Objective —To determine the accuracy of three indirect blood pressure monitoring techniques (oscillometric technique [OS], Doppler [DOP], and optical plethysmography [OP] [blood pressure determined with a pulse oximeter waveform]) when compared with direct arterial pressure measurement in cats. Study Design —Prospective study. Animal Population —Eight healthy (five female, three male), domestic short-hair cats, weighing 3.5 ± 0.8 kg Methods —Cats were anesthetized with isoflurane. The inspired concentration of isoflurane was adjusted to produce mild hypotension (80 to 100 mm Hg direct systolic), moderate hypotension (60 to 80 mm Hg direct systolic), and severe hypotension (<60 mm Hg direct systolic). Indirect pressure measurements were obtained from the thoracic limb and compared with concurrent direct measurement using regression analysis and a modification of Bland and Altman's technique. Results —All three techniques underestimated systolic pressure. OS produced the best prediction of systolic pressure with a bias ± precision of -15.9 ± 8.1 mm Hg. DOP and OP were relatively inaccurate with a bias ± precision of -25 ± 7.4 mm Hg and -25 ± 7.5 mm Hg. All three techniques correlated well with direct pressure with r values of 0.81, 0.88, and 0.88 for OS, DOP, and OP. DOP and OP provided an accurate prediction of direct mean arterial pressure with a bias ± precision of -0.8 ± 6 mm Hg and 0.6 ± 5.5 mm Hg. Correlation was good between DOP and mean arterial pressure with r = 0.89. Correlation was also good between OP and mean arterial pressure with r = 0.90. Conclusions —OS provided the most accurate prediction of direct systolic pressure. DOP and OP provided a good prediction of mean arterial pressure in the cat. Clinical Relevance —All three of these techniques are useful for detecting trends. Direct monitoring of blood pressure should be considered if accurate blood pressure measurement is required.  相似文献

Histomorphometric analysis of bone ingrowth into a porous-coated acetabular component was evaluated in a canine model. A total of nine prostheses were evaluated, 3 at 6 months, 3 at 12 months, and 3 at 24 months after implantation. All implants were grossly stable at the time of retrieval. The mean percentage of bone ingrowth was 12% at 6 months, 24% at 12 months, and 24% at 24 months. Narrow radiolucent lines noted on microradiographs were more evident at the 6 month time period than at the 12 or 24 month time periods. Bone ingrowth into a porous-coated acetabular component in a weight-bearing model may continue beyond the 6 month time period, and early evaluation of bone ingrowth may underestimate final bone ingrowth.  相似文献

Knowledge of weed population dynamics is crucial for designing effective weed management practises. A field experiment was carried out at Torre Marimon (near Barcelona, north‐eastern Spain) in 2006 and 2007 in order to study the effects of the seedling emergence time on Digitaria sanguinalis fitness. Three and four cohorts were monitored in 2006 and 2007, respectively. In 2007, the seedling density was fourfold greater than in 2006. At the end of the growing season, no statistically significant differences in survival were detected among the cohorts in 2006 (the mean survival rate was 88%); in contrast, in 2007, individual survival varied depending on the cohort, ranging from 25–88%. The reproductive traits and seed production were significantly influenced by the emergence time. In the cohorts that emerged very close in time, the individuals of the first cohort on average had more than threefold the amount of seed production than those of the last cohort. However, not all the surviving individuals were able to reproduce because they were infected by the smut, Ustilago syntherismae.  相似文献

Experiments to determine the residual plasma concentrations of phenylbutazone and its metabolites found in horses racing on a 'no-race day medication' or 24-h rule were carried out. One dosing schedule (oral-i.v.) consisted of 8.8 mg/kg (4 g/1000 lbs) orally for 3 days, followed by 4.4 mg/kg (2 g/1000 lbs) intravenously on day 4. A second schedule consisted of 4.4 mg/kg i.v. for 4 days. The experiments were carried out in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses at pasture, half-bred horses at pasture, and in Thoroughbred horses in training. After administering the i.v. schedule for 4 days to Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses at pasture, the mean plasma concentrations of phenylbutazone increased from 0.77 microgram/ml on day 2 to 2.5 micrograms/ml on day 5. The shape of the frequency distribution of these populations was log-normal. These data are consistent with one horse in 1,000 yielding a plasma level of 8.07 micrograms/ml on day 5. After administration of the oral-i.v. schedule to Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses at pasture, the mean plasma concentrations of phenylbutazone were 3.4 micrograms/ml on day 2 and 3.5 micrograms/ml on day 5. The range on day 5 was from 1.4 to 8.98 micrograms/ml and the frequency distribution was log-normal. These data are consistent with one horse in 1000 having a plasma level of 15.8 micrograms/ml on day 5. In a final experiment, the oral dosing schedule was administered to 62 Thoroughbred horses in training. Plasma concentrations on day 5 in these horses averaged 5.3 micrograms/ml. The range was from 1.3 to 13.6 micrograms/ml and the frequency distribution was log-normal. Statistical projection of these values suggests that following this oral dosing schedule in racing horses about one horse in 1000 will yield a plasma level of 23.5 micrograms/ml of phenylbutazone 24 h after the last dose.  相似文献

