The spontaneous EEG and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were examined in chickens before and after electrical stunning using a waterbath stunner. Fifty-four per cent of the birds became epileptic and lost their SEPs, and 17% were non-epileptic and appeared to retain their SEPs. It was concluded that there was a reasonably close association between the presence of epileptiform activity in the EEG and the absence of SEPs following electrical stunning, but that the absence of SEPs could be preferred as an indicator of an effective stun on conceptual grounds.  相似文献

1. This study compared the effects of electrical stunning delivered using high and low frequency waveforms on carcase and meat quality of turkeys processed under commercial conditions. 2. The use of a high frequency waveform (1400 Hz) resulted in a faster bleedout and an improvement in carcase quality associated with a substantial reduction in haemorrhagic downgrading conditions. 3. Frequency of the applied waveform influenced breast muscle pH and colour although the magnitude of the differences was considered to be of minimal significance in influencing consumer perception.  相似文献

The current procedures for slaughtering European eels (Anguilla anguilla) for food are very slow and cause suffering. Although there is little legislation for protecting the welfare of fish at slaughter, the legislation covering farmed mammals and birds at slaughter is well defined, requiring that these animals be rendered insensible immediately or without fear or pain prior to being killed. For many mammals and birds this can be achieved using an electrical stun, which is then followed by a procedure that actually kills them, such as exsanguination. This paper reports the investigation of the possibility of using electricity to stun eels, rendering them insensible to pain. Using 1 s duration alternating currents at 50 Hz applied directly across the head of the fish, it was shown that it was possible to stun the fish with currents of 0.1 A and above. Increasing the applied current increased the length of the period of the stun. When the duration of the application of the current was increased to 30 s it was found that the fish could be killed using currents between 0.50 A and 0.95 A. These results show that it is possible to use electricity to instantly stun eels and also to kill them by using longer duration currents. The use of preslaughter electrical stunning at slaughter could allow the welfare of these fish at slaughter to be improved greatly.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To identify features of canine idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (CIPF) using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and to correlate these features with clinical stages of the disease. METHODS: Ten dogs with signalment, history and clinical signs highly suggestive of CIPF were investigated. Thoracic radiography, haematology and biochemistry profiles, bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage and HRCT were performed in each case. The dogs were classified as having mild, moderate or severe stages of the disease based on their clinical presentation and radiographic signs. Features identified by HRCT were correlated with these disease stages. RESULTS: HRCT showed a spectrum of pulmonary changes and it was possible to match some of these to the stage of CIPF. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: HRCT is used extensively in humans in the diagnosis and treatment planning of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This preliminary study identifies the high-resolution computed tomographic features of CIPF in a small group of dogs. With further work it may be possible to use HRCT as a non-invasive tool for diagnosing, staging and therapeutically monitoring CIPF.  相似文献

1. Carcase and meat quality were evaluated under commercial conditions in 400 broilers either killed with a mixture of 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon in air or stunned with a 50 Hz AC with clipped sine wave.

2. Compared with electrical stunning, killing broilers with the gas mixture eliminated or substantially reduced the prevalence of carcase and meat quality defects.

3. The results also showed that killing broilers with a mixture of 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon would enable filleting (deboning) to be performed at 4 h post mortem without adversely affecting the cook loss or texture of breast meat.  相似文献

The time taken for a conventional chest stick to produce the loss of flash-evoked responsiveness in the electrocorticogram of anaesthetised pigs was compared with a method involving fibrillation of the heart. On average severing the brachiocephalic trunk and anterior vena cava took 18 seconds to induce a loss of brain responsiveness, and inducing cardiac fibrillation took 19 seconds. It is concluded that a pig slaughtering method that stuns the brain and at the same time fibrillates the heart is likely to be more humane than the conventional slaughtering methods where there is a delay between the stunning and sticking operations.  相似文献
