Nitrogen fixing and non-N2 fixing legumes such as Gliricidia speium and Senna siamea have been used in alley cropping systems for soil improvement and source of N for food crops. However their establishments could be limited by P and moisture deficiencies in degraded soils. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can help to overcome these deficiencies. We examined the effects of a vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus, Glomus deserticola, on the performance of sole hedgerow trees of Gliricidia sepium and Senna siamea and their mixtures (interplanted) in a fallowed alley cropping experiment on a degraded Alfisol in southwestern Nigeria. Percentage root infection by VAM fungi was higher in inoculated plants than in uninoculated ones irrespective of whether they were interplanted or non-interplanted. Inoculation with G. deserticola increased dry matter accumulation and nutrient uptake (N. P, Mg and K) but there was no significant interaction between mycorrhizal inoculation and interplanting for growth and nutrient uptake except for the uptake of P, Mg and K in G. sepium. Inoculation with G. deserticola reduced leaf shedding of G. sepium by 50% but did not have the same effect for S. siamea. For both tree species inoculated plants extracted more water from 0–30 cm depth than the uninoculated ones.  相似文献

Summary The level of Azospirillum brasilense strain Cd colonization in the rhizosphere of some vegetables was 104–105 colony-forming units (CFU) per root of one plant in 2-week-old plants inoculated with 5 × 108 Azospirillum cells. Significant increases in root length (35%) and in top (90%) and root (50%) dry weight and total leaf area (90%) were observed in 18-day-old inoculated tomato plants compared with non-inoculated controls. An inoculum concentration of 1 × 108 to 5 × 108 CFU/ml stimulated the appearance of root hairs. Large numbers of bacteria (1 × 109 CFU/ml) caused asymmetrical growth of the root tip. In a petri dish system, Azospirillum (1 × 108 CFU/ml) increased root dry weight (150%), protein content (20%), respiration rate per root (70%) and the specific activity of malate dehydrogenase (45%–65%) over non-inoculated controls. The specific respiration rate, expressed as micromol of O2 per minute per milligram of dry weight of roots, was significantly lower in inoculated roots, suggesting that less energy was spent for accumulation of more dry material.  相似文献

Under the controlled conditions of the greenhouse and by varying some biotic and abiotic factors, we tried to identify some of the factors critical to obtain successful Azospirillum inoculation. Spring wheat and grain maize were inoculated with different concentrations of the wild type strains A. brasilense Sp245 and A. irakense KBC1, and grown in a substrate with varying concentrations of organic matter (OM) and N fertiliser. The inoculum concentration was one of the factors that influenced most the outcome of an inoculation experiment on wheat, with lower inoculum concentrations (105-106 cfu plant-1) stimulating root development and plant dry weight and higher inoculum concentrations (107-108 cfu plant-1) having no effect or sometimes even inhibiting root development. The effect of inoculation was most pronounced at low to intermediate N fertilisation levels, while the OM content of the substrate had no effect. Inoculation was found to affect early plant and root development, plant and root dry weight, grain yield and the N-uptake efficiency of plants. However, inoculation did not change the N concentration in plants or grains. In addition, a difference in the ability of both strains to stimulate plant growth and N uptake of wheat and maize was observed, with A. brasilense Sp245 having most effect on spring wheat and A. irakense KBC1 being more effective on grain maize. The significance of the obtained results for agriculture is discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes a study on the oestrous and ovarian activity and responses to prostaglandin F2 (PGF2) administration and artificial insemination in zebu heifers.Four cycling heifers were artificially infected with 5×106 Trypanosoma vivax organisms. Two heifers served as controls. Two injections of PGF2 were given 11 days apart, commencing at the peak of parasitaemia in the infected animals, followed by artificial insemination 72 and 96 h after the second administration of PGF2. Sera were analysed for progesterone by radioimmunoassay, while ovarian activity and oestrus were determined by rectal palpation and visual observation, respectively. All the infected heifers developed the clinical disease. All control and infected heifers had progesterone profiles consistent with luteolysis and the occurrence of oestrus following the second administration of PGF2. Progesterone levels did not return to normal luteal values in infected animals, however, whilst they did so in control animals. No control or infected heifers became pregnant.The findings suggest that PGF2 will induce a non- fertile oestrus in zebu heifers acutely infected with T. vivax. Re-ovulation is also inhibited within 22 days in a majority of infected animals.  相似文献

 The effects of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense Cd on root morphology and growth of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were studied under different growth systems and water regimes. The root systems were evaluated by image analysis. In a PVC-tube growth system, inoculation with A. brasilense at 107 colony forming units (CFU) ml–1 increased root length, root projection area, specific root length (m g–1) and specific root area (cm2 g–1), as compared with non-inoculated controls, resulting in root systems with longer and thinner roots. Water stress induced similar root responses to those observed after inoculation with A. brasilense. No increase in plant biomass was observed in inoculated plants, suggesting that under the tested growth conditions, a relatively larger amount of resources is required for the maintenance of the thinner roots. In water-stressed potted plants, the effect of A. brasilense on tap root length was inoculum-concentration dependent. At 107 CFU ml–1 this effect was significant as compared to non-inoculated controls. In a pouch system without water stress, inoculation with A. brasilense at a concentration of 105–107 CFU ml–1 2 days after germination resulted initially (2 days after inoculation) in an increase in root length (95%) and root fresh weight (66%), but reduced root diameter (20%), compared to controls. At this early stage of growth the distribution of root length among the different root diameter classes changed: the thinner-root classes had the largest proportion of longer roots. Pseudomonas tomato, the causal agent of bacterial speck of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), was isolated on King B medium supplemented with penicillin and cycloheximide. An inoculum concentration of 104-105 colony-forming units per ml was used to obtain typical symptoms. Wounding of leaves by rubbing them with carborundum powder, or spraying with diluted wax solvent, significantly increased disease incidence. The best inoculation was obtained by subjecting the plants to 40°C for 30 min to 3 h or by incubating them for 24 h under mist prior to inoculation. The physiological age of the plants did not affect disease development. The bacteria survived in and were reisolated from soils, commercial seeds and plants after periods varying from 2 months to one year.  相似文献
