The enteric function of four cats that had undergone subtotal colectomy for megacolon was compared with that of four normal cats. All cats were fed the same diet before and during the study. History, physical condition, body weight, blood chemistry panel, fasting and postprandial serum bile acids, serum cobalamin concentration, serum folate concentration, fecal weight, fecal water content, fecal fat content, fecal osmolality and electrolyte concentration, quantitative anaerobic fecal bacterial culture, partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, breath hydrogen concentration, urinary calcium, phosphorus and electrolyte concentrations, and abdominal radiographic examination with air contrast studies (pneumocolon) were examined. The four cats treated surgically were healthy and thriving and, in general, enteric function was similar to the controls. Bowel movements occurred only slightly more frequently with no significant differences in fecal volume or water content. Serum cobalamin concentrations were significantly higher in cats treated surgically. Fecal sodium concentrations were high and fecal potassium concentrations were low. Results of this study did not show any significant subclinical evidence of abnormal bowel function in cats after subtotal colectomy.  相似文献

Experiments in coherent magnetic resonance, microwave, and optical spectroscopy control quantum-mechanical ensembles by guiding them from initial states toward target states by unitary transformation. Often, the coherences detected as signals are represented by a non-Hermitian operator. Hence, spectroscopic experiments, such as those used in nuclear magnetic resonance, correspond to unitary transformations between operators that in general are not Hermitian. A gradient-based systematic procedure for optimizing these transformations is described that finds the largest projection of a transformed initial operator onto the target operator and, thus, the maximum spectroscopic signal. This method can also be used in applied mathematics and control theory.  相似文献

Studies were conducted with juvenile (28 g) Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) fed fish meal (FM) based diets with partial (0%, 25%, 50% and 75%) or total (100%) replacement of FM with freeze‐dried krill (FDK). Addition of dietary FDK significantly stimulated feeding activity in both species and resulted in higher feed consumption and intakes of digestible protein (DP) and energy (DE). This is a significant finding on the feed attractant properties of FDK because it occurred despite having 2–4 MJ kg?1 higher levels of DE in the FDK diets which could have had an intake suppression effect. In addition, it indicates that the soluble protein fraction of krill thought to be responsible for its attractant properties and is routinely lost or greatly reduced during commercial processing of krill meals, is retained by freeze‐drying. Supplementation of FDK significantly improved growth rates, digestibility and nutrient utilization. Levels exceeding 25–50% FM replacement, however, generally did not significantly increase growth performance or nutrient utilization. In addition, feed formulations with high FDK (>75% replacement) are likely to be cost‐prohibitive as long as the market price remains higher than FM.  相似文献

Copepod oil (CO) from the marine zooplankton, Calanus finmarchicus, is a potential alternative to fish oils (FOs) for inclusion in aquafeeds. The oil is composed mainly of wax esters (WE) containing high levels of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty alcohols that are poorly digested by fish at low temperatures. Consequently, tissue lipid compositions may be adversely affected in salmon‐fed CO at low temperatures. This study examined the lipid and FA compositions of muscle and liver of Atlantic salmon reared at two temperatures (3 and 12 °C) and fed diets containing either FO or CO, supplying 50% of dietary lipid as WE, at two fat levels (~330 g kg?1, high; ~180 g kg?1, low). Fish were acclimatized to rearing temperature for 1 month and then fed one of four diets: high‐fat fish oil (HFFO), high‐fat Calanus oil (HFCO), low‐fat fish oil (LFFO) and low‐fat Calanus oil (LFCO). The fish were grown to produce an approximate doubling of initial weight at harvest (220 days at 3 °C and 67 days at 12 °C), and lipid content, lipid class composition and FA composition of liver and muscle were determined. The differences in tissue lipid composition between dietary groups were relatively small. The majority of FA in triacylglycerols (TAG) in both tissues were monounsaturated, and their levels were generally higher at 3 °C than 12 °C. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly (n‐3) PUFA, predominated in the polar lipids, and their level was not significantly affected by temperature. The PUFA content of TAG was highest (~26%) in the muscle of fish fed the HFCO diet at both temperatures. Tissue levels of SFAs were lower in fish‐fed diets containing HFCO than those fed HFFO, LFFO or LFCO, particularly at 3 °C. The results are consistent with Atlantic salmon being able to incorporate both the FA and fatty alcohol components of WE into tissue lipids but, overall, the effects of environmental temperature on tissue lipids were more pronounced in fish fed the CO diets than FO diets.  相似文献

Previous studies had shown that wax ester‐rich lipid extracted from calanoid copepods could be a useful alternative to fish oil as a provider of long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in diets for use in salmon aquaculture. Effective utilization of wax ester requires digestion and metabolism in the intestine with the fatty alcohol component being oxidized to fatty acid in intestinal cells through the combined activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). We studied wax ester utilization in Atlantic salmon using a candidate gene approach, focusing on ADH and ALDH as sequence information was available for these genes, including fish sequences, facilitating isolation of the cDNAs. Here, we report on the isolation and cloning of full‐length cDNAs for ADH3 and ALDH3a2 genes from salmon intestinal tissue. Functional characterization by heterologous expression in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, showed the products of these cDNAs had long‐chain ADH and ALDH enzyme activities. Thus, ADH3 was capable of oxidizing long‐chain fatty alcohol, and ALDH3a2 was capable of oxidizing long‐chain fatty aldehyde to the corresponding fatty acid. The genes were highly expressed in intestinal tissue, particularly pyloric caeca, but their expression was not increased in salmon fed dietary copepod oil in comparison to fish fed fish oil.  相似文献

