Four groups of Arctic charr (age 3+), previously exposed to natural photoperiod, were subjected to different photoperiod regimes from February 20: Simulated natural photoperiod (SNP; Tromsø 70°N), continuous light (LD 24:0) followed by short day (LD 6:18) from either May 1 (LFeb–May) or June 25 (LFeb–June), or continuous light (LD 24:0) throughout the experiment (LContinuous). In females, peak levels of estradiol-17β and testosterone were 6 and 10, 6 and 7, and 3 and 5 weeks advanced, in LFeb–May, LFeb–June and LContinuous, respectively, whereas in males plasma levels of 11-ketotestosterone peaked 8 weeks earlier in LFeb–May and LFeb–June than in SNP and LContinuous. Median ovulation time in LFeb–May and LFeb–June was advanced by 10 weeks compared to SNP and LContinuous, and median spermiation time (first observation of running milt in each individual) in LFeb–May, LFeb–June and LContinuous was advanced by 10, 7 and 5 weeks, compared to SNP. A switch from long to short day early in the reproductive cycle (LFeb–May and LFeb–June) apparently resulted in stronger synchronization of both ovulation and spermiation. Ovulation in LFeb–May and LFeb–June occurred over 3 weeks (LFeb–May) and 8 weeks (LFeb–June), as compared to 10 weeks in the SNP group, whereas all males (except one individual) began spermiating over a period of 3 weeks (LFeb–June), or less (LFeb–May), as compared to 7 weeks in the SNP group. Lack of a short day stimulus (LContinuous), on the other hand, resulted in larger variation in the timing of final maturation, with ovulation and spermiation being spread over 15 weeks. Low egg survival in LFeb–May (17% versus 60% and 97% for LContinuous and SNP) indicate that a long day signal of 10 weeks early in the reproductive cycle may be too short to ensure good egg and sperm quality. Photoperiod manipulation did not affect the proportion of maturing fish.  相似文献

Epidemics of the obligate biotrophic fungus Puccinia lagenophorae might be used to control populations of the annual plant, groundsel, Senecio vulgaris . Insight into the mechanisms of survival of P. lagenophorae over winter may help to explain the number of inoculum sources, and their strength (assessed by number and size of pustules), present in an S. vulgaris population in spring, indicating the probability and rate of progress of a subsequent epidemic. Results of the study indicated survival of the rust as mycelium within the host over winter. Survival outside the host is unlikely, because aecidiospores lost their capacity to germinate over winter and teliospores have not been reported to be infectious. Survival of S. vulgaris plants over winter was reduced by rust infection in autumn. The mortality of S. vulgaris was 30–100% depending on the date of infection. All plants infected early in autumn died but those infected late in autumn were more likely to survive. In turn, poor survival of the host impacted on the survival of P. lagenophorae over winter. Consequently, the results of the study suggest that no inoculum sources, or only a few weak ones, are present in vulgaris populations in spring. This suggestion was supported by observations of an S. vulgaris population at a ruderal site. Therefore, research on biological weed control should focus on increasing the negative impact of P. lagenophorae on S. vulgaris populations while augmenting the probability of survival of the rust over winter to start new epidemics in spring.  相似文献

Teleutospores ofPuccinia punctiformis were used for germination and inoculation experiments. The percentage of germination increased with increasing root extract concentration separately from the spore-suspension present in the same Petri dish.Volatile substances in root extracts of the thistle plant markedly promoted the germination of the teleutospores.Inoculation experiments showed that underground parts of plants ofC. arvense can be infected. The percentage of diseased shoots emerging from inoculated root segments was higher than of those emerging from seeds. Three types of systemically infected shoots could be distinguished.The development of spermogonia on the diseased shoots indicates that at first the hyphae are haploid, but later on become dikaryotic as shown by the formation of uredosori. Teleutospores are thus responsible for the systemic infection of the plants.Samenvatting Teleutosporen vanPuccinia punctiformis zijn gebruikt voor kiemings- en incubatieproeven.Vluchtige substanties, aanwezig in wortelextracten van de akkerdistel, hebben een grote invloed op de kieming van teleutosporen. Het percentage aangetaste scheuten opkomend uit wortelsegmenten was groter dan dat van scheuten verkregen uit zaden. Behalve systemisch geïnfecteerde scheuten werden ook enkele lokaal geïnfecteerde scheuten aangetroffen. De systemisch geïnfecteerde planten konden worden onderscheiden in drie verschillende types.De ontwikkeling van spermogonia op de systemisch aangetaste scheuten wijst er op dat het aanwezige mycelium haploid is, zoals ook te verwachten is bij infecties met basidiosporen. The spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) is considered a promising species for coldwater aquaculture. It is a sedentary, bottom-dwelling fish which exhibits a calm and “non-stressed” behaviour in captivity. There are, however, no reports on the physiological responses to stressors in this species. In the present study we investigated primary (cortisol secretion) and secondary (glucose mobilization) responses to common aquaculture stressors like disturbance and hypoxia. Pre-stress plasma cortisol levels were within those generally considered representative for unstressed fish (~ 10 ng ml− 1), whereas basal glucose levels were unusually low (0.3–0.4 mM). After exposure to a short, but severe disturbance challenge (emptying the tank of water for 10 min), the increase in plasma cortisol level was slow and relatively weak, reaching a peak level of 25 ng ml− 1 4 to 8 h after disturbance. When the fish were exposed to a gradually decreasing oxygen level in the tank, a significantly elevated plasma cortisol level (35 ng ml− 1) was seen in the fish that remained in the tank until oxygen saturation had decreased to 20% oxygen saturation after 2.5 h. However, a two-fold higher plasma cortisol level (~ 70 ng ml− 1) was seen in all fish exposed to reduced oxygen levels (60, 40 and 20% oxygen saturation) after 3.5 h recovery in normoxic water. Plasma glucose levels showed only moderate increases (~ 70%) following disturbance and hypoxia challenges. An in vivo injection of ACTH caused a strong elevation of plasma cortisol (peak level ~ 170 ng ml− 1), demonstrating a high capacity for interrenal steroidogenesis in the spotted wolffish. The slow and relatively weak cortisol response to stressors, and low plasma glucose levels, may relate to the sedentary lifestyle of the spotted wolffish. The stress-response is characterised by a passive (reactive) coping style, which is considered adaptive for farming of this species.  相似文献

The quality of day-old chick placement and management upon arrival have a major impact on first-week mortality (FWM) and subsequent welfare in layers. The present study investigated FWM and causes of FWM in 50 flocks of layers. Post mortem results from 983 chickens showed that 50% died from infections, whereas noninfectious causes, in particular dehydration and nephropathy with visceral gout, made up the remaining causes of mortality. Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis were identified as the most significant bacterial pathogens associated with FWM. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between FWM and total mortality during rearing, and a model predicting total mortality in the rearing period based on FWM was established. A statistically significant correlation between FWM and uniformity of the flock was not demonstrated at 1-2 wk of age or at approximately 15 wk of age. Genetic characterization of E. coli and E. faecalis provided evidence for a polyclonal nature of these infections in affected flocks, indicating different sources of infection. Results obtained underline the importance of minimizing FWM to a level less than 1%.  相似文献
