ABSTRACT: The reproductive traits and the monthly larval abundance of the mantis shrimp Oratosquilla oratoria were investigated in Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2002. The goal of the study was to elucidate the cause of changes in the monthly pattern of larval abundance from the 1980s to the 1990s as these changes relate to variation in the stock size of the adult shrimp. Oogenesis was divided into 10 stages by histological observation. The developmental stage of oocytes in an individual's ovary was synchronous, suggesting that almost all the oocytes in an ovary are spawned at the same time. The size at first maturity was estimated to be 7 ≤ body length ( BL ) < 8 cm. Fecundity was expressed as a function of BL , ranging from 19 300 eggs for 8 cm BL to 92 100 eggs for 14 cm BL . Small female shrimps (<10 cm BL ) spawned around August. Most large female shrimps (≥10 cm BL ) spawned around May, and some large female shrimps also spawned until September. Although most large female shrimps spawned in spring, the larval abundance was low before July and high from August onwards. The results suggest that a substantial decrease in the stock size of large individuals causes the low larval abundance before July. 相似文献

The study objective was to determine the effect of oral orbifloxacin (ORB) on
antimicrobial susceptibility and composition of fecal coliforms in cats. Nine cats were
randomized to two groups administered a daily oral dose of 2.5 and 5.0 mg ORB/kg for 7
days and a control group (three cats per group). Coliforms were isolated from stool
samples and were tested for susceptibilities to ORB and 5 other drugs. ORB concentration
in feces was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The coliforms
were undetectable after 2 days of ORB administration, and their number increased in most
cats after termination of the administration. Furthermore, only isolates of
Escherichia coli were detected in all cats before administration, and
those of Citrobacter freundii were detected after termination of the
administration. E. coli isolates exhibited high ORB susceptibility
[Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), ≤0.125 µg/ml]
or relatively low susceptibility (MIC, 1−2 µg/ml) with a
single gyrA mutation. C. freundii isolates largely
exhibited intermediate ORB susceptibility (MIC, 4
µg/ml), in addition to resistance to ampicillin and
cefazolin, and harbored qnrB, but not a gyrA mutation.
HPLC revealed that the peaks of mean concentration were 61.3 and 141.0
µg/g in groups receiving 2.5 and 5.0 mg/kg, respectively. Our findings
suggest that oral ORB may alter the total counts and composition of fecal coliform, but is
unlikely to yield highly fluoroquinolone-resistant mutants of E. coli and
C. freundii in cats, possibly because of the high drug concentration in

The applicability of the recombinant LipL32 for serodiagnosis of leptospiral infection in field rodents was
assessed in this study. An immunodominant region of LipL32 was determined by monoclonal antibodies, and then,
truncated LipL32 (tLipL32) was designed to contain the region (87–188th amino acid). The tLipL32 was compared
between two recombinant expression hosts Escherichia coli and Pichia
pastoris in ELISA. With field rat sera, tLipL32 expressed by P. pastoris
(tLipL32p) had high antigenicity without background reactions, while tLipL32 expressed by E.
coli (tLipL32e) showed high background reactions, which were reduced by pre-adsorption of sera with
E. coli. To evaluate tLipL32-ELISA, field rat sera were tentatively divided into a
Leptospira infection positive (12 sera) and a negative group (12 sera) based on the results
from flaB gene PCR of kidney samples and WB with whole Leptospira cell.
Consequently, the sensitivity of tLipL32p-ELISA for field rat sera was 83% . A similar result was obtained
from tLipL32e-ELISA with adsorbed sera, (92%). However, sensitivity of tLipL32e-ELISA using sera without an
adsorption treatment was 50%. Regardless of the expression host, tLipL32-ELISA had 100% specificity and
sensitivity in experimentally infected laboratory rats. These results suggest that recombinant LipL32
expressed by P. pastoris is more applicable for serodiagnosis in field rats due to a lack of

