This study was the first to examine the seroprevalence of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) within a commercial egg layer population. Serum samples collected from egg production companies were examined by serum plate agglutination test (SPAT) and outer membrane protein-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results show that 90% of layer flocks were positive by SPAT and 100% by ELISA. Of the pullet flocks examined, 43% and 52% were positive by SPAT and ELISA, respectively. Our study indicates that the prevalence of ORT antibody is high in the commercial layer population, suggesting that this respiratory pathogen can easily spread through multiple-age layer farms from older flocks to newly housed pullet flocks. 相似文献
Isolates of a soil Pseudoimonas, as well as other soil bacteria, showed a different sensitivity towards NO?2 when grown under aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The tolerance to NO?2 was increased in the presence of O2: for instance, a concentration of of NO?2-N proved to be toxic to a Pseudomonas sp. under anaerobic conditions, whereas over were needed aerobically to suppress its growth completely. The addition of NO?3 as an electron acceptor for anaerobic respiration did not overcome the inhibitive effect of NO?3. The pH range, at which NO?2 was utilized anaerobically, was narrowed with increasing NO?2 concentration (pH 6.8–8.8 at of NO?2-N and 7.4–8.5 and of NO?2-N).Tolerance to nitrite varied considerably among the bacteria tested. Each species was able to overcome the inhibitory effect of NO?2 up to a certain concentration, while the length of the lag phase was related to NO?2 concentration. 相似文献
An index of the buffering capacity for phosphate of a group of soils was obtained by measuring adsorption of phosphate from dilute solutions of calcium chloride. The effect of buffering capacity on the amount of phosphate initially displaced by solutions of sodium bicarbonate and on the amount of secondary adsorption from bicarbonate was then studied. These two effects were separated using a regression procedure in which the soil: solution ratio was the independent variable.As buffering capacity increased the amount of phosphorus initially displaced decreased and the amount of secondary adsorption increased. Both these changes resulted in a decrease in the amount of phosphate in the extract. The effect of buffering capacity was greater with the Olsen method (soil : solution ratio 1 : 20; 30 min) than with the Colwell method (soil : solution ratio 1 : 100; 16 h). The relation between phosphorus extracted and buffering capacity was of a similar shape to that between effectiveness of fertilizer and buffering capacity. However, the first relation depends on the conditions of extraction and the second on the kind of plant grown and on the conditions of growth. Hence the two relations do not necessarily coincide.The effect of buffering capacity on the proportion of added phosphate initially displaced from the soil became more marked as the period of incubation prior to extraction was increased. Bicarbonate soil tests would therefore indicate that, on soils of low buffering capacity, the decrease with time in availability of applied phosphate would be smaller than on soils of high buffering capacity. An experiment was carried out on a grass/white-clover sward at North Wyke to evaluate the use of mixtures of inorganic and organic nutrient sources to simulate the nutrient effect of animal excreta, both with and without overall PK fertilizer. Grazing with sheep and the return of excreta from caged sheep both increased herbage yields, as did artificial return treatments. Artificial return treatments giving 75% of the nutrient level returned by excreta gave yields comparable with grazing. The effect of the simulated return treatments was not influenced by PK application. Grazing gave a very different botanical composition to that from the treatments in wbich natural or simulated excreta were returned to cut swards. Mixtures simulating excreta may replace the nutrient effect of the grazing animal, but not its physical effect, in some forms of grassland experimentation. Single spring dressings of N were compared with split applications over the first two growth periods of the year at ten sites in eastern England in the period 1964–67. None of the four spring periods was unusually dry and the single application of N in spring did not outyield a similar total N rate applied some before and some after the first cut. At nine out of ten sites split applications of N yielded considerably more in the second growth period than the single spring dressing. It is concluded that the split applications of N in the spring, already shown superior to single dressings under moist west country conditions, are correct for many seasons in the drier east of England. 相似文献
Monoglycerides are widely used in the baking industry because of their antistaling effects, mainly suppressing crumb firming. Commercial monoglycerides are normally prepared from hydrogenated fats, with stearate being the most common fatty acid. In a previous study, monoglycerides such as monopalmitate (C16) and monostearate (C18) had positive effects on Canadian short process bread but no improvements on sponge‐and‐dough process (SDP) bread. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of saturated monoglycerides of varying fatty acid chain length (C14–C22) on SDP breadmaking quality by using volume judgment, crumb image analysis, and texture measurements. Higher levels (1.00–1.50%) of all monoglycerides (C14, C16, and C18) significantly (P < 0.05) increased loaf volume and cell diameter. The larger cell diameter with increasing levels of these monoglycerides may have resulted from softer, more extensible dough handling properties and greater gas cell stability during baking. Addition of C16 and C18 caused the largest increase in crumb softness with increasing monoglyceride levels but showed relatively low resilience, which might be related to larger loaf volume (i.e., lower density of bread). However, addition of blended monoglycerides C14+C16 increased crumb softness and loaf volume while partially retaining resilience. It is known that land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes affect plant community assembly for decades. However, both the short- and the long-term effects of contrasting LULC change pathways on this assembly are seldom explored.
Objectives
To assess how LULC change pathways affect woody plant community parameters (i.e. species richness, diversity and evenness) and species’ presence and abundance, compared with environmental factors and neutral processes.
Methods
The study was performed in Mediterranean limestone scrublands in NE Spain. Cover of each woody species was recorded in 150 scrubland plots belonging to five LULC change pathways along the past century, identified using land-cover maps and fieldwork. For each plot, total woody and herbaceous vegetation cover, local environmental variables and geographical position were recorded. Effects of these pathways and factors on plant community parameters and on species presence and abundance were assessed, considering spatial effects potentially associated to neutral processes.
Results
Species richness and diversity were associated with LULC change pathways and elevation, while evenness was only associated with this last. Pathways and environmental variables explained similar variance in both species’ presence and cover. In general, while community parameters were affected by recent-past (1956) use, species presence and abundance were associated with far-past (pre-1900) cropping. No relevant spatial effect was detected for any studied factor.
Conclusions
Historical LULC changes and current environmental factors drive local-scale community assembly in Mediterranean scrublands to an equal extent, while contrasting time-scale effects are found at community and species level. Neutral, dispersal-based processes are found to be non-relevant.
