Genetic and environmental variances and covariances and associated genetic parameters were estimated for weaning weight, asymptotic mature weight, and repeated mature weights. Data consisted of a set of weight measurements of 3,044 Angus cows born between 1976 and 1990. Mature weight was predicted by individually fitting Brody growth curves (asymptotic weight) and by using weights repeatedly measured after 4 yr of age. Variance and covariance components for mature weight were estimated by REML from a single-trait animal model with asymptotic weight, a two-trait animal model with asymptotic and weaning weight, and a two-trait animal model with repeated weights and weaning weight. Weaning and cow contemporary groups were defined as fixed effects. Random effects for weaning weight included direct genetic, maternal genetic, and permanent environmental effects; and for mature weight, direct genetic and repeated measurements (if in the model). Heritability estimates for weaning weight were similar for both two-trait models (.53 and .59). Estimates of heritability for mature weight were .44, .52, and .53 for the single-trait model with asymptotic weight, two-trait model with asymptotic weight, and two-trait model with repeated measures weights, respectively. The estimate of the genetic correlation between mature and weaning weight was higher for the repeated measures model (.85 vs. .63). A lower heritability estimate for mature weight from the single-trait model was likely due to postweaning culling. Therefore, a genetic evaluation of mature weight from field data should include a trait recorded earlier in life that is less subjected to selective data reporting. 相似文献

Direct and maternal genetic and environmental variances and covariances were estimated for weaning weight and growth and maturing traits derived from the Brody growth curve. Data consisted of field records of weight measurements of 3,044 Angus cows and 29,943 weaning weight records of both sexes. Growth traits included weights and growth rates at 365 and 550 d, respectively. Maturing traits included the age of animals when they reached 65% of mature weight, relative growth rates, and degrees of maturity at 365 and 550 d. Variance and covariance components were estimated by REML from a set of two-trait animal models including weaning weight paired with a growth or maturing trait. Weaning and cow contemporary groups were defined as fixed effects. Random effects for weaning weight included direct genetic, maternal genetic, and permanent environmental effects. For growth and maturing traits, a random direct genetic effect was included in the model. Direct heritability estimates for growth traits ranged from .46 to .52 and for maturing traits from .31 to .34. Direct genetic correlations between weaning weight and weights and growth rates at 365 and 550 d ranged from .56 to .70. Correlations of maternal weaning genetic effects with direct genetic effects on weights at 365 and 550 d were positive, but those with growth rates were negative. Between weaning weight and degrees of maturity at both 365 and 550 d, direct genetic correlation estimates were .55 and maternal genetic correlations estimates were -.05, respectively. Direct genetic correlations of weaning weight with relative growth rates and age at 65% of mature weight ranged from .04 to .06, and maternal-direct genetic correlation estimates ranged from -.50 to -.56, respectively. These estimates indicate that higher genetic capacity for milk production was related to higher body mass and degrees of maturity between 365 and 550 d of age but was negatively related to absolute and relative growth rates in that life stage. 相似文献

Disease in a dairy herd associated with the introduction and spread of bovine virus diarrhoea virus 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In January 1982 an outbreak of diarrhoea among adult dairy cows in a closed herd of approximately 200 milking animals was shown to be caused by the introduction of bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV). Affected animals showed a significant reduction in milk yield. One animal died and four were culled. Eight cows aborted and one weak calf was born. Of 121 calves born that year, 26 died, mostly from pneumonia, but five aged from three weeks to five months had enteric lesions of mucosal disease. Subsequent investigations of the whole herd in 1983 and 1984 showed that virus spread among the adults was slow and that BVDV continued to make a major contribution to calf losses. Again the greatest cause of loss was suppurative or fibrinous pneumonia. Overall, BVDV was isolated from 36 animals. Isolation of virus from a wide range of tissues of individual animals confirmed that they were viraemic at death. Viruses from calves dying of pneumonia and from aborted fetuses were non-cytopathic in tissue culture. Isolates showing varying degrees of cytopathogenicity were obtained only from tissues of one calf with a congenital neurological defect and the seven animals with enteric lesions consistent with a diagnosis of mucosal disease. Blood from all 89 BVDV antibody-free animals older than three months was tested for the presence of BVDV. Altogether, 12 calves were identified as persistently viraemic and all were apparently healthy when bled. The Mark III very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) system allows recording and later processing of up to 112 megabits per second from each radio telescope of an interferometer array. For astrometric and geodetic measurements, signals from two radio-frequency bands (2.2 to 2.3 and 8.2 to 8.6 gigahertz) are sampled and recorded simultaneously at all antenna sites. From these dual-band recordings the relative group delays of signals arriving at each pair of sites can be corrected for the contributions due to the ionosphere. For many radio sources for which the signals are sufficiently intense, these group delays can be determined with uncertainties under 50 picoseconds. Relative positions of widely separated antennas and celestial coordinates of radio sources have been determined from such measurements with 1 standard deviation uncertainties of about 5 centimeters and 3 milliseconds of arc, respectively. Sample results are given for the lengths of baselines between three antennas in the United States and three in Europe as well as for the arc lengths between the positions of six extragalactic radio sources. There is no significant evidence of change in any of these quantities. For mapping the brightness distribution of such compact radio sources, signals of a given polarization, or of pairs of orthogonal polarizations, can be recorded in up to 28 contiguous bands each nearly 2 megahertz wide. The ability to record large bandwidths and to link together many large radio telescopes allows detection and study of compact sources with flux densities under 1 millijansky. 相似文献

The transformation of forests to agriculture is a dominant theme in human history, previously associated with progress, increasingly associated with local and global danger. A workshop at the Smithsonian Institution brought together scholars interested in one very large and fragile deltaic forest system of international importance: the Sundarbans. We found that land-hungry peasants are not quite the villain of the piece, as often portrayed; destruction and deterioration of the forest reflected pre-colonial dynamics of community and state formation, colonial land and forest policy, international economics, and failure to solve international commons dilemmas. Preservation of the remaining Sundarbans depends on profound shifts in values concerning nature as well as changes in political structure and national economic pressures. Conventional wisdom in the form of the “tragedy of the commons” in explaining environmental degradation stands in need of revision. 相似文献