Juvenile marine growth (SW1) of salmon and a new temperature change (TC) index were evaluated as ecosystem indicators and predictors for the post age‐0 year class strength (YCS) of groundfish in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and eastern Bering Sea (EBS). Our hypothesis was that SW1, as measured on the scales of adult Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), is a proxy for ocean productivity on the continental shelf, a rearing area for young salmon and groundfish. Less negative TC index values are the result of a cool late summer followed by a warm spring, conditions favorable for groundfish YCS. In the GOA, SW1 was a positive predictor of age‐1 pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), but not age‐2 sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) YCS, indicating that the growth of the Karluk River sockeye salmon that enter Shelikof Strait is a proxy for ocean conditions experienced by age‐0 pollock. Contrary to our hypotheses, the TC index was a negative predictor of GOA pollock YCS; and the SW1 a negative predictor of EBS pollock and cod YCS since the 1980s. Recent fisheries oceanography survey results provide insight into possible mechanisms to support the inverse SW1 and YCS relationship. For the EBS, the TC index was a significant positive predictor for pollock and cod YCS, supporting the hypothesis that a cool late summer followed by a warm spring maximizes the over‐wintering survival of pollock and cod (Gadus macrocephalus), especially since the 1980s. The TC and SW1 index showed value for the assessment of pollock and cod, but not sablefish.  相似文献

In two aged Basenji bitches, the lateral laryngeal saccules were absent or reduced and the laryngeal recesses (ventricles of Morgagni) were shallow compared with those of other dogs. No other significant differences were discovered. It is not yet established whether or not these anatomical features are directly related to barklessness in these dogs. Nine cats with oral squamous cell carcinoma were treated with an accelerated radiation protocol (14 fractions of 3.5 Gy in 9 days). Radiation was administered twice daily with a 6hour break between treatments. Median overall survival was 86 +/- 110 days. Median survival for cats with a partial response (n=6) was 60 +/- 7 days, while median survival for cats with a complete response (n=3) was 298 +/- 187 days (P = 0.0639). The accelerated protocol was well tolerated and toxicity in the early and late period was manageable in all cats. Further modification of the protocol is warranted to extend survival.  相似文献

A survey of plasma and urinary concentrations of phenylbutazone and its metabolites in thoroughbred horses racing in Kentucky was carried out. Post-race blood samples from more than 200 horses running at Latonia Racetrack and Keeneland in the Spring of 1983 were analysed. The modal plasma concentration of phenylbutazone was between 1 and 2 micrograms/ml, the mean concentration was 3.5 micrograms/ml and the range was up to 15 micrograms/ml. Oxyphenbutazone had a modal plasma concentration between 1 and 2 micrograms/ml, a mean concentration of 2.07 micrograms/ml and a range of up to 13 micrograms/ml. gamma OH-phenylbutazone had a modal plasma concentration of less than 1 microgram/ml, a mean level of 1.39 micrograms/ml and a range of up to 7.32 micrograms/ml. All plasma concentration frequency distributions were well fitted by log normal distributions. Urinary concentrations of phenylbutazone yielded modal concentrations of less than 1 microgram/ml, a mean urinary concentration of 2.9 micrograms/ml, with a range of up to 30.5 micrograms/ml. This population fitted a log-normal distribution. For oxyphenbutazone the modal concentration was less than 3 micrograms/ml, the mean concentration was 15.26 micrograms/ml, with a range to 81.5 micrograms/ml. The frequency distribution of these samples was apparently bimodal. For gamma OH-phenylbutazone, the modal concentration was less than 4 micrograms/ml, the mean concentration 21.23 micrograms/ml, with a range of up to 122 micrograms/ml. The population frequency distribution for gamma OH-phenylbutazone was indeterminate. Analysis of the pH of these post-race urine samples showed a bimodal frequency distribution. The pH values observed ranged from 4.9 to 8.7, with peaks at about pH 5.25 and 7.25. This bimodal pattern of urinary pH values is consistent with observations made in England and Japan. Urinary pH influenced the concentrations of phenylbutazone, oxyphenbutazone and gamma OH-phenylbutazone found in the urine samples. The concentration of these metabolites found in alkaline urines were from 32 to 225 times greater than those found in acidic urines. Plasma concentrations of phenylbutazone and its metabolites, however, were unaffected by urinary pH. In interlaboratory experiments, horses running at Hollywood Park were dosed with phenylbutazone at about 2 g/1000 lbs 24 and 48 h before racing, and a mean dose of 0.6 g/1000 lbs at 72 h prior to racing. Post-race plasma samples from these horses showed phenylbutazone concentrations ranging from 0.44 to 9.97 micrograms/ml, with a mean concentration of 4.09 micrograms/ml.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Sheep given a liquid diet low in calcium and magnesium by infusion directly into the abomasum developed concurrent hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia, with plasma concentrations of calcium and magnesium decreasing to 2.0 and 0.4 mmol/l respectively. Treatment of these hypomagnesaemic sheep with 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2 D3) increased the plasma calcium, magnesium and phosphorus concentrations with plasma calcium increasing to 2.5 mmol/l and plasma magnesium to 0.6 mmol/l. Plasma magnesium increased despite a small but significant increase in the daily excretion of magnesium in the urine, and the amount of magnesium derived from either bone and/or intestine must have been greater than the amount lost in the urine. Since in other experiments we have demonstrated that plasma calcium remains within the normal range when a liquid diet adequate in magnesium but low in calcium is infused, these results imply that either synthesis of and/or end organ response to 1,25(OH2) D3 is impaired in magnesium deficient sheep.  相似文献
