Summary. The effect of various environments on the degree of desiccation and of residues in King Edward and Majestic potatoes was studied. The higher residues frequently associated with the variety King Edward are ascribed from glasshouse experiments to greater diquat movement; they could not be accounted for by differences in uptake between the two varieties.
In glasshouse experiments, uptake was increased both by high air humidities and reduced light intensities before and after treatment. Since earlier work with cocksfoot and wheat indicated that dry soil conditions markedly increased movement, it is concluded that dull, humid air conditions associated with dry soil would be most conducive to efficient haulm desiccation and also to highest residues in the tubers. Late afternoon or evening treatment often provides thes conditions, and residues were in fact least from morning treatment.
In the field, increases in haulm desiccation were associated with reductions in residues. As they were observed only at light intensities below 5000 lux, they are unlikely to occur in normal dull weather.
Rain falling soon after spraying did not reduce the extent of haulm desiccation or diquat residues.

Objective— To report treatment of a comminuted ulnar carpal (UC) bone fracture associated with carpal instability by pancarpal arthrodesis using 2 locking compression plates (LCP).
Study Design— Case report.
Animals— A 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly.
Methods— An UC fracture and luxation of the proximal row of carpal bones was diagnosed radiographically. Pancarpal arthrodesis was performed with 2 LCP positioned dorsolaterally and dorsomedially and centered over the carpus through a single skin incision. The filly was maintained in a full limb cast for 15 days, followed by a tube cast for 14 days, and subsequently a full limb bandage with caudal splint for 21 days.
Results— Two LCP provided appropriate carpal stability resulting in a pasture sound horse 6 months after surgery. The filly was discharged from the hospital 63 days after surgery, walking well with only a slight mechanical lameness.
Conclusion— Use of 2 LCP applied on the dorsomedial and dorsolateral aspect of the carpus can provide carpal stability for pancarpal arthrodesis.
Clinical Relevance— Excellent stability of the carpal joints can be achieved with 2 LCP.

Data are presented from 15 dogs with aural haematoma. The series included six Labrador retrievers and four golden retrlevers and the mean age was 8.0 ± 3.02 years. Five dogs had evidence of pruritic skin disease and five further cases had other concurrent disease. Haematoiogy and serum biochemistry were normal in 12 and 13 of the 15 dogs, respectively. Ail dogs were Coombs' negative and serum antinuclear antibody had negative or low titres in ail the 11 cases tested. Histopathological examination of biopsies from the affected ears revealed variable degrees of erosion of auricular cartilage with fibrovascular granulation tissue filling the cartilage defects. There was minimal perichondrai inflammation. The biopsies were studied by immunohistochemlstry for deposition of lmmunoglobulln G (IgG), immunogiobulln M (IgM) and complement C3. In one dog there was basement membrane zone deposition of IgG and in another there was focal interepithellai deposition of both igG and IgM. The findings of this study do not support an autoimmune pathogenesis for canine aural haematoma, but suggest that an early immunological event may underlie the observed cartilage erosion.

The safety and diagnostic value of combined splenic fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) and needle core biopsy (NCB) is unknown. Forty‐one dogs with splenic lesions were studied prospectively. Safety was assessed in 38 dogs and no complications were encountered. Initially, clinical and anatomic pathologists reviewed each FNA and NCB sample, respectively, without knowledge of the other's results. Diagnoses were categorized as neoplastic, benign, inflammatory, normal, or nondiagnostic. The level of agreement between sampling methods was categorized as complete, partial, disagreement, or not available. Test correlation was performed in 40 dogs. Nondiagnostic results occurred in 5/40 NCB (12.5%) and no FNA samples. Neoplasia was diagnosed in 17/40 dogs (42.5%), benign changes in 20/40 dogs (50%), inflammatory disorders in 0/40 dogs, and normal 2/40 dogs (5%). One of the 40 dogs (2.5%) had a diagnosis that was equivocal for neoplasia on both tests and therefore was not categorized. Of the 35 dogs that had diagnostic samples, cytopathologic and histopathologic diagnoses agreed completely in 18/35 dogs (51.4%), partially in 3/35 dogs (8.6%), and were in disagreement in 14/35 dogs (40.0%). Pathologists collaboratively reviewed diagnoses that were in disagreement or partial agreement and altered their individual diagnoses in 6/17 dogs (35.3%) to be within partial or complete agreement, respectively. Percutaneous FNA and NCB can be performed safely in dogs with sonographic splenic changes. Results suggest that adding NCB to FNA provides complementary information in dogs with suspected splenic neoplasia. This combined protocol may improve detection of splenic neoplasia and provide neoplastic subclassification.

Isolates of Tapesia yallundae and Tapesia acuformis were subjected to Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay. Amplification products common to isolates of either species were cloned and primers were generated from each sequence for use in conventional PCR. The primer pair derived from a T. yallundae specific RAPD marker amplified a product only from DNA of T. yallundae isolates and not from DNA of a range of other fungal species associated with the stem base disease complex of cereals. Similarly, the primer pair generated from a T. acuformis -specific RAPD marker amplifed a product only from DNA of T. acuformis isolates. Quantitative assays were developed for both species of Tapesia from these primer pairs, using competitive PCR . Competitive PCR was used to determine the level of colonization of seedlings by each species in glasshouse- and field-inoculated cereal hosts and results compared to those for conventional seedling disease assessment.

Pests of arable crops tend to show a high degree of migratory activity. This is particularly so in northern Sudan where the variable rainfall produces habitats which are short-lived and unpredictable in their frequency and location. Insects whose flight activity is adapted to enable them to move on the same wind-system which produces the rains are frequently pests of the crops of these climates. Outbreaks of such pests are usually a function of the numbers which colonise the crops, and this in turn depends not only on the success of breeding in the source areas but also on increases in density which occur whilst they are airborne. The importance of the increases in airborne densities which occur within the inter-tropical discontinuity and the cold-air outflows ahead of convectional storms to pest outbreaks in the Sudan Gezira is described.

Abstract The efficacy of a topical antimicrobial-corticosteroid combination for the treatment of pyotraumatic dermatitis in dogs, was investigated. An open-ended, double-blind, randomized trial design was used. Forty dogs were divided into two vehicle-treated control groups and three treatment groups. The dogs in the respective treatment groups were treated with emulsions of either neomycin, prednisolone or a neomycin-prednisolone combination. Lesions were shaved and cleaned before treatment commenced, whereafter the allocated emulsion was applied twice daily for 7 days. Lesions were evaluated for surface area and degree of pruritus and inflammation. Skin biopsy specimens for bacterial culture and histopathological examination were taken. Staphylococcus aureus was the predominant organism isolated. The antimicrobial-corticosteroid combination emulsion resulted in the quickest recovery, followed by the antimicrobial drug alone. Prednisolone alone gave significantly poorer results. Dogs in all groups, including the control groups, recovered completely within 7 days. [Schroeder, H., Swan, G.E., Berry, W.L., Pearson, J.
