Congress report on progress in pestivirus virology

This mini-review highlights new information on various research aspects presented by specialists from all over the world at the 4th Pestivirus meeting held in Giessen (Germany) from March 15-19, 1999. Especial attention is paid towards differences in humeral and cellular immune response of naive and persistently infected calves with BVDV, and towards BVD eradication programmes in the Scandinavian countries. The development of techniques for an early diagnosis of CSF in live pigs and the progress on both sub-unit and MLV marker vaccines against this disease are reported.     

A case of chronic zinc poisoning in calves fed with zinc-contaminated roughage

A case of zinc intoxication in young female cattle is described. The clinical signs consisted of reduced appetite, emaciation, submandibular oedema and diarrhoea. The source of zinc proved to be roughage harvested in the vicinity of a factory galvanizing steel tubes. In this roughage zinc levels between 3000 and 7300 mg/kg dry weight were found. In the liver of four animals zinc levels varied between 420 and 1600 mg/kg, and between 910 and 1680 mg/kg dry weight in the kidneys.     

A long-snouted predatory dinosaur from africa and the evolution of spinosaurids

Fossils discovered in Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) rocks in the Tenere Desert of central Niger provide new information about spinosaurids, a peculiar group of piscivorous theropod dinosaurs. The remains, which represent a new genus and species, reveal the extreme elongation and transverse compression of the spinosaurid snout. The postcranial bones include blade-shaped vertebral spines that form a low sail over the hips. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the enlarged thumb claw and robust forelimb evolved during the Jurassic, before the elongated snout and other fish-eating adaptations in the skull. The close phylogenetic relationship between the new African spinosaurid and Baryonyx from Europe provides evidence of dispersal across the Tethys seaway during the Early Cretaceous.     

Dirofilaria immitis in cats from inner Sydney

Two hundred feral cats from the inner suburbs of Sydney were examined post mortem for adult Dirofilaria immitis and circulating microfilariae, and 101 of these cats were tested for heartworm antigens by an ELISA. Only 2 cats (1%) had adult heartworms, the blood sample from another cat contained a single microfilaria. The blood of a further three cats contained small amounts of D immitis antigen. Although D immitis occurs in cats in Sydney, the prevalence is not high enough to warrant prophylactic treatment.     

Udder oedema associated with adrenocortical insufficiency in a herd of Holstein/Friesian cows

The possible involvement of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis with severe pre- and post partum udder oedema was studied in a herd of 60 Holstein/Friesian cows. The prevalence of udder oedema in this herd was about 75 per cent. The animals were fed a diet containing high levels of potassium (average daily potassium intake 410 g per cow). The concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride and total protein in the plasma of the cows were within their normal ranges. In one animal a very low plasma cortisol concentration (2.30 ng/ml) was accompanied by normal plasma glucose and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. The adrenal responsiveness of two heifers with severe udder oedema was impaired one month after parturition in comparison with 11 normal animals (increases from 3.27 to 38.8 and 23.2 to 37.8 ng cortisol/ml compared with 8.02 +/- 1.19 to 146 +/- 16.7 ng cortisol/ml but returned to normal spontaneously after 175 days. One cow was diagnosed as having primary adrenocortical insufficiency.