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of antimicrobial components (immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactoferrin (LF), lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP), and S100A7) in normal milk and their relation to host factors (Age, somatic cell count (SCC), days in milk, richness, and alpha diversity of the milk microbiota) in dairy cows using multivariate regression tree analyses, and to clarify how the milk microbiota is related to the obtained results. Thirty normal milk samples were collected from a commercial dairy farm in June 2020. The thresholds that predicted the concentration of each antimicrobial component in milk were obtained by regression tree analysis, and the beta-diversity of the milk microbiota composition between groups divided according to each threshold was compared by an analysis of similarities test. The IgA and LF concentrations were mainly predicted by the SCC (177,500 and 70,000 cells/ml, respectively), and the LAP and S100A7 concentrations were predicted by Age (29.667 and 40.3 months, respectively). No relationship was observed between the concentration of IgA, LAP, or S100A7 and the milk microbiota composition between the groups divided by the threshold for prediction, but the milk microbiota composition was significantly different between the groups divided by the threshold for predicting the LF concentration. Abstract. The activity of piromidic acid (PA, 8-ethyl-5, 8-dihydro-5-oxo-2-prior lidinopyrido [2,3–d] pyrimidine-6-carboxylic acid) against bacteria in fish was evaluated in vitro and in vivo .
In vitro , PA was effective against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria stocked in this laboratory and freshly isolated from fish. PA was active against organisms showing multiple drug-resistance and showed no cross-resistance to chloramphenicol, tetracycline and sulfamonomethoxine.
In vivo , orally administered PA was effective against experimental infections with Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio spp. in goldfish and eels. The efficacy of PA against these infections was equal to or higher than that of chloramphenicol, and higher than that of tetracycline. Distribution of PA in the Ash was investigated by bioassay and autoradiography. In the bioassay, orally administered PA was easily absorbed and distributed in the blood and tissues of major organs within 1 h after the administration. Peak levels were attained 2 to 4 h post dosing, and no residue was detected in the blood and tissues 48 h post dosing. The results obtained from the autoradiographic investigation in goldfish were similar to those from the bioassay. Therapeutic levels of PA were well tolerated by fish when administered with feed. 相似文献

The age-related changes of vaginal opening, body weight, the weights of the uterus and ovary, together with histological examination, serum 17beta-estradiol (E2) and progesterone levels were examined in intact female Crj:CD (SD) IGS rats between 21 and 36 days of age to understand the basic biological profile of changes of the female genital system during sexual maturation in the rat for female pubertal assays. With the beginning of the elevation of serum E2 level from 28 days of age, all parameters except body weight started to show drastic change until 31 days of age. The highest incidence of vaginal opening was recorded at 34 days of age. On macroscopic examinations, a number of rats showed uterine imbibition but vaginal opening. Immediately after the confirmation of the vaginal opening, the genital systems of three rats were observed microscopically. Both ovaries already had multiple corpora lutea, and degeneration of endometrial epithelial cells was observed. In conclusion, we obtained essential data on genital tract development of female Crj:CD (SD) IGS rats for in vivo screening assays that will contribute to detect potential endocrine active chemicals. We investigated the
concentration of the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the blood, ovarian
follicular fluid and uterine fluid of a clinical case of bovine metritis. A 2-year-old
lactating Holstein cow exhibited continuous fever >39.5°C for more than 2 weeks after
normal calving. The cow produced a fetid, watery, red-brown uterine discharge from the
vagina and was diagnosed with metritis. The LPS concentrations in plasma and uterine fluid
were 0.94 and 6.34 endotoxin units (EU)/ml, respectively. One of seven
follicles showed an extremely high level of LPS (12.40 EU/ml) compared to
the other follicles (0.62–0.97 EU/ml). These results might suggest the
presence of high concentration of LPS in follicles in cows with postpartum metritis. 相似文献

Four wethers were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment to evaluate in vivo digestibility of total mixed ration (TMR) silage with food by‐products for dairy cows, and the ruminal condition and nitrogen (N) balance were examined. Five by‐products (i.e. potato waste, noodle waste, soybean curd residue, soy sauce cake and green tea waste) were obtained. Four types of TMR silage were used: control (C) containing roughage and commercial concentrate, T1:20% and T1:40% containing the five by‐products replacing 20% and 40% of the commercial concentrate on a dry matter (DM) basis, respectively, and T2:40% containing three by‐products (potato waste, noodle waste and soybean curd residue) replacing 40% of the commercial concentrate on a DM basis. The ingredients were mixed and preserved in oil drum silos for 4 months. The TMR silages showed 4.02–4.44% and 1.75–2.19% for pH and lactic acid contents, respectively. The digestibility of DM and neutral detergent fiber, and total digestible nutrient content were higher (P < 0.05) for T2:40% feeding than for C feeding. Urinary nitrogen excretion tended to be lower (P = 0.07) for T2:40% than for C. The results suggested 40% replacing of commercial concentrate by using the three food by‐products can be most suitable for TMR silage. 相似文献

We designed a new method of
measuring the length of the ulnar nerve and determining standard values for F-wave
parameters of the ulnar nerve in clinically normal beagles. Nerve length must be precisely
measured to determine F-wave latency and conduction velocity. The length of the forelimb
has served as the length of the ulnar nerve for F-wave assessments, but report indicates
that F-wave latency is proportional to the length of the pathway traveled by nerve
impulses. Therefore, we measured the surface distance from a stimulus point to the spinous
process of the first thoracic vertebra (nerve length 1) and the anterior horn of the
scapula (nerve length 2) as landmarks through the olecranon and the shoulder blade
acromion. The correlation coefficients between the shortest F-wave latency and the length
of nerves 1, 2 or the forelimb were 0.61, 0.7 and 0.58. Nerve length 2 generated the
highest value. Furthermore, the anterior horn of the scapula was easily palpated in any
dog regardless of well-fed body. We concluded that nerve length 2 was optimal for
measuring the length of the ulnar nerve. 相似文献
