The severity of the erosive and ulcerative lesions of the squamous gastric mucosa in 10 standardbred racehorses in training was classified according to a standard scoring system. Each horse was then treated orally for 30 days with 50 g/100 kg bodyweight daily of a pectin-lecithin complex mixed into the feed. At the end of the period of treatment, the gastric lesions were re-evaluated gastroscopically and the scores were compared with those assigned at the previous evaluation. In three of the horses the gastric ulcerations had healed completely, and in six others the lesions had improved significantly. 相似文献

Background
Recent evidence suggests a two-way interaction between the immune and circadian systems. Circadian control of immune factors, as well as the effect of immunological variables on circadian rhythms, might be key elements in both physiological and pathological responses to the environment. Among these relevant factors, galectin-1 is a member of a family of evolutionarily-conserved glycan-binding proteins with both extracellular and intracellular effects, playing important roles in immune cell processes and inflammatory responses. Many of these actions have been studied through the use of mice with a null mutation in the galectin-1 (Lgals1) gene. The origin, nature and quantity of polysaccharides in the walls of the epigeal mounds of a species of soil-feeding termite,
Cubitermes oculatus, and a fungus-growing termite, Macrotermes subhyalinus, found in Senegal, and of soil not considered to be under the influence of termites, were studied to obtain a clearer picture
of the structural stability of these materials. The compounds were extractedand analysed by high performance liquid chromatography.
We found that the walls of mounds made by soil-feeding species were very rich in sugars soluble in aqueous acid or hot water.
Most of the sugars originated from cellulose and hemicellulose, and only a small proportion from microorganisms. There were
also significant amounts of stachyose in the mound walls and in the reference soil. This sugar was probably formed by the
surrounding vegetation, which was mainly leguminous crops. Comparison of the mineral and organic-mineral particle sizes of
samples confirmed that the walls of soil-feeding termite mounds where there is the greatest redistribution of clay have the
best aggregating capacity. The results therefore show that the polysaccharides in mound walls of soil-feeding termites are
mostly of plant origin. Their influence on the stability of these structure is discussed. The walls of fungus-growing termite
mounds contain little organic matter and hence low levels of polysaccharides, which are mainly of plant origin.

Mars' polar regions are covered with ice-rich layered deposits that potentially contain a record of climate variations. The sounding radar SHARAD on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mapped detailed subsurface stratigraphy in the Promethei Lingula region of the south polar plateau, Planum Australe. Radar reflections interpreted as layers are correlated across adjacent orbits and are continuous for up to 150 kilometers along spacecraft orbital tracks. The reflectors are often separated into discrete reflector sequences, and strong echoes are seen as deep as 1 kilometer. In some cases, the sequences are dipping with respect to each other, suggesting an interdepositional period of erosion. In Australe Sulci, layers are exhumed, indicating recent erosion. 相似文献

To evaluate the importance of urban woodlands to serve as potential sites for biodiversity conservation, we analysed bird,
carabid beetle and small mammal community responses to urbanisation at different spatial scales. We analysed the relationships
between the variations of the structure (species richness S, diversity H′ and dominance D) of animal communities of woodlands
distributed along a rural–urban gradient, and the variations along this same gradient of (1) the vegetation within woodlands,
(2) the landscape at 100 m and (3) 600 m around the woodlands. We identified the spatial scales whose variations along the
gradient most affected each animal community structure, and characterised community responses to these variations. Our results
showed that urbanisation affected taxa differently according to their dispersal ability. Carabid beetles, less mobile, seem
to be sensitive to increasing fragmentation and built surfaces from periurban to town centre which could make their movement
within the urban landscape difficult. Birds, mobile species, seem to be more sensitive to variations of the vegetation structure
within woodlands from periurban to town centre that could affect their capacity to maintain in habitat patches. Although our
study did not allow relating the small mammal community structure to urbanisation, it suggests that this taxa is sensitive
to urban local disturbances. A relevant management scale of woodlands can be specified for each taxa conservation. Urban woodlands
accommodate over 50% of the species present in periurban woodlands, and effective management could enhance this number. Woodlands
seem to be a good choice for promoting biodiversity conservation in towns. 相似文献

Seventeen racehorses were referred with a history of poor performance, recurrent fever, coughing and/or nasal discharge. All patients underwent a thorough diagnostic procedure, including physical examination, complete blood count, plasma fibrinogen estimation, arterial blood gas analysis, thoracic radiology and ultrasonography, endoscopy, tracheal aspiration with cytological and cultural evaluation, including sensitivity test. According to these procedures, bacterial pneumonia was diagnosed in 14 horses and bacterial pleuropneumonia in 3 horses. Streptococcus spp. were isolated in 11 cases (61.2%), Rhodococcus equi in 3 cases (16.6%), Klebsiella pneumoniae in 3 cases (16.6%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in one case (5.6%). 相似文献
