Direct observation of internal spin structure of magnetic vortex cores

Thin film nanoscale elements with a curling magnetic structure (vortex) are a promising candidate for future nonvolatile data storage devices. Their properties are strongly influenced by the spin structure in the vortex core. We have used spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy on nanoscale iron islands to probe for the first time the internal spin structure of magnetic vortex cores. Using tips coated with a layer of antiferromagnetic chromium, we obtained images of the curling in-plane magnetization around and of the out-of-plane magnetization inside the core region. The experimental data are compared with micromagnetic simulations. The results confirm theoretical predictions that the size and the shape of the vortex core as well as its magnetic field dependence are governed by only two material parameters, the exchange stiffness and the saturation magnetization that determines the stray field energy.     

Vertical distribution and isotopic composition of living planktonic foraminifera in the Western north atlantic

Thirteen species of planktonic foraminifera collected with vertically stratified zooplankton tows in the slope water, Gulf Stream cold core ring, and northern Sargasso Sea show significant differences in their vertical distributions in the upper 200 meters of these different hydrographic regimes. Gulf Stream cold core rings may be responsible for a southern displacement of the faunal boundary associated with the Gulf Stream when reconstructed from the deep-sea sediment record. Oxygen isotope analyses of seven species reveal that nonspinose species (algal symbiont-barren) apparently calcify in oxygen isotope equilibrium, whereas spinose species usually calcify out of oxygen isotope equilibrium by approximately -0.3 to -0.4 per mil in delta(18)O values. The isotope data indicate that foraminifera shells calcify in depth zones that are significantly narrower than the overall vertical distribution of a species would imply.     

Revealing magnetic interactions from single-atom magnetization curves

The miniaturization of magnetic devices toward the limit of single atoms calls for appropriate tools to study their magnetic properties. We demonstrate the ability to measure magnetization curves of individual magnetic atoms adsorbed on a nonmagnetic metallic substrate with use of a scanning tunneling microscope with a spin-polarized tip. We can map out low-energy magnetic interactions on the atomic scale as evidenced by the oscillating indirect exchange between a Co adatom and a nanowire on Pt(111). These results are important for the understanding of variations that are found in the magnetic properties of apparently identical adatoms because of different local environments.     

Mechanism of gonadotropin action in amphibia: involvement of mitochondria

Luteinizing hormone (a pituitary gonadotropic hormone) stimulates Delta(5)-3beta- hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in the microsomal fraction of frog testes when incubated together with the mitochondria; incubation together with the nuclei instead of the mitochondria does not result in increased, Delta(5)-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity. The increase is not, induced by adenosine triphosphate, it appears to be hormone-specific, and it is sensitive to puromycin and actinomycin D. These data suggest that the mitochondrial DNA may be involved in mediating the action of luteinizing hormone in amphibian steroidogenesis.     

Effect of temperature on photosynthesis of lettuce adapted to different light and temperature conditions

Gas exchange of lettuce plants, pre-grown in growth chambers at different irradiances (18, 37, 70 W m^?2) and temperatures (6, 14, 22°C) were measured in the range of 2–22°C. In weak light (18 W m^?2) there was no increase in CO₂ uptake above 2°C, and even in 70 W m^?2 the highest rates were obtained at about 10°C only. The response of net photosynthesis of lettuce to temperature is diminished as a result of morphological plant adaptations, i.e. specific leaf area or top-to-root weight ratio. The temperature optimum for dry-matter production is much higher than that for CO₂ uptake. Therefore, photosynthesis is an unsuitable criterion for temperature control in greenhouses.

Investor ownership or social investment? Changing farmland ownership in Saskatchewan,Canada

There is growing recognition that land grabbing is a global phenomenon. In Canada, investors are particularly interested in Saskatchewan farmland, the province where 40 % of country’s agricultural land is situated. This article examines how the changing political, economic, and legal context under neoliberalism has shaped patterns of farmland ownership in Saskatchewan, between 2002 and 2014. Our research indicates that over this time, the amount of farmland owned by investors increased 16-fold. Also, the concentration of farmland ownership is on the rise, with the share of farmland owned by the largest four private owners increasing six-fold. Our methodology addresses some of the criticisms raised in the land grabbing literature. By using land titles data, we identified farmland investors and determined very precisely their landholdings thus allowing us to provide a fine-grained analysis of the actual patterns of farmland ownership. Although the article analyzes changes to farmland ownership in a specific historical, cultural and legislative context, it serves as the basis for a broader discussion of the values and priorities that land ownership policies reflect. Namely, we contrast an ‘open for business’ approach that prioritizes financial investment to one based on a land sovereignty approach that prioritizes social investment. The latter has greater potential if the aim is ecological sustainability and food sovereignty.
