OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability and accuracy of a predictive rectal thermometer, an infrared auricular thermometer designed for veterinary use, and a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip for measurement of core body temperature over various temperature conditions in dogs. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 8 purpose-bred dogs. PROCEDURES: A minimum of 7 days prior to study commencement, a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip was implanted in 1 of 3 locations (interscapular, lateral aspect of shoulder, or sacral region) in each dog. For comparison with temperatures measured via rectal thermometer, infrared auricular thermometer, and microchip, core body temperature was measured via a thermistor-tipped pulmonary artery (TTPA) catheter. Hypothermia was induced during anesthesia at the time of TTPA catheter placement; on 3 occasions after placement of the catheter, hyperthermia was induced via administration of a low dose of endotoxin. Near-simultaneous duplicate temperature measurements were recorded from the TTPA catheter, the rectal thermometer, auricular thermometer, and subcutaneous microchips during hypothermia, euthermia, and hyperthermia. Reliability (variability) of temperature measurement for each device and agreement between each device measurement and core body temperature were assessed. RESULTS: Variability between duplicate near-simultaneous temperature measurements was greatest for the auricular thermometer and least for the TTPA catheter. Measurements obtained by use of the rectal thermometer were in closest agreement with core body temperature; for all other devices, temperature readings typically underestimated core body temperature. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Among the 3 methods of temperature measurement, rectal thermometry provided the most accurate estimation of core body temperature in dogs.  相似文献

A guidance aid is a device that provides guidance information to the driver rather than replacing the driver. With a camera-based guidance aid, the view seen by a forward-looking video camera is displayed on a monitor situated within the operator station of the vehicle. As the vehicle moves forward, images of the ground scroll vertically across the monitor. The rate at which the image scrolls, the image velocity, is related to the forward velocity of the vehicle, the placement of the camera (height and tilt angle), and the optical characteristics of the guidance camera. When tested with a tractor at forward velocities between 1.6 and 12.8 km/h, lateral error increased linearly as image velocity increased. Driver self-confidence decreased linearly as image velocity increased. Based on subjective feedback, drivers preferred a camera tilt angle of 20 degrees (over either 30 degrees or 40 degrees) because it yielded the greatest look-ahead distance. Statistically, a tilt angle of 30 degrees was best for a camera with a narrow field of view (narrow FOV, 20 degrees in the lateral direction). For a camera with a wide field of view (wide FOV, 39 degrees in the lateral direction), there was no statistical difference. For the narrow FOV camera, a camera height of 1.1 m yielded statistically smaller lateral errors than a camera height of 1.5 m. There was no statistical difference for the wide FOV camera. Overall, the lateral error was statistically smaller for the narrow FOV camera than for the wide FOV camera due to the difference in the lateral ratio for each camera, where the lateral ratio is the ratio of the lateral field of view of the camera to the fixed monitor width.  相似文献

In order to optimize the production of embryos under tropical conditions and to test a possible seasonal effect on embryo quality, 40 Zebu cows were superovulated during the dry season (April to May) and during the rainy season (July to August). A total of 116 (average 2.7/cow) and 83 embryos (3.5 average/cow) were obtained during the respective seasons. After classification as good, fair or poor quality, embryos were tested based on their ultrastructural differences (n = 53 dry season 16 good, 20 fair and 17 poor and n = 61 rainy season 21 good, 20 fair and 20 poor) and their degree of apoptosis using the TUNEL technique (n = 30 during the dry season and n = 55 in the rainy season). Structural characteristics determining embryo quality varied between good and fair quality embryos. No difference, however, was observed between good, fair and poor quality embryos from the two seasons. The number of TUNEL-positive cells was different among embryos (p < 0.001), being lower in labelled cells of good quality embryos regardless of the season. Fewer apoptotic cells were observed in embryos assigned in all three quality levels during the rainy season (p < 0.001). Ultrastructural evaluations confirmed the results obtained by TUNEL. Cryopreserved embryos of good (n = 25 in each season) and fair quality (n = 11 dry season; n = 17 rainy season) showed a significant decrease of TUNEL-positive cells during the rainy season (p < 0.05). Results suggest that embryos collected in the dry season have more cellular damage in contrast; embryos cryopreserved in the rainy season appeared morphologically better equipped to result in a pregnancy following transfer.  相似文献

1. As part of a programme investigating the causation of pecking damage in fowls, this experiment tested a proposal that birds may receive more feather pecks when their plumage colour contrasts with floor litter colour, because litter particles on plumage (as a consequence of dustbathing) may then have greater stimulus value. 2. Groups consisting of 7 light- and 7 dark-coloured bantams were reared from 1 to 11 weeks of age in pens with either wood shavings (light coloured, n=6) or peat (dark coloured, n=6) floor litter. 3. Feather loss from pecking commenced in the 3rd week of life and increased thereafter, but observed pecking damage scores were not consistent with the hypothesis being tested. 4. Despite many more pecks at birds being seen (over 10 weeks) in the wood shavings groups' (661 at particles on plumage, 1795 not at particles) than in peat groups (205, 787), there was no effect of litter substrate on pecking damage. The only evidence supporting the proposal was the finding that, in groups on wood shavings, significantly more pecks at particles on plumage were directed from light coloured birds towards dark ones, than from light to light, dark to light, or dark to dark. 5. Feather eating was confirmed from the presence of feather material in 2% to 15% of faecal droppings collected from each group at 11 weeks, but these proportions were not correlated with pecking damage scores. 6. The results imply that only some feather pecks/pulls were damaging and only some eaten feathers were pulled from other birds.  相似文献

In Drosophila melanogaster, the antennae, legs, genitalia, and analia make up a serially homologous set of ventral appendages that depend on different selector genes for their unique identities. The diversity among these structures implies that there is a common ground state that selector genes modify to generate these different appendage morphologies. Here we show that the ventral appendage that forms in the absence of selector gene activity is leglike but consists of only two segments along its proximo-distal axis: a proximal segment and a distal tarsus. These results raise the possibility that, during evolution, leglike appendages could have developed without selector gene activity.  相似文献
