This study describes the age-related variation in boar taint compounds, skatole and androstenone, and testosterone, oestradiol-17 beta (E17 beta), oestrone sulphate (ES), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS), triiodothyronine (T(3)) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in six boars. Three pairs of littermates of crossbred entire male pigs (from three Yorkshire x Duroc dams and one Hampshire sire) were included. Blood samples were taken at the age of 9-15 weeks and thereafter at weekly intervals from the age of 20-32 weeks. Plasma concentrations of skatole, androstenone, testosterone, E17 beta, ES, DHEAS, T(3) and IGF-1 were measured. We found that skatole levels in boars increased at the age around puberty after an increase in the levels of testicular steroids. Levels of skatole were not associated with the levels of sex steroids, T(3) and IGF-1. However, the increased level of testicular steroids is probably the underlying factor needed for high skatole levels to occur although the specific mechanism leading to increased skatole levels remains unknown.  相似文献

A simple method for the analysis of major wine volatiles and semivolatiles by stir bar sorptive extraction in combination with thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SBSE-TD-GC-MS) was developed. Significant experimental parameters such as extraction time, temperature, salt addition, pH, and thermal desorption parameters were optimized to provide a sensitive and robust analytical method. The method provided good repeatability (%RSD < 10%) for 38 major wine volatile compounds, including alcohols, acids, esters, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, and lactones. Quantitative data for 62 South African red and white wines were used to study the suitability of major volatile data for the differentiation of wine samples according to grape variety or cultivar. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) showed that most of the variation in volatile composition between wine samples could be ascribed to differences in wine age, wood contact, and fermentation practices. Despite the contribution of these factors, discriminant analysis (DA) was successfully applied to the classification of red and white wine samples according to cultivar.  相似文献

After cryopreservation for 13.3-15.8 years, the viability of the infective larvae (L3) of Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis, Oesophagostomum columbianum, Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, T. falculatus, Nematodirus spathiger, Chabertia ovina and Dictyocaulus filaria was assessed in sheep, by being deposited at their predilection sites. D. filaria was, however, an exception, in that the L3 were injected into the jugular vein. The mean development of all the species was 22.8%, but if three species (O. columbianum, C. ovina and D. filaria), that developed poorly are disregarded, then the mean development was 33.4%, similar to previous tests after shorter periods of cryopreservation. The L3 of some of the species appeared sluggish when examined 10-15 min after being thawed, and in the case of H. contortus practically all the larvae of the original batch tested in the previous trials of the series appeared dead when thawed for use in the present trial, and were replaced by another batch of L3 of the same species. When re-examined after about 8 h, however, a high percentage of the L3 of the original batch appeared to have become revitalised, and their viability was tested in a trial reported elsewhere. The intestinal cells of the majority of the L3 of N. spathiger, O. circumcincta and C. ovina were vesiculated when they were thawed. Nevertheless, the degree of development of the former two species was of the highest in the trial, and it can be concluded that this phenomenon does not necessarily impede the viability of larvae.  相似文献

A 12-year-old female, neutered German shepherd dog developed progressive hindlimb followed by forelimb ataxia leading to tetraplegia. Neurological examination suggested lower motor dysfunction. Biochemical evaluation revealed a monoclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia, hypoalbuminaemia and hypercalcaemia. Multiple lytic lesions were identified radiographically in numerous bones. A bone marrow aspirate confirmed the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, with large numbers of plasma cells seen in clusters. An electromyogram revealed positive sharp waves and fibrillation potentials in the skeletal muscles of the limbs, suggesting a polyneuropathy. The dog was treated with chemotherapy using melphalan and prednisolone. Both the hypergammaglobulinaemia and the polyneuropathy resolved and the dog had normal motor function four weeks after commencing treatment. Polyneuropathy may occur as a paraneoplastic syndrome secondary to myeloma, and in this case was reversible following treatment of the underlying disease.  相似文献

The expression of growth factors was evaluated immunohistochemically in normal and cystic ovaries of sows. The immunohistochemically stained area (IHCSA) was quantified by image analysis to analyse the expression of these proteins in the follicular wall of secondary, tertiary and cystic follicles. IGF‐I immunoreactivity was strong in the granulosa cell layer (GC), moderate in the theca interna (TI) and mild in the theca externa (TE) of the normal follicles. There was severe reduction of the labelling to IGF‐I in the GC of the follicular and luteinized cysts. In the normal follicles, the reactivity for IGF‐II was very similar to pattern noted in IGF‐I. There was reduction of the IHCSAs in the GC of the follicular and luteinized cysts, but the decrease was not significant. The staining of the IGF‐II in the TI and TE of the cysts was increased, in comparison with normal follicles. The IHCSAs for VEGF were higher in the GC and TE of the normal follicles in contrast to TI, but this difference was noted only in the tertiary follicle. The VEGF reactivity increased in the GC of the cysts, in relation to normal follicles. The results of the current study show that the formation of ovarian cysts in sows is associated with alterations in the immunohistochemical expression of some growth factors.  相似文献

