Structure—activity relationships in pyrethroid esters derived from substituted 2-phenoxy-3-methylbutanoic acids

Non-cyclopropane pyrethroid esters of different substituted 2-phenoxy-3-methylbutanoic acids have been synthesised using the three alcohols—3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol, α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol and 3, 4-methylene-dioxybenzyl alcohol. Among the 35 esters synthesised and tested against Culex quinquefasciatus Say, the Bancroftian filariasis vector, for both larvicidal and adulticidal activities, α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2-(4-fluorophenoxy)-3-methylbu-tanoate, with an LC₅₀ value of 2.5 × 10^?3 mg litre^?1 for larvicidal activity, and α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl-2-(4-chlorophenoxy)-3-methylbutanoate, with an LD₅₀ value of 30 times; 10^?4 ug insect^?1 for adulticidal activity, were found to be as effective as fenvalerate, a well-known non-cyclopropane pyrethroid ester. Structure-activity studies showed that the insecticidal activity is dependent on the nature and position of the substituent in the phenyl ring of the acid moiety and also on the type of alcohol moiety.     

Neoplastic pleocytosis in a dog with metastatic mammary carcinoma and meningeal carcinomatosis

Abstract: A 12‐year‐old female spayed Labrador Retriever was presented with a history of seizures and abnormal vocalization. Approximately 1 year before presentation, multiple mammary cysts had been surgically excised. A mammary mass was noted on physical examination, and 2 separate parenchymal brain lesions were found on imaging studies. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected from the cisterna magna was analyzed, and abnormalities included moderate pleocytosis with atypical discrete round cells that occasionally formed loose clusters. The dog was euthanized, and on necropsy a primary solid mammary carcinoma was identified as well as multiple metastatic foci in the brain with diffuse meningeal involvement. The cells in the CSF had a morphologic appearance similar to the cells in the primary mammary tumor and in the metastatic tumors in the brain. On immunostaining, cells from the primary mammary tumor, the brain tumors, and the CSF expressed cytokeratin. The CSF cells did not express CD18, CD3, or CD79a. A final diagnosis of mammary carcinoma with brain metastasis and meningeal carcinomatosis was made.     

Characterization of β-catenin expression in canine osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most frequently occurring malignant primary bone tumour in dogs and children and arises from cells of the osteoblast lineage. Inappropriate Wnt signalling activity has been implicated in human OSA. Altered expression of β-catenin, an integral member of the Wnt signalling pathway, has been associated with numerous human cancers, including OSA. In this study, 30 of the 37 primary canine OSA tissues and 2 of the 3 metastatic OSAs were positive for β-catenin expression as determined by immunohistochemistry, whereas 2 normal bones stained negative for β-catenin. No mutations were identified in exon 3 of β-catenin in the three OSA cases in which DNA sequencing was performed. Finally, there was no relationship between β-catenin expression and overall survival time or disease-free interval. Our results indicate β-catenin is frequently expressed within the cytoplasm of neoplastic cells in canine OSA but contains no detectable mutations in exon 3, similar to human OSA.     

Dry Electrostatic Spray Coated Towpregs for Thermoplastic Composites

Though the processing steps for the manufacture of thermoplastic composites present little difficulty when compared to those for thermoset composites, it is not cost effective as a result of difficulty in accomplishing thorough infusion of resin into fibers and fibrous structures. Tremendously high viscosity for thermoplastic resin leads to numerous problems in the manufacturing process of thermoplastic composites. Pre-impregnation processes such as melt impregnation or solution impregnation, tend to form a stiff towpreg that cannot be used for any textile preforming operation. Powder coating can be a destined to be a cost effective as well as efficient processing technology to produce a flexible towpreg. A method for production of flexible towpregs for thorough infusion of resin into fibers using electrostatic spray gun, which involves powder coating a bundle of filaments is described. During the powder coating process using electrostatic spray gun, powder particles fetched by a conveying air stream, from a fluidizing hopper, are charged in the high voltage corona discharge by ion bombardment and transported to the fiber tow through the combination of electrostatic, aerodynamic and gravitational forces. Aerodynamic forces have the obligation to carry the powder particles to the tow where electrostatic forces dominate and cause the adherence of powder particles to the potentially grounded tow. After the powder deposition, tow is made to pass through convective oven where powder particles glue to the reinforcement as a result of partial liquefaction of the powder. The towpreg formed is then wound by the take up device. Take up device is equipped with dancer arm which ensures constant line tension and thereby consistent powder deposition. The effects of process variables of the electrostatic spray process such as corona voltage, fluidizing air pressure, conveying air pressure, distance of gun from tow and tow velocity on maximum powder deposition are investigated and reported.     

Preservation of kombucha tea-effect of temperature on tea components and free radical scavenging properties

Kombucha tea is sugared black tea fermented with a consortium of acetic acid bacteria and yeasts (tea fungus) for 14 days. The tea tastes slightly sweet and acidic. The formation of tea fungal biofilms during storage is a big problem when kombucha tea is being stored and commercialized. Various thermal treatments have been tried for long-term storage of kombucha tea. The present study revealed the influence of heat on the biochemical constituents and the free radical scavenging properties of kombucha tea. Heat treatment at 60, 65, and 68 degrees C for 1 min controlled biofilm formation in kombucha tea without changing its clarity, taste, and flavor. However, tea polyphenols and black tea quality parameters showed varying stability during the storage period. A decrease in free radical scavenging properties was also found during the storage period. Because the biological activities of kombucha tea depended on the biochemical constituents, it was concluded that heat treatment was not a suitable method for kombucha tea preservation.     

Development of biodegradable aluminium carboxymethylcellulose matrices for mosquito larvicides

The use of ecofriendly biodegradable controlled-release formulations of mosquito larvicides could reduce the frequency of application and losses due to degradation of the insecticide compared with conventional formulations. Among the 20 matrices developed by entrapping the organophosphorus mosquito larvicide, fenthion, in carboxymethylcellulose ionotropically cross-linked with aluminium ions which were studied for release profiles, two matrices, CRF3b and CRF5b, were found to be stable for 16 and 14 weeks under simulated field conditions. The average concentration of fenthion released per week ranged from 0.06 to 3.5 mg litre(-1) for CRF3b and 0.09 to 2.72 mg litre(-1) for CRF5b. Of these two formulations, CRF3b was the more stable, maintaining the concentration of the active ingredient at the level required to effect mosquito control. The cumulative release of fenthion per pellet was 80% from CRF3b and 72% from CRF5b. Based on the study with fenthion, two similar matrices for triflumuron, a benzoylphenylurea insect growth regulator, STAR3b and STAR5b were developed. These matrices were stable up to 16 weeks with the average concentration of triflumuron released per week ranging from 0.05 to 3.44 mg litre(-1) for STAR3b and 0.07 to 2.71 mg litre(-1) for STARSb. The cumulative release of triflumuron per pellet was 75% from STAR3b and 76% from STAR5b. From the results of this study under simulated conditions, it is estimated that the application of four pellets of either fenthion or triflumuron per square metre of the breeding surface may play a useful role in controlling Culex quinquefasciatus Say in larval habitats for about 4 months.
