Fatal encephalitozoonosis in two koalas

Two young koalas from a fauna park, recently out of the pouch and approximately 6 months old, were found dead with no previous clinical signs or gross lesions. On histopathological examination, large numbers of spores consistent with a microsporidian organism were present intracellularly within the small intestinal mucosa. Electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction studies (sequencing the 5' end of the SSU RNA gene) identified the organism as Encephalitozoon intestinalis with 100% homology with those of previously reported human isolates. This is believed to be the first report of this organism in a marsupial.

Retracted: Effect of Post‐Thaw Storage Time on Motility and Fertility of Cryopreserved Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso) Sperm

The aim of this study was to test the influence of post ‐ thaw storage time on the duration of sperm motility, percentage of motile sperm, and fertilization and hatching rates of fresh sperm and sperm stored for 0, 30 and 60 min at 4°C post‐thawing. After being frozen in liquid nitrogen and then thawed, the percentage of motile sperm and duration of motility were not affected by 30 min of storage at 4°C, whereas a significant decline in these parameters was observed after 60 min of storage. Similarly, fertilization and hatching rates were significantly affected within 60 min of storage at 4°C, and the fertility of frozen‐thawed sperm was significantly lower than that of fresh sperm. We conclude that cryopreserved sperm of beluga sturgeon could be stored for 30 min without the loss of sperm quality. This described procedure for beluga sturgeon cryopreservation is reliable and efficient and therefore can be recommended for hatchery practice after scaling up this technique.     

Rhodococcus equi-associated osteomyelitis in foals

Two cases of Rhodococcus equl infection in foals are described, in which osteomyelitis was a feature. Because rhodococcal infection is usually low grade and chronic, and because the signs of early metaphysitis can be subtle, any articular or periarticular swelling in a foal from a farm with a history of rhodococcosis should be strongly suspected to be associated with R equl until proven otherwise.     

Changes in cell-mediated immune responses after experimentally-induced anaphylaxis in dogs.

Experimentally-induced type 1 hypersensitivities were induced in normal dogs to either ovalbumin or Ascaris antigen. In vitro and in vivo cell-mediated immune responses were measured before sensitization and again at 1 and 6 days after induction of anaphylaxis by intravenous challenge with antigen. Histamine-modulated lymphocyte functions, such as histamine-induced suppression, histamine co-mitogen induced blastogenesis and the in vivo cutaneous responses to intradermally injected mitogens decreased post anaphylaxis. Spontaneous suppression of the autologous mixed-lymphocyte reaction increased post anaphylaxis. Lymphocyte blastogenic response to Concanavalin A (Con A) decreased at 6 (but not at 1) days post anaphylaxis probably due to a mediator other than histamine. Blastogenesis of 24 h preincubated cells by suboptimal concentration of Con A, declined post anaphylaxis, but Con A-induced suppression was not significantly altered. Dogs with atopic dermatitis have some altered cell-mediated immune responses. Altered histamine-induced and spontaneous suppression, histamine suppression of mitogenesis and decreased contact sensitivity observed in this experimental type 1 hypersensitivity mimicked that of atopic dogs. Increased cutaneous response to mitogens observed in atopic dogs was not reproduced in the type 1 hypersensitive dogs. These findings suggest some of the altered cell-mediated immune functions observed in dogs with atopic dermatitis result from type 1 hypersensitivity. The other abnormalities may be intrinsic to the atopic state.
