This study compared the reproductive and growth performances of pigs before and after depopulation andrestocking after a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Japan. Data for the time period before and afterdepopulation and restocking were obtained from three farrow-to-finish farms. As a result of depopulation andrestocking, hygiene levels were improved, and common infectious diseases, such as porcine reproductive andrespiratory syndrome and Aujeszky’s disease, remained undetected on the farms. Compared with beforedepopulation, reproductive and growth performances improved after depopulation; the number of total pigs bornwas higher, the postweaning mortality rate was lower, and the age at slaughter was lower(P<0.05). In summary, depopulation and restocking improved the reproductive and growthperformances of pigs. 相似文献

Zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZPP) is a characteristic red pigment in meat products that are manufactured without the addition of a curing agent such as nitrate or nitrite. To examine the effects of impurities such as mineral components in sea salt on the formation of ZPP, we manufactured Parmatype dry-cured hams that were salted with refined salt or sea salt and examined the involvement of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the formation of ZPP. The content of ZPP was increased drastically after 40 weeks. Microscopic observation showed strong fluorescence caused by ZPP muscle fiber after 40 weeks. Conversely, heme content varied considerably during processing. ORP increased during processing. However, there was no obvious difference between ham salted with refined salt and that salted with sea salt. Therefore, it was concluded that impurities in sea salt were not involved in the formation of ZPP. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of concurrent measurement of
serum phosphorylated neurofilament heavy subunit (pNF-H) concentration and intramedullary
T2W hyperintensity in paraplegic to paraplegic dogs. Our hypothesis was that concurrent
measurement of these would provide a more accurate prediction of functional outcome in
dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH). A prospective case-control
clinical study was designed using 94 dogs with acute onset of thoracolumbar IVDH. The
association of serum pNF-H concentration, T2W hyperintensity on sagittal MRI (T2H/L2),
deep pain perception and surgical outcome were evaluated with logistic regression analysis
after three months for all 94 surgically treated dogs. Sensitivity to predict
non-ambulatory outcome was compared among pNF-H and T2H/L2 and combination of both.
Logistic regression analysis indicated that serum pNF-H concentration and T2H/L2 were
significantly correlated with surgical outcome (P<0.05); however, deep
pain perception was not (P=0.41). The results of logistic regression
analysis indicated that the odds ratios of unsuccessful long-term outcome were 2.6 for
serum pNF-H concentration, 1.9 for T2H/L2 and 2.3 for deep pain sensation. The sensitivity
and specificity to predict non-ambulatory outcome for using serum parameter pNF-H>2.6
ng/ml, using T2H/L2 value of>0.84 and using both
serum pNF-H and T2H/L2, were 95% and 75.7%, 65% and 86.5%, and 90.0% and 97.5%,
respectively. Therefore, combined measurements of serum pNF-H and T2H/L2 might be useful
for predicting long-term outcome in dogs with thoracolumbar IVDH. 相似文献

In early embryogenesis, the posteroventral foregut endoderm gives rise to the
budding endodermal organs including the liver, ventral pancreas and gallbladder during
early somitogenesis. Despite the detailed fate maps of the liver and pancreatic
progenitors in the mouse foregut endoderm, the exact location of the gallbladder
progenitors remains unclear. In this study, we performed a DiI fate-mapping analysis using
whole-embryo cultures of mouse early somite-stage embryos. Here, we show that the majority
of gallbladder progenitors in 9–11-somite-stage embryos are located in the lateral-most
domain of the foregut endoderm at the first intersomite junction level along the
anteroposterior axis. This definition of their location highlights a novel entry point to
understanding of the molecular mechanisms of initial specification of the gallbladder. 相似文献

There appears to be strong evidence supporting four major clades of placental mammals: (i) Afrotheria; (ii) Xenarthea; (iii) Euarchontoglires; and (iv) Laurasiathera. This is the first study in which the carbohydrates have been analyzed in the milks of Xenarthea. Our aim was to clarify whether the saccharides of giant anteater milk resemble those of other eutherian species, especially of the Asian elephant, which is one of the Afrotherea. We found that lactose is a dominant saccharide in this milk, as it is in that of most eutherians, and that the milk contains smaller amounts of oligosaccharides, whose structures were determined as Gal(α1‐3)Gal(β1‐4)Glc (isoglobotriose), Neu5Ac(α2‐6)Gal(β1‐4)Glc (6'‐N‐acetylneuraminyllactose), Neu5Gc(α2‐6)Gal(β1‐4)Glc (6'‐N‐glycolylneuraminyllactose), Neu5Ac(α2‐6)Gal(β1‐4)GlcNAc(β1‐3)Gal(β1‐4)Glc (LST c) and Neu5Gc(α2‐6)Gal(β1‐4)GlcNAc(β1‐3)Gal(β1‐4)Glc. This pattern of milk carbohydrates is rather close to that of the milks of other eutherian species. It is notable that the milk contained oligosaccharides with Neu5Gc residues but no oligosaccharides containing α(2‐3) linked Neu5Ac residues such as Neu5Ac(α2‐3)Gal(β1‐4)Glc. 相似文献

alpha-klotho was identified as a gene associated with premature aging-like phenotypes characterized by short lifespan. In mice, we found the molecular association of alpha-Klotho (alpha-Kl) and Na+,K+-adenosine triphosphatase (Na+,K+-ATPase) and provide evidence for an increase of abundance of Na+,K+-ATPase at the plasma membrane. Low concentrations of extracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]e) rapidly induce regulated parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion in an alpha-Kl- and Na+,K+-ATPase-dependent manner. The increased Na+ gradient created by Na+,K+-ATPase activity might drive the transepithelial transport of Ca2+ in cooperation with ion channels and transporters in the choroid plexus and the kidney. Our findings reveal fundamental roles of alpha-Kl in the regulation of calcium metabolism. 相似文献

Prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria in wildlife can reveal the actual level of
anthropological burden on the wildlife. In this study, we isolated two multiple
drug-resistant strains, GG6-2 and GG6-1-1, from 27 fresh feces of wild western lowland
gorillas in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon. Isolates were identified as
Achromobacter xylosoxidans and Providencia sp.,
respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of the following 12 drugs—ampicillin
(ABPC), cefazolin (CEZ), cefotaxime (CTX), streptomycin (SM), gentamicin (GM), kanamycin
(KM), tetracycline (TC), nalidixic acid (NA), ciprofloxacin (CPFX), colistin (CL),
chloramphenicol (CP) and trimethoprim (TMP)—were determined. Isolate GG6-2 was resistant
to all antimicrobials tested and highly resistant to CTX, SM, TC, NA and TMP. Isolate
GG6-1-1 was resistant to ABPC, CEZ, TC, CL, CP and TMP. 相似文献
