Results are given on the occurrence of sexual compatibility types of seven isolates ofBremia lactucae originating fromLactuca serriola (prickly lettuce). It is concluded that the isolates studied are heterothallic. Both compatibility types (B1 en B2) were determined, but type B2 was prevalent. Ghrelin, a novel 28-amino acid peptide with an n-octanoyl modification at Ser3, has been isolated from rat and human stomach as an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor. Here, we purified feline ghrelin and examined its possible physiological role in cats. The major active form of feline ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide octanoylated (C8:0) at Ser3; except for one amino acid residue replacement, this structure is identical to those of rat and human ghrelins. However, much structural divergence in peptide length and fatty acid modification was observed in feline ghrelin: peptides consisting of 27 or 26 amino acids lacking Gln14 and/or Arg28 were found, and the third serine residue was modified by octanoic acid (C8:0), decanoic acid (10:0), or unsaturated fatty acids (C8:1, C10:1 and C10:2). In agreement with the structural divergence, two kinds of cDNA with different lengths were isolated. Administration of synthetic rat ghrelin increased plasma growth hormone levels in cats, with a potency similar to that in rat or human. Plasma levels of ghrelin in cats increased approximately 2.5-fold after fasting. The present study indicates the existence of structural divergence in feline ghrelin and suggests that, as in other animals, ghrelin may play important roles in GH release and feeding in cats. 相似文献

Chipmunks that had been housed at 22 degrees C under a light-dark cycle of 14L:10D for at least one year were exposed to a short photoperiod (10L:14D) and low temperature to induce unseasonable hibernation. We were able to induce hibernation at any time of year and there was no significant difference in the duration of the hibernation bout, the duration of interbout euthermia and duration of bouts of torpor throughout the year; however entrance into hibernation took about 60 days in summer but only about 30 days in any other seasons. In addition, interbout euthermia predominantly occurred during the light phase in winter, whereas in spring interbout euthermia occurred equally in the light and dark phases. These results suggest that both the circadian and circannual systems are linked to hibernation in chipmunks. Subcutaneous infusion of a serotonin antagonist, para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), facilitated entrance into and interrupted hibernation in aroused and hibernating chipmunks in summer, respectively. On the other hand, opioid antagonist, naloxone, did not affect hibernation, but extended the period of interbout euthermia. These results suggest that the role of serotonin in entrance into and maintenance of hibernation in chipmunks is independent of the circannual system, and that opioid system may not be involved in hibernation in chipmunks. 相似文献

Summary A model for the isothermal transport of bound water through the cell wall of wood is developed, based on the assumption that the driving force for moisture movement is the gradient of spreading pressure , as first proposed by Babbitt (1950). This pressure is a surface phenomenon, derivable from the surface sorption theory of Dent (1977), a modification of the BET sorption theory. The force resisting moisture transport is assumed to be inversely proportional to moisture content and directly proportional to the equivalent viscosity of the sorbed water, calculated to be orders of magnitude larger than that of free water. The coefficients normally used to describe isothermal moisture transport in wood are derived from the model, and their predicted behavior as functions of the relative vapor pressure h of the cell wall are described graphically. An attempt is made to calculate a quantitative magnitude for the diffusion coefficient D, based on an assumed relationship between viscosity and the activation energy for water diffusion. 相似文献

