ornus L., F. angustifolia ‘Raywood’, F. excelsior L. and F. excelsior ‘Jaspidea’ should be considered for urban planting sites, where water supply is limited. Care should be taken when planting F. americana L., F. americana ‘Autumn Purple’ and F. velutina Torr., into urban environments as results indicated these species are sensitive to drought.  相似文献

An experiment was designed to assess the mineral status of 60 Angus yearling beef steers grazing bahiagrass pastures fertilized with large amounts of biosolids from three sources: Baltimore, MD; Tampa, FL; and Largo, FL. Biosolids were classified as exceptional quality and thus had no regulatory restrictions on loading rate. They differed primarily in concentration of Mo (12 to 56 mg/kg of DM). Residual treatments (biosolids applied only the previous year) for Baltimore biosolids were applied at 22.4 and 44.8 t/ha, and Tampa biosolids were either 16.8 or 33.6 t/ ha. The reapplied treatments (applied in consecutive years) for both Baltimore and Tampa sludges were applied at 22.4, 44.8, 16.8 , and 33.6 t/ha, respectively. The two Largo biosolids treatments were either 56 or 112 t/ha and were applied only in the 2nd yr. Liver biopsies and blood samples were collected on d 1, 95, and 180. Liver and plasma were analyzed for minerals and blood was analyzed for hemoglobin, hematocrit, and superoxide dismutase of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Experimental animals were generally adequate in macromineral status and Co, Fe, and Mn throughout the experiment. Copper deficiency was evident based on the clinical signs of hair coat discoloration, very low plasma Cu at d 95, and the continuous decline in liver Cu over 180 d. A sharp decline in plasma Cu was observed for all treatments from d 1 to 95, after which Cu concentrations rebounded to normal concentrations (> 0.65 microg/mL) by d 180. Liver Mo was well below concentrations indicating toxicity (> 5.0 mg/kg). The steep decline in liver Cu over the first 95 d reflects the dietary Cu deficiency and the possibility of high forage S (0.26 to 0.52%) interfering with Cu metabolism. Biosolids application to bahiagrass pastures was not detrimental to mineral status except for declining Cu stores; however, the controls likewise declined, but to a lesser degree.  相似文献
