If they could be easily exfoliated, layered materials would become a diverse source of two-dimensional crystals whose properties would be useful in applications ranging from electronics to energy storage. We show that layered compounds such as MoS(2), WS(2), MoSe(2), MoTe(2), TaSe(2), NbSe(2), NiTe(2), BN, and Bi(2)Te(3) can be efficiently dispersed in common solvents and can be deposited as individual flakes or formed into films. Electron microscopy strongly suggests that the material is exfoliated into individual layers. By blending this material with suspensions of other nanomaterials or polymer solutions, we can prepare hybrid dispersions or composites, which can be cast into films. We show that WS(2) and MoS(2) effectively reinforce polymers, whereas WS(2)/carbon nanotube hybrid films have high conductivity, leading to promising thermoelectric properties. 相似文献

The purpose of the study, carried out in a beef processing plant, was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new prototype for steam pasteurization treatment in controlling microbiological hazards. Samples were taken by swabbing randomly selected sites before and after pasteurization and again after chilling to obtain total aerobic counts (TAC), total coliform counts (TCC), and generic Escherichia coli counts (ECC) on Petrifilm plates and to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157:H7 using standard enrichment techniques. Escherichia coli and L. monocytogenes strains were tested for various factors associated with their virulence by using colony hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined for each isolate that was potentially pathogenic to humans by using the disk-diffusion method. Mean values for TAC, TCC, and ECC were 2.18, 0.16, and 0.06 log10 CFU/cm2, respectively, before pasteurization; 1.17, 0.03, and 0.01 log10 CFU/cm2 after pasteurization; and 0.89, 0.02, and 0.01 log10 CFU/cm2 after chilling. Prevalence of L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and E. coli O157:H7 on carcasses was 0.8%, 0.0%, and 0.0%, respectively, before pasteurization; 2.6%, 0.0%, and 0.0% after pasteurization; and 3.1%, 0.1%, and 0.0% after chilling. The prevalence of E. coli containing > or = 1 virulence gene was 14.7%. More specifically, 11.88% of the isolates obtained before pasteurization, 22.2% obtained after pasteurization, and 31.2% obtained after chilling had virulence genes. All L. monocytogenes isolates tested positive for the presence of 3 major virulence factors (hlyA, inlB, and plcB). Antibiograms showed that certain isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics, some showed an intermediate sensitivity, and others were multiresistant. Overall, these results suggest that steam pasteurization is an effective means of improving safety quality of beef carcasses. However, pasteurization may indirectly contribute to the growth of some pathogenic microorganisms, such as L. monocytogenes. 相似文献

Towards the continuous improvement of its inspection system, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is developing an Establishment‐based Risk Assessment model for Hatcheries to allocate inspection resources based on the food safety risk associated with the Canadian hatcheries falling under its jurisdiction. The objectives of the current study were to identify and select critical food safety‐related risk factors that would be included in this model, with a main focus on Salmonella. A literature review was used to develop a comprehensive list of risk factors that could potentially contribute to the food safety risk attributed to Canadian hatcheries operating in all production streams (breeders, layers, broilers, turkeys, waterfowl and game birds). The development of this list used a selection process that was conducted according to the availability of data sources, the clarity of definition and the measurability of the selected risk factors. A panel of experts reviewed and adjusted the identified risk factors. A final list of 29 risk factors was generated; 20 originated from the scientific literature and nine from the expert panel. Risk factors were grouped in three clusters according to whether they pertained to the inherent risk (nine factors identified), risk mitigation (nine factors identified) or compliance of a hatchery with its preventive control plan and regulatory requirements (11 factors identified). Criteria for assessing each risk factor were defined based on common practices used in the Canadian hatchery industry. This comprehensive list of risk factors and criteria represents useful information to support the design and implementation of a Canadian risk assessment model for hatcheries, but could also be used by like‐minded food safety authorities. 相似文献

We investigated seasonal patterns of biomass and carbohydrate partitioning in relation to shoot growth phenology in two age classes of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) seedlings growing in the understory of a partially harvested forest. The high root:shoot biomass ratio and carbohydrate concentration of sugar maple are characteristic of species with truncated growth patterns (i.e., cessation of aboveground shoot growth early in the growing season), a conservative growth strategy and high shade tolerance. The low root:shoot biomass ratio and carbohydrate concentration of yellow birch are characteristic of species with continuous growth patterns, an opportunistic growth strategy and low shade tolerance. In both species, starch represented up to 95% of total nonstructural carbohydrates and was mainly found in the roots. Contrary to our hypothesis, interspecific differences in shoot growth phenology (i.e., continuous versus truncated) did not result in differences in seasonal patterns of carbohydrate partitioning. Our results help explain the niche differentiation between sugar maple and yellow birch in temperate, deciduous understory forests. 相似文献