Concentrations of IGF-I and IGF-II, and IGF binding proteins (IGFBP) in serum and mammary gland secretions were surveyed during the dry period and early lactation of 30 Holstein cows. Although there was a threefold drop in the concentration of IGF-I in serum from the last week of the dry period to parturition (81 +/- 7 to 24 +/- 3 ng/ml, P less than .01), there was no significant change in serum IGF-II concentration during this period (150 +/- 17 vs 173 +/- 13 ng/ml, P greater than .05). Furthermore, a 57% increase in serum IGF-I was observed from the last week of lactation to the second week of drying off (100 +/- 5 to 157 +/- 8 ng/ml, P less than .05). Changes in serum IGF-II were not observed (126 +/- 11 vs 150 +/- 10 ng/ml, respectively; P greater than .05). Although IGF-I, IGF-II, and IGFBP concentrations in mammary secretions peaked 2 wk before parturition (2.95 +/- 1.1, 1.83 +/- .6, and 7.27 +/- .76 micrograms/ml, respectively), total output/quarter was highest in colostrum (394 +/- 119, 295 +/- 132, and 2,680 +/- 1,967 micrograms/quarter, respectively). Weekly milking of two individual quarters during the dry period did not affect (P greater than .05) IGF-I or IGF-II concentration (ng/ml) or total output (microgram/quarter) and milk yield in colostrum and milk (2 wk and 7 wk) compared with the ipsilateral quarter. The data support the hypothesis that IGF-I may be transported by the mammary gland epithelium. This study investigated the replacement of tumbling (intermittent vacuum tumbling for 6 h) with pressure treatment (7 MPa for 4 s) in the production of a cured ham product with the aim of elucidating if the pressure treatment could reduce the amount of salt added to obtain a satisfactory product. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) revealed a pressure-induced loosening of the meat structure, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry revealed that this structural modification of the meat had an impact on water properties and water distribution in both cooked and cooked/fried products. Three salt levels (0.6, 1.1, and 1.7% w/w) were investigated, and sensory profiling revealed that the pressured-cooked meat obtained a significantly higher juiciness score at low and medium salt levels. In addition, sensory profiling assessments revealed that at the lowest salt concentration the pressured product was perceived to be saltier compared with the tumbled product; however, the difference was not significant and was absent upon frying. In contrast, in sensory time intensity analysis the maximum intensity and the total salt taste were significantly higher in the pressured samples at the low and medium salt levels in the cooked samples. In conclusion, the present study showed strong evidence that the structure and biophysical characteristics of cured ham is altered by pressurization and suggested that pressurization may reduce the critical amount of salt required in a ham product. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon fillets differing with regard to raw material characteristics (prerigor, postrigor, frozen/thawed) and salt content were investigated by FT-IR microspectroscopy and light microscopy. Local variation within each salmon fillet was further taken into account by sampling from the head and tail part separately as they vary in fat and moisture content. The highest salt uptake was achieved for frozen/thawed quality during brine-salting with 16% NaCl for 4 h, while the uptake was least for prerigor fish. At the same time, salting caused muscle fiber swelling of about 10% for both frozen/thawed and postrigor qualities. Differences in the FT-IR amide I spectral region were observed implying a change in the muscle protein secondary structure. Prerigor was least affected by brine-salting, having a final salt concentration of 2.2%, while postrigor had a NaCl content of 3.0% and frozen/thawed of 4.1%. Local variation within the fillets had an effect on the amide I absorption characteristics before as well as after salting. Salt uptake of the samples was affected by raw material quality and at the same time the degree of swelling of the myofibers was influenced by raw material character. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cases of hindlimb digital extensor weakness of unknown etiology have been observed in Norway since 1995. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the observed bilateral extensor weakness was attributable to neuropathy of the distal nerves and that this was related to environmental factors, possibly dietary. ANIMALS: Seventy-five horses with digital extensor weakness occurring from 1995 to 2004 are described. METHODS: Eleven horses were examined at The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, and the medical records of 64 horses seen in ambulatory practice were reviewed. RESULTS: There was no apparent sex, age, or breed predilection, but the majority were horses kept for pleasure or breeding purposes. Clinical signs varied from intermittent knuckling of the hindlimbs to paraplegia. Some horses showed no or only slow progression of signs, whereas others developed severe signs within hours. No other neurologic deficits were detected in any of the horses. Epidemiologic data and laboratory results were not supportive of an infectious etiology. The only common factor for all affected horses seemed to be feeding big bale silage or, occasionally, hay of poor microbiologic quality. Forty of the 75 horses were euthanized. Histopathologic examination of peripheral nervous tissue was performed in 22 horses, all of which had neuronal fiber degeneration. The majority of horses with mild signs recovered after 5-6 months of rest. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Clinical signs correlated with polyneuropathy involving sciatic nerves. 相似文献
