Atrioventricular valvular insufficiency and congestive heart failure in a carpet python

Right atrioventricular valve insufficiency and bilateral congestive heart failure were identified in a carpet python (Morelia spilota variegata) with the aid of colour Doppler echocardiography, electrocardiography and radiography. The snake failed to respond to diuretic therapy and was euthanased. Based on this case, it appears that bilateral congestive failure is feasible in univentricular animals with lesions restricted to one side of the heart. Loop diuretic therapy may be inappropriate in non-crocodilian reptiles because reptiles lack a loop of Henle.     

The potential environmental impact of pesticides removed from sprayers during cleaning

BACKGROUND: There is concern that pesticide residues on the external surfaces of sprayers could have an adverse impact on the environment if they are washed off, yet there is a need to remove these residues for health reasons. The aim of this study was to quantify pesticide residues contained in washings from cleaning discrete parts of a sprayer and to assess their likely environmental impact. RESULTS: The boom/rear of the sprayer and the spray tank accounted for 80% of the total pesticide load in the washings. Predicted environmental pesticide concentrations from sprayer washings were lower than predictions from the FOCUS surface water model for pesticides used under normal agricultural conditions, although for tebuconazole this difference was smaller than for the other compounds investigated. The field area over which the residues may need to be uniformly deposited to avoid overdosing during infield cleaning was typically less than 0.5 m(2), with a maximum value of 4 m(2). CONCLUSIONS: It is unlikely that infield cleaning will lead to overdosing. External residues are not insignificant, so any adverse impact on the environment must be mitigated. Appropriate measures include cleaning in the field away from surface waters and other sensitive areas, and cleaning machines over bunded areas or similar.     

Evaluating the utility of Arabidopsis thaliana as a model for understanding heterosis in hybrid crops

Despite the phenomenon of heterosis having been used to improve crop productivity for almost a century, there is little understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved. Heterosis has been described recently in the widely used plant model Arabidopsis thaliana. To assess the opportunity afforded by this system, we have developed, through pollination to a male sterile female parent (Ler ms1), a range of hybrids of A. thaliana accessions. We tested this method of hybrid production in A. thaliana by comparing seed produced by natural pollination and hand pollination of emasculated plants. Our results demonstrate that using male sterile lines, which more closely represent methods used for hybrid crop production, circumvents the problems associated with the analysis of hybrids produced from emasculated plants. We identified hybrid combinations exhibiting mid-parent heterosis for vegetative fresh weight ranging from −9 to 103% and characterised heterosis in the reciprocal hybrids of one strongly heterotic combination. We found no evidence of a relationship between the extent of genetic relatedness of A. thaliana accessions and the strength of heterosis exhibited by their hybrids. The ecoresponsive genome of Daphnia pulex

We describe the draft genome of the microcrustacean Daphnia pulex, which is only 200 megabases and contains at least 30,907 genes. The high gene count is a consequence of an elevated rate of gene duplication resulting in tandem gene clusters. More than a third of Daphnia's genes have no detectable homologs in any other available proteome, and the most amplified gene families are specific to the Daphnia lineage. The coexpansion of gene families interacting within metabolic pathways suggests that the maintenance of duplicated genes is not random, and the analysis of gene expression under different environmental conditions reveals that numerous paralogs acquire divergent expression patterns soon after duplication. Daphnia-specific genes, including many additional loci within sequenced regions that are otherwise devoid of annotations, are the most responsive genes to ecological challenges.