Abstract An epidemiological longitudinal study comprised information obtained from 124 randomly selected Norwegian sea-sites housing post-molts of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Information on crude cumulative mortality, fish characteristics and farm factors was gathered by the veterinary practitioners servicing the farms. The observation period lasted from the time of sea transfer of the smolts in the spring until 1 October 1991. On average, 116480 smolts were transferred to each sea-site. The mean crude cumulative mortality of post-smolts during the period concerned was 16.8%. The cumulative farm-level incidence was 54.0% for furunculosis, 39.5% for infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) and 10.5% for vibriosis. Occurrence of any of these specific infectious diseases in the post-smolt was significantly associated with mortality. The risk of furunculosis was significantly related to the location of the sea site. Mixing of smolt from many freshwater hatcheries in the sea farm increased the risk of IPN significantly. In addition, the risk of IPN was related to age of site and geographic location. The mean cumulative mortality in 1-year-old smolt groups was 17.5%, significantly greater than in two-year-old fish (7.9%). In addition, the method used to transport fish from the freshwater hatchery to the sea site was significantly associated with mortality. Neither the weight of smolts at sea transfer nor the date of transfer were significantly related to mortality.  相似文献

The substitution of fish oil with wax ester‐rich calanoid copepod‐derived oil in diets for carnivorous fish, such as Atlantic salmon, has previously indicated lower lipid digestibility. This suggests that the fatty alcohols (FAlc) present in wax esters may be a poorer substrate for intestinal enzymes than the fatty acids (FA) in triacylglycerol (TAG), the major lipid in fish oil. The hypothesis tested was that the possible lower utilization of dietary FAlc by salmon enterocytes is at the level of uptake and that subsequent intracellular metabolism was identical to that of FA. A dual‐labelled FAlc–FA metabolism assay was employed to determine simultaneous FAlc and FA uptake and relative utilization in enterocytes isolated from pyloric caeca of Atlantic salmon fed either a diet supplemented with fish oil or wax ester‐rich Calanus oil. The diets were fed for 10 weeks before caecal enterocytes from each dietary group were isolated and incubated with equimolar mixtures of either [1‐14C]16:0 FA and [9,10(n)‐3H]16:0 FAlc, or [1‐14C]18:1n‐9 FA and [9,10(n)‐3H] 18:1n‐9 FAlc. Uptake was measured after 2 h with relative utilization of labelled FAlc and FA calculated as a percentage of uptakes. Differences in uptake were observed, with FA showing higher uptake than FAlc, and 18:1 chains a higher uptake than 16:0. A proportion of unesterified FAlc was possibly recovered in the cells, but the majority of FAlc was recovered in lipid classes such as TAG and phospholipids indicating substantial conversion of FAlc to FA followed by esterification. However, incorporation of FA and FAlc into esterified lipids was higher when derived from FA than from FAlc. Twenty‐five to fifty percentage of the absorbed 16:0 FA was recovered in TAG fraction of the enterocytes compared with 15–75% of 18:1 FA. Twenty to thirty percentage of the absorbed 16:0 FA was recovered in the phosphatidylcholine fraction of the enterocytes compared with only 5–15% of the 18:1 FA. Less than 15% of the fatty chains taken up by the cells were used for energy production, with significantly higher oxidation of 18:1 in enterocytes from fish fed the fish oil diet compared with the Calanus oil diet. However, overall, dietary copepod oil had little effect on FAlc and FA metabolism. Metabolic modification by elongation and/or desaturation was generally low at 1–5% of the uptake. We conclude that our hypothesis was generally proved in that the uptake of FAlc by salmon enterocytes was lower than the uptake of FA and that subsequent intracellular metabolism of FAlc was similar to that of FA. However, unesterified FAlc was possibly recovered in the cells suggesting that the conversion to FA may not be concomitant with uptake.  相似文献

The number of research institutions using calves and sheep as models for open heart surgical procedures is increasing. The Artificial Heart Laboratory of the University of Utah has developed an effective protocol for thoracic procedures in these animals. Routine barbiturate induction and maintenance with fluothane and a pressure-regulated ventilator have minimized anesthetic problems. A membrane oxygenator with blood flows of 50 to 75 ml/kg body weight/min. seems to give adequate circulatory support during heart-lung bypass. Although animals implanted with total artificial hearts do not have problems with arrhythmias, changes in pulmonary function and peripheral vascular tone can alter their cardiac performance. The judicious use of ventilatory support and specific vasoactive drugs can significantly improve the animal's intraoperative blood pressure and postoperative arterial gases. A summary of the techniques and drugs which were used successfully in 187 of 189 animals during a 2 year period are presented.  相似文献