A recently established Eragrostis curvula pasture 1,1 ha in size at Hennops River in the Transvaal Highveld was contaminated from 6 October 1976 until 20 May 1977 by 30 weaned Merinos, each infested with 7 000 infective larvae of H. contortus. On 2 November 1976 3 groups of weaned Merinos and again on 10 January 1977 a further group of Merinos were infested with 40 000 infective larvae of Trichostrongylus axei. From 19 November a single group of sheep, predosed with T. axei, and a control group grazed with the seeders for 8 weeks. After 6 weeks another group of sheep dosed with T. axei grazed with them, thus ensuring a 2-week overlap. This continued until autumn, when the last groups were removed. Efficacy against challenge reached Class C (greater than 50% effective against total worm burdens of H. contortus in greater than 50% of sheep) in early summer and autumn, but only reached significant levels of either P less than 0,01 or P less than 0,05 in summer. Peak worm burdens in controls were recorded in early autumn.  相似文献

Sheep grazed on natural pastures heavily infested with infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Sixty-eight weaned Merinos were divided into 6 groups on Day 0 (23 November 1977), and on Day +14 (7 December) 79 Merinos were divided into 7 groups. There were 2 groups of undosed controls and other groups were either dosed with infective larvae of Trichostrongylus axei (bovine strain) only on Days 0 and +14, or in combination with H. contortus, or with subsequent doses of H. contortus, 28 days later. One group (Group 12) was dosed with T. axei and treated with a subcutaneous injection of di-iodonitrophenol (DNP) on Day +14. With the exception of 2 sheep, the sheep of the first 6 groups survived until slaughter in March and April 1978, while many sheep (43) of the latter 7 groups died or were killed in extremis from March-May. T. axei dosed on 23 November (Day 0) protected Group 2 by greater than 50% in greater than 50% of sheep. In the latter 7 groups the best results were achieved when DNP was combined with predosing with T. axei. The poor results were probably due either to delayed predosing with T. axei or a massive challenge in the wettest summer on record.  相似文献

Cross-neutralization studies showed that 3 different isolates of herpesvirus ovis from cell cultures derived from the lungs of sheep suffering from jaagsiekte were not only identical but were also related to similar isolate made in Scotland. No relationship, however, could be established between herpesvirus ovis and common bovine or equine herpesviruses. Antibodies to herpesvirus ovis were present in roughly 70% of all animals tested and no evidence was obtained for the involvement of the virus in the aetiology of jaagsiekte. On the other hand, the absence of antibodies in sheep sera from Iceland as well as the other data obtained in this study did not exclude involvement of the virus in jaagsiekte.  相似文献

Ticks were collected over a period of 13 months, at approximately fortnightly intervals, from 6 Africaner oxen kept on the farm Nylsvley in the Naboomspruit District. The 8 species of Ixodidae collected were, in order of abundance, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, R. evertsi evertsi, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, H. truncatum, Amblyomma hebraeum, R. simus, Boophilus decoloratus and Ixodes cavipalpus. The relative abundance of adult ticks of these species, their predilection feeding sites and seasonal fluctuations in numbers are discussed.  相似文献

A 10-year-old, crossbreed dog was presented with a history of severe lethargy, pyrexia and inappetence of several days' duration. Clinical examination revealed pallor of the mucous membranes, petechiae, generalised lymphadenopathy and effusions in multiple joints. Laboratory evaluation showed severe anaemia and thrombocytopenia, with positive in-saline agglutination and the presence of antiplatelet antibodies. The DNA of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, an endemic granulocytic rickettsial parasite, was detected by PCR. A poor response to doxycycline and immunosuppressive therapy with corticosteroids was seen. Euthanasia was performed after the development of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Postmortem examination demonstrated changes consistent with the development of disseminated intravascular coagulation and infection with granulocytic ehrlichiosis. This case documents the presence of canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis caused by A phagocytophilum in the U.K., and highlights the range of clinical signs and clinicopathological abnormalities that may be observed in infected dogs.  相似文献
