A modification of the Jonson-Nishita digestion-distillation apparatus was used to determine the S constituents of sediments from three forest lakes (Munajärvi, Orajärvi, and Sorvalampi) in southern Finland. Lakes Munajärvi and Orajarvi had undergone marked acidification during the past 30 yr or so presumably due to acid deposition as revealed from sedimentary diatom and chrysophycean remains. Organic S constituted a major part of the total S, and during the recent years the portion of C-bonded S increased in the Lakes Munajarvi and Sorvalampi more strongly than the portion of sulfate esters. In the case of Lake Orajärvi the concentration of total S increased by a factor of 2.3 from its preindustrial level which seems to be due to an increase of both C-bonded S and SO4 ?2. Coincidentally with the up core increase in total S, the sediment cores of Orajärvi and Munajarvi were strongly depleted of the 34S-isotope (r = ?0.83 in Orajärvi n = 15, and r = ? 0.84 in Munajärvi n = 10). This implies that the recent changes in sedimentary S are related to the increasing input of airborne pollutant S since about 1850 in Orajarvi and 1950 in Munajärvi provided that the 210Pb dating of the cores is correct and diagenetic changes have not greatly altered the vertical distribution of S in these sediments.  相似文献

Abstract – Mesotrophic Lake Pohjalampi in eastern Finland was fished intensively from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, the biomasses of the dominant fish species, roach and bream, were reduced to 14% and 6%, respectively, of that in 1992. The total biomass of percids was, however, unchanged or slightly increased. The proportion of benthic invertebrates in the total food of the fish decreased from 57% to 36% during the study period, whereas the proportion of zooplankton increased from 31% to 56%. At the same time the number of young planktivorous fish increased. Thus, the main object of fish predation turned from benthic invertebrates to zooplankton due to change in fish population structure. At the beginning of the study the amount of detritus eaten by cyprinids was about 620 kg  ·  ha−1  ·  year−1, but this decreased by 82% due to the intensive fishing. Thus, by recycling nutrients from the sediment, the detrivorous-benthivorous feeding of cyprinids is an important factor in the nutrient balance of the lake. Note  相似文献

Phenolic compounds from the lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) were identified using LC-TOFMS, LC-MS/MS, and NMR experiments. The compounds were extracted from the plant material using methanol in an ultrasonicator and further isolated and purified using solid-phase extraction and preparative liquid chromatographic techniques. A total of 28 phenolic compounds were at least tentatively identified, including flavonols, anthocyanidins, catechins and their glycosides, and different caffeoyl and ferulic acid conjugates. This is apparently the first report of coumaroyl-hexose-hydroxyphenol, caffeoyl-hexose-hydroxyphenol, coumaroyl-hexose-hydroxyphenol, quercetin-3-O-alpha-arabinofuranoside, kaempferol-pentoside, and kaempferol-deoxyhexoside in the plant, and the flavonol acylglycosides quercetin-3-O-[4' '-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaroyl)]-alpha-rhamnose and kaempferol-3-O-[4' '-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaroyl)]-alpha-rhamnose are presented here for the first time ever. The formation of plant-derived biomolecules during sauerkraut fermentation was studied. Cabbage was fermented with a starter culture, and the results were compared to the results of spontaneous fermentation. The concentration of flavonoids and glucosinolates was analyzed by HPLC, and that of the glucosinolate breakdown products, by GC-MS. Of the 20 different flavonoids tested, only kaempferol was found (0.9 mg/ kg FW, fresh weight). The content of kaempferol remained constant in the cabbage fiber matrix over the fermentation process. The nitrite concentration was below the detection limit in both fermentations. The total glucosinolate content in the raw material was 3.71 micro mol/g DW, dry weight. Glucosinolates were totally decomposed in both fermentations during two weeks, and different types of breakdown products were formed. Isothiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, goitrin, allyl cyanide, and nitriles were determined in the fermented cabbage. Isothiocyanates and allyl cyanide were the predominant breakdown products in both fermentations. Sulforaphane nitrile and goitrin were found only in small quantities in the end products.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were analyzed in sediment cores from five small forest lakes in Finland. The catchments of the lakes were undisturbed (2 lakes) or only very slightly disturbed by human activity (3 lakes). None of the lakes had runoff delivery of PAH from their shores. Lead-210 dating of four lakes enabled the calculation of individual PAH fluxes over the past 100 to 150 yr. The sedimentary distribution of abiotic PAH in these lakes appears to be indicative of the development of combustion-generated energy production in Finland and adjacent countries. This development is reflected in an overall increase in sedimentary PAH since about 1850. After World War II the rate of accumulation of PAH continues to increase. The large variation between the PAH fluxes of different lakes indicates different trapping efficiencies and/or different preservation of the PAH compounds due to limnological differences between the lakes.  相似文献

Context

One approach to maintain the resilience of biotic communities is to protect the variability of abiotic characteristics of Earth’s surface, i.e. geodiversity. In terrestrial environments, the relationship between geodiversity and biodiversity is well recognized. In streams, the abiotic properties of upstream catchments influence stream communities, but the relationships between catchment geodiversity and aquatic biodiversity have not been previously tested.

Objectives

The aim was to compare the effects of local environmental and catchment variables on stream biodiversity. We specifically explored the usefulness of catchment geodiversity in explaining the species richness on stream macroinvertebrate, diatom and bacterial communities.

Methods

We used 3 geodiversity variables, 2 land use variables and 4 local habitat variables to examine species richness variation across 88 stream sites in western Finland. We used boosted regression trees to explore the effects of geodiversity and other variables on biodiversity.

Results

We detected a clear effect of catchment geodiversity on species richness, although the traditional local habitat and land use variables were the strongest predictors. Especially soil-type richness appeared as an important factor for species richness. While variables related to stream size were the most important for macroinvertebrate richness and partly for bacterial richness, the importance of water chemistry and land use for diatom richness was notable.

Conclusions

In addition to traditional environmental variables, geodiversity may affect species richness variation in streams, for example through changes in water chemistry. Geodiversity information could be used as a proxy for predicting stream species richness and offers a supplementary tool for conservation efforts.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) represents one of the richest flavonoid sources among plants. Flavonoids play variable, species-dependent roles in plant defences. In bilberry, flavonoid metabolism is activated in response to solar radiation but not against mechanical injury. In this paper, the defence reaction and biosynthesis of phenolic compounds of bilberry was studied after infection by a fungal endophyte (Paraphaeosphaeria sp.) and a pathogen (Botrytis cinerea). The defence response of bilberry was faster against the endophyte than the pathogen. All flavonoid biosynthesis genes tested were activated by each infection. Biosynthesis and accumulation of phenolic acids, flavan-3-ols and oligomeric proanthocyanidins were clearly elevated in both infected samples. Infection by the pathogen promoted specifically accumulation of epigallocatechin, quercetin-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-α-rhamnoside, quercetin-3-O-(4”-HMG)-R-rhamnoside, chlorogenic acid and coumaroyl quinic acid. The endophyte-infected plants had a higher content of quercetin-3-glucuronide and coumaroyl iridoid. Therefore, accumulation of individual phenolic compounds could be specific for each infection. Quantity of insoluble proanthocyanidins was the highest in control plants, suggesting that they might act as storage compounds and become activated by degradation upon infection.  相似文献
